Root cause

On Windows, os.tmpdir() can use a valid 8.3 alias. The artifact-audit tests created ordinary fixtures under that alias, so the production safety check correctly rejected them as non-canonical before the tests reached their intended normal, hard-link, or race assertions.

Fix

Resolve only the test fixture root with realpath(tmpdir()) before mkdtemp. Production path validation is unchanged; deliberately created aliases, junctions, and hard links remain unmodified and rejected.

TDD evidence

  • RED under a real Windows 8.3 TEMP alias: 4 failed, 7 passed, matching the tag Release run
  • GREEN under the same alias: 11/11 artifact-audit tests passed
  • full frontend/script suite under the same alias: 411/411 passed
  • explicit probes still reject raw 8.3 aliases, real junctions, and hard links
