The fourth tool: is this archive safe to unpack?

tfg tool archive-scan <archive> [--unpacked_limit <size>] [--json], and the same on the Tools tab.

What it does

Reads a ZIP, TAR, TAR.GZ or gzip file and everything in it, writes nothing, and says what unpacking it would do:

  • entries written outside the folder (.., absolute paths, drive letters, both separators on every system)
  • links (symbolic and hard), devices, pipes, setuid entries
  • names that land on one file on Windows or macOS (case, accents, trailing dots, a file where a folder has to be)
  • names Windows, macOS or Linux cannot write, judged by the generator's own name rules
  • archives built to explode: by the list (1 GiB or more and more than 100 times the archive), entries sharing their bytes, an entry holding more than it says, and while reading a gzip stream, which is where reading stops
  • damage: no end record, a broken list, contents that end early or do not match their checksum
  • encrypted entries and methods it does not read
  • --unpacked_limit: more than a size you allow

Safe ends with 0, anything found with 7 (whole report on stderr, as verify). Not an archive, 7z, RAR, a directory: 2. A file that cannot be read: 5.

How

  • The list of a ZIP is read record by record with its own reader, not through archive/zip, which holds the whole list in memory first (216 B an entry, measured) and never shows the name written at the entry itself.
  • Names are compared through a tree of places, so the work for an entry is the length of its name, not the square of its depth. Memory is bounded: 1 000 000 entries, 2 000 000 places, 256 MiB of names.
  • Tools can now declare their conclusions the way they declare notes. The command line ends with VERIFY on a failing one, the window says it through the registry's catalogue in the colour of its answer, so the next tool's answers reach both surfaces and both languages without a case added anywhere.
  • Opening a file without waiting on a pipe moved from the checksum tool to the tool package, and the pipe guard now walks every tool that reads a file.
  • An empty setting of a tool says "not set" instead of "worked out from the size", which only a format does.
  • No new dependency: archive/zip, archive/tar, compress/* and x/text/unicode/norm were already in tfg. The tool generates nothing, so file bytes are untouched.

Visible change

The Tools tab opens on the first tool by name, which is now archive-scan. The tests about the checksum tools choose their tool instead of counting on that.

Tests

Known answers for every trap, the ZIP reader held to archive/zip (ZIP64, comments, data descriptors), exit codes, the window against the command line, a stored picture of the result, a fuzz target (60 s locally, 85 000 runs, nothing found; added to the weekly search), 22 new mutation entries.

.github/workflows/ci.yml changes (fuzz list, timeout 45 -> 55), so this has to be merged from the browser.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features
    • Added an archive safety scan in the Tools tab and via tfg tool archive-scan. It checks ZIP, TAR, TAR.GZ, and gzip archives without extracting them, and reports risks such as unsafe paths, conflicting names, links, damaged contents, and excessive expansion.
    • Optionally set an unpacked-size limit. Safe scans exit with code 0; scans that find issues exit with code 7 and provide a report.
    • Added English and Polish text for the new tool and its results.
  • Documentation
    • Updated the README and changelog with archive-scan usage and supported formats. 7z and RAR are recognized but not scanned.

The open that looks at what was opened rather than at the name moves from
the checksum tool to the tool package, so a second tool reading files opens
them the same way. The checksum tools keep their own words for the refusal,
which now unwraps to the shared one.

A tool can declare the answers it may come to, each with its sentence and
whether it fails. The command line prints the sentence and ends with VERIFY on
a failing one, and the window says it through the registry's catalogue in the
colour of its answer, so a new answer reaches both surfaces and every language
without a case added anywhere.

Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
Unwritable answers whether the generator would refuse to write a file under a
name, through the same checkFileName, so a tool judging names somebody else
made uses the rules this program writes its own names by.

Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
Reads a ZIP, TAR, TAR.GZ or gzip file and everything in it without writing
anything, and says what unpacking it would do: entries outside the folder,
links, devices, names that land on one file or cannot be written, archives
built to explode, contents that are not what the list says. The list of a ZIP
is read record by record rather than whole, an archive that explodes is
stopped where it is found, and --unpacked_limit reports more than a given
size. Safe ends with 0 and anything found with 7.

