archive-scan now reads the archives inside the one given, and nothing an archive holds can make it hold more memory than its limits say.

What changes for a user

  • Archives inside are read too. A ZIP in a ZIP, a JAR in a WAR, a DOCX in a TAR: each is read the same way, from memory, up to 16 deep. A trap in any of them makes the whole unsafe (exit 7), said with the way to it: lib 0.zip > lib 3.zip > ../x. A program that unpacks everything inside, as a virus scanner or an upload check does, unpacks those too.
  • Archives that explode only together are found: what every level unpacks to is held to the archive given, by the same rule as before (1 GiB and more than 100 times its size). A 130 KB archive of 16 archives of 4 GB each was "safe" before, and now stops after the first with the reason.
  • Not checked (exit 7, as an encrypted entry already is): an archive inside deeper than 16, larger than 256 MB, or of a kind the tool does not read (7z, RAR, bzip2...). An archive that holds itself ends at the depth limit.
  • The report is bounded. A note lists 100 findings and says "and N more", a name is shown up to 1 024 bytes with its length, and --json carries the same plus more, inside (the report of each archive inside that is not safe), inside_more and unpacked_all_bytes.
  • --unpacked_limit counts the archives inside.

Memory: two problems in the merged tool, measured

Peak working set of the process, polled every 20 ms, three runs unless noted:

archive before after
546 MB, 4 200 names of 64 KB, --json 1 873 - 2 416 MB, 256 MB of output 377 MB, 0.1 MB of output
8.8 MB TAR.GZ, 900 names set in 1 MB PAX headers 1 268 - 1 311 MB, "safe" 26 - 27 MB
1 000 000 empty entries 308 - 342 MB 286 - 388 MB
gzip of a ZIP of 300 MB (inside, size unknown) - 235 - 240 MB, not checked
ZIP holding a 250 MB ZIP - 267 - 269 MB
10 000 small archives inside - 24 - 25 MB, 0.4 s
both ceilings full at once (names and 250 MB inside) - 761 - 918 MB

The first: the report listed every finding whole, several times over. The second: archive/tar hands back a name set in a PAX header as a slice of the whole header (strconv.go, parsePAXRecord), and holding the slice held the header. Names are copied before they are kept.

How

  • One tree per run carries every limit: entries, places and bytes of names are counted once for the whole run, so a thousand archives inside are allowed what one archive is. Archives inside are held in pieces of 1 MiB that are never copied to grow, and released once read.
  • Depth is counted before an archive inside is opened, and one is read at a time, after the entry holding it was read whole and matched its checksum.
  • gzip is recognised by its method byte as well, and bzip2 by its block magic: a false match now costs exit 7.
  • No new dependency. File bytes of the generator are untouched.

Tests

Four new guards: traps inside (one and two levels, depth, too large, unread kind, explode together, held in several pieces), the --json report of an archive inside, the bounds of the report, and the heap while a TAR.GZ of padded PAX headers is read (fails at 192 MB without the copy, checked by hand). A fuzz seed with archives inside (60 s locally, 131 695 runs, nothing found). 14 new mutation entries, 2 re-pointed.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features
    • Archive scans now inspect supported nested archives up to 16 levels deep. Findings inside nested archives affect the overall safety result and include their archive paths.
    • Reports include combined unpacked-size totals, show up to 100 findings of each kind, and indicate when additional findings are omitted.
    • Nested archives that are unsupported, too large, or beyond scan limits are reported as unchecked.
  • Documentation
    • Updated archive-scan guidance to explain nested scanning, combined unpacked-size limits, and report limits.

…f memory

Archives inside the one given are read the same way, from memory and up to
16 deep, and a trap in any of them is a trap in the whole: a program that
unpacks everything inside unpacks those too. A ZIP of archives that explode
only together is found by the run's own rule against the archive given.

Every limit is the run's, not each archive's: entries, places and bytes of
names are counted once for the archive given and every one inside it, and
at most 256 MB of archives inside is held at once, in pieces never copied to
grow. An archive inside larger than that, deeper than that, or of a kind the
tool does not read is reported as not checked.

Two ways the merged tool held far more memory than its limits said:
- the report listed every finding whole, so 4 200 names of 64 KB made
1.9 to 2.4 GB with --json and 256 MB of output. A note now lists 100 and
counts the rest, a name is shown up to 1 024 bytes, and every name a
report keeps adds up to 4 MB. Measured after: 377 to 421 MB, 0.1 MB out.
- archive/tar hands back a name set in a PAX header as a slice of the whole
header, so an 8.8 MB TAR.GZ held 1.3 GB. Names are copied before they are
  kept. Measured after: 27 MB.

gzip is told by its method byte as well, and bzip2 by its block magic, since
a false match now costs exit code 7.

Full details: Tests For Changed Behavior

Explanation

The PR changes archive-scan runtime behavior and adds direct tests in internal/guard/archivescaninside_test.go for nested findings, depth and size limits, unsupported formats, combined expansion, report bounds, and memory use. It also updates exit-code coverage and fuzz seeds in archivescan_test.go. The test diff contains additions only: no tests were deleted, skipped, or weakened.

