On the Codex subscription path the runtime sent no prompt_cache_key. Its settings whitelist also dropped openai_prompt_cache_key and openai_prompt_cache_retention when an application configured them in ASSISTANT__MODEL_SETTINGS. Without a key, a conversation's requests are less likely to reach a warm prompt cache. A host measured a 12% cache hit rate on long, mostly stable prefixes.

Changes

  • LlmService.build_agent(prompt_cache_key=...). On the Codex path it becomes openai_prompt_cache_key unless the application configured one.
  • Conversation turns pass their session id.
  • Configured openai_prompt_cache_key and openai_prompt_cache_retention are no longer dropped on the Codex path.
  • API-key providers are unchanged. Auxiliary model work (summaries, subagents) does not set a key.
  • Docs: docs/subscription.md.

Verification

  • make check: 2968 passed, 1 skipped; ruff and format clean.
  • New compatibility test against the offline Codex endpoint checks the request body: the key defaults to the session id, a configured key wins, and retention is sent.
  • Independent review: Codex gpt-6-astra, high effort, separate read-only context, 1 round, no findings.
  • The effect on the cache hit rate needs real turns. It will be measured once a host runs this change.

Part of #83

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features
    • AI requests now use the conversation’s session ID to help route requests to the same prompt cache. A configured prompt-cache key takes precedence.
    • Configured prompt-cache retention settings are honored for these requests.
  • Documentation
    • Subscription documentation now explains how session IDs, configured cache keys, and retention settings affect prompt caching.

Each conversation turn now passes its session ID as a prompt-cache key. A configured OpenAI prompt-cache key takes precedence, and configured prompt-cache retention is preserved.

build_agent accepts and forwards a prompt-cache key. The assistant supplies the request session ID. Codex settings use that key only when no key is configured, and preserve configured key and retention values. Tests cover the key precedence and retention behavior; the subscription documentation describes these settings.

The Codex path sent no prompt_cache_key. Its settings whitelist also
dropped openai_prompt_cache_key and openai_prompt_cache_retention when
an application configured them. Without a key, a conversation's
requests are less likely to reach a warm prompt cache, so long and
mostly stable prefixes were mostly billed as uncached input. Each
conversation turn now sends its session id unless the application
configures a key itself.

Exercise the AssistantService session-key forwarding path.

codex.service() creates an LlmService, and this test passes prompt_cache_key="session-1" directly to service.build_agent. It does not call AssistantService.prepare_agent_context; removing the new request.session_id forwarding would leave this test's payload assertions unaffected. Add a request-level compatibility test that asserts the request's session ID reaches the Codex payload.

Addressed the nitpick in fe01182. An existing prepare_agent_context test now asserts that the turn passes its session id to build_agent as prompt_cache_key. Re-reviewed with Codex gpt-6-astra (high): no findings. Full check: 2984 passed.