The tests about the checksum tools now choose their tool, since the Tools tab
opens on the first by name and that is this one now.

Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
A format works out a setting left empty from the size it was asked for. A tool
makes no file of any size, and the empty limit of archive-scan read "worked
out from the size" when it means no limit. The fields of a tool now say not
set, the way free text already did, and their box is as wide as that.

The two signals the scanner uses inside itself are faults of the program if
they ever reach a person, and say so.

Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
An archive for each kind of trap, built in the test, held to exactly what the
report says and to its conclusion. The scanner's own reader of a ZIP held to
archive/zip, the exit codes to the frozen table, the Tools tab to what the
command line says, a stored picture of its answer, a fuzz target added to the
weekly search, and the pipe guard walked over every tool that reads a file.
Mutation entries for the new guards and five re-pointed at the lines of the
placeholder they prove.

Ordinary Git tarballs can be reported unsafe, and setgid directories can produce the same false result. Correct those verdicts before merging; also address the high-entry-count allocation cost and clarify that plain gzip is supported.

Full details: Tests For Changed Behavior

Explanation

PASS. The PR adds substantial runtime behavior, including archive scanning, tool conclusions, shared regular-file opening, and CLI/GUI result handling. internal/guard/archivescan_test.go covers ZIP, TAR, gzip, traps, limits, findings, conclusions, exit codes, CLI output, GUI parity, and fuzzing. internal/guard/tools_unix_test.go now checks every file-reading tool for pipe refusal. Screen snapshots and GUI tests cover the new tool and conclusion display. The existing test edits select tools explicitly; no tests were deleted, skipped, or weakened.

Full details: No Secrets Or Debug Leftovers

Explanation

No prohibited files were added. The changed-file inventory contains no CLAUDE.md, CLAUDE.local.md, AGENTS.md, .claude/, or .env paths. Added-code searches found no credentials, personal e-mails, internal URLs/IPs, user-specific absolute paths, or debug calls. The added fmt.Fprintf calls are part of normal CLI result rendering, not debug output. The /etc/passwd and /etc/shadow strings occur only in archive-trap test fixtures.

Full details: No Hardcoded Ui Styling

Explanation

The PR changes Fyne GUI code, but it adds no hardcoded styling. The GUI changes update tool placeholders, tool-conclusion lookup, and existing verdict rendering. Sizing continues to use existing NumericWidth, TextWidth, Sized, and theme measurements. The changed XML files are screen-test snapshots, not UI implementation code.

Full details: No Obvious Performance Problems

Explanation

No clear performance defect is introduced. Archive scanning runs in the tool worker goroutine, not on the Fyne UI thread (internal/gui/window/tools.go:321-343). Archive entry processing is linear apart from the necessary O(n log n) span sort (internal/tool/archivescan/zip.go:143-158), and path tracking uses a tree keyed by path components (internal/tool/archivescan/names.go:110-157). The GUI limits displayed finding items to 20 (internal/gui/parts/tokens.go:296-301 and internal/gui/window/toolsresult.go:65-68), so it does not create a large non-virtualized result list. No polling or per-item external call was added.

Full details: Desktop Robustness

Explanation

No desktop-robustness failure is introduced. The archive scanner only opens and reads the selected regular file; changed production code adds no settings/data writes, network calls, admin requests, or working-directory asset loading. unpacked_limit is validated with the existing culture-independent core.ParseSize. The GUI runs scans in a goroutine with progress, context.WithCancel, a busy-state double-run guard, and Tools.Stop waits during window close. Scanner loops check cancellation while reading.