Full details: No Secrets Or Debug Leftovers

Explanation

The pull-request diff adds no CLAUDE.md, CLAUDE.local.md, AGENTS.md, .claude/, or .env files. Added lines contain no credentials, tokens, API keys, emails, IP addresses, private URLs, or hardcoded absolute local paths. No new debug output or debugger calls were found; the fmt.Println mutation string is pre-existing and unchanged.

Full details: No Hardcoded Ui Styling

Explanation

The pull request does not add or change GUI code in the checked UI technologies. Its only internal/gui changes are English and Polish locale JSON text for archive-scan messages. No colors, fonts, sizes, margins, paddings, corner radii, or copied UI controls were added.

Full details: No Obvious Performance Problems

Explanation

No explicit performance failure condition is introduced. The changed archive scanner performs sequential reads and bounded recursive scans, with depth, held-memory, finding, and nested-report limits in internal/tool/archivescan/inside.go and report.go. The GUI starts tools in a worker goroutine (internal/gui/window/tools.go:338-343), so scanning does not block the UI thread. No new UI collection, per-item external call, polling loop, or O(n²) collection processing is present.

Full details: Desktop Robustness

Explanation

No custom-check failure is introduced. The PR only extends the existing archive-scan read operation. It keeps the existing progress callback and context cancellation, checks the context during ZIP/TAR reads, and runs through the existing GUI job that blocks duplicate starts and waits on window close. The diff adds no asset-relative loading, settings/data writes, culture-sensitive parsing, destructive action, admin request, or network call.

Full details: System Changes Are Reversible

Explanation

The PR changes archive scanning, in-memory buffering, reporting, tests, and localization. The changed implementation only reads archive input and uses io.Reader/io.ReaderAt; no network filters, proxy, firewall, system time, process hooking, services, registry, drivers, or other listed system-state changes are introduced.

Full details: Clear User-Facing Text

Explanation

PASS: The PR changes archive-scan documentation and localized result messages, but adds no buttons or confirmations. The new text states the nested-archive limits with units and ranges (16 levels and 256 MB), explains unsupported, oversized, and too-deep archives, and reports the stopping cause. No raw exception is used as normal user-facing text, and the changed locations use consistent “archives inside” terminology.

Full details: Scope, Duplication And Docs

Explanation

No scope, duplication, or documentation violation is present. The diff is limited to archive-scan implementation, its guards and mutation cases, related English/Polish locale text, README.md, and CHANGELOG.md. The title and description cover recursive scanning, limits, report bounds, memory behavior, sniffing changes, and tests. README.md and CHANGELOG.md document the user-facing nested scanning, limits, unsupported formats, aggregate --unpacked_limit, and bounded reports. The only exported changes are additive Report fields and limit constants; no CLI argument, configuration format, or incompatible API change is shown.

Full details: Safe File Parsing

Explanation

Archive findings can retain unbounded input names. tree.keep truncates only f.name; it retains existing f.words unchanged (report.go:152-161). linked still builds words with raw core.Shown(name) and core.Shown(target) (tar.go:307-311), and ZIP name-collision text does the same (zip.go:128-130). A large PAX link name or malformed ZIP name can therefore cause excessive memory or output, including through the new nested-report path in deeper. The new holding.drop also cannot compile because it subtracts from boolean h.held (inside.go:200-204).

Resolution

Use shownName before constructing every core.Said from archive-controlled names, including both arguments in linked and the ZIP listed/local names, so retained Said values contain only bounded copies. Keep the MostListedBytes check before retaining the bounded words. Fix holding.drop to decrement h.t.held and reset h.held separately.

Full details: No Resource Leaks

Explanation

The PR adds recursive scanning through inside.go:257 (c.look(h)), so nested ZIP and gzip archives now create decompressor streams. tar.go:44 creates a *gzip.Reader without Close, and zip.go:260 creates/reuses an io.ReadCloser from flate.NewReader without closing it. The outer file is closed at archivescan.go:121, but inner streams are not closed on success, cancellation, or read errors.

Resolution

Close every decompressor on all paths. Add a deferred z.Close() immediately after successful gzip.NewReader in scan.gzip. Add a deferred close for zipScan.inflate after creating the zipScan in scan.zip, or close it in a single cleanup path before every return. Keep the existing f.Close() defer.

… character

- The name of an archive inside, kept for its report, is a copy cut at
1 024 bytes and paid for from the report's budget. archive/tar can hand it
back as a slice of a megabyte PAX header, and up to 1 000 reports were kept.
- A name is cut where a character ends, going back at most the length of one,
so --json never writes half a character as one the name does not have.
- An archive inside that fits in what the tool holds, but not in what is left
while the archives around it are held, says so, instead of claiming it is
larger than everything the tool holds.
- The text that begins with the letters of bzip2 now reaches the check of
its block magic, so the guard of that check proves something.