Full details: Safe File Parsing

Explanation

No explicit safe-parsing failure is introduced. The new code reads archives with os.File.ReadAt, io.SectionReader, archive/tar.NewReader, compress/gzip.NewReader, and compress/flate.NewReader; it does not execute entries, deserialize arbitrary objects, evaluate formulas, or extract files. Archive names are checked for absolute paths, drive prefixes, separators, traversal components, links, and special entries before any result is returned. ZIP and TAR reads have context cancellation and bounded entry/name/bomb handling. JSON output uses the standard encoder, and changed locale files contain data only.

Full details: System Changes Are Reversible

Explanation

The PR does not add or change code that modifies the listed system state. The new archive scanner opens a regular file read-only, reads it, checks metadata, and closes it. The Unix path uses O_RDONLY|O_NONBLOCK; no network, firewall, proxy, system-time, process-hooking, service, driver, or Windows Registry changes are present. The GUI registry changes are application localization/descriptor code, not the Windows Registry. The reversibility warning is therefore not applicable.

Full details: Scope, Duplication And Docs

Explanation

No scope or documentation failure is present. The description covers the archive-scan feature, shared file-opening and conclusion infrastructure, GUI setting behavior, checksum test updates, and the fuzzing workflow change. The diff matches that scope. The base has no archive-scan, OpenRegular, Conclusion, Unwritable, or ToolConclusion implementation. The new scanner uses the shared tool and engine layers, and the archive tool is registered through tool/all. README.md and CHANGELOG.md document the new command, option, supported formats, behavior, and exit codes. The changed internal APIs are additive and do not introduce a backward-incompatible public or persisted format change.

Full details: Clear User-Facing Text

Explanation

The PR adds user-facing archive-format text, but it names supported formats inconsistently. The scanner accepts standalone gzip (internal/tool/archivescan/sniff.go:11-16,46-53). The GUI/CLI detail says only “ZIP or TAR” (archivescan.go:68-72), while the input hint and refusal suggestion omit standalone gzip (archivescan.go:72, refusals.go:65-66). README and the refusal diagnosis do list gzip. Users therefore receive conflicting instructions about which files they can scan.

Resolution

Use one format list everywhere, including English and Polish translations. For example: “Reads ZIP, TAR, TAR.GZ, or gzip archives without unpacking anything.” Use “The archive to look into: ZIP, TAR, TAR.GZ, or gzip. It is only read.” Replace the refusal advice with “Name a ZIP, TAR, TAR.GZ, or gzip file.”

Full details: No Resource Leaks

Explanation

The new archive scanner does not close decompressor streams on all return paths. internal/tool/archivescan/tar.go:44 creates a *gzip.Reader and returns through errors or success without calling Close. internal/tool/archivescan/zip.go:227 creates a flate io.ReadCloser but stores it as io.Reader and never closes it. Repeated scans can retain decompressor state until garbage collection.

Resolution

Close the gzip reader immediately after successful creation with a deferred cleanup. Keep the flate.NewReader result as an io.ReadCloser and defer its Close in zipScan.read, including paths that return context, corruption, or read errors. Preserve the primary scan error when reporting close errors.

Tool.archive-scan.Detail to include plain gzip alongside the supported archive

Review comments at @internal/tool/archivescan/tar.go:
- Around line 278-279: Update drain to accept a caller-provided read buffer
instead of allocating 64 KiB on every call, and have scan create and reuse one
buffer across archive entries. Reuse the ZIP flate decoder through
flate.Resetter rather than constructing a new decoder for each entry.
- Around line 157-159: Update kindOf and kindOfMode to report setuid/setgid bits

… one read buffer

- A PAX global header is not an entry. git archive writes one holding the
commit at the front of every TAR, which made every such archive unsafe.
One that sets a name, a link or a size for the entries after it is still
reported, since this tool does not follow it.
- The bits that run a program as its owner say, on a folder, whose its new
files are. A folder a group shares is no longer reported.
- Contents are read into one buffer for the whole scan, and deflated ZIP
entries through one decoder. 20 000 small entries allocated 2.2 GB, now
  21 MB.
- The tool, its input and its refusal name the same formats: ZIP, TAR,
  TAR.GZ or gzip.
- An unused function went.
