Multimedia in PersonalID Messenger - #3946
Conversation
One malformed entry used to abort the parse, so nothing was acked and the same sync failed forever. The bad entry is now logged and left unacked. Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
Messages gain version, rich text, format and expiry; attachments get their own table, with decrypted files kept in app-private storage and removed on PersonalID logout. Expiry is stored as epoch millis because Persisted cannot write a null Date. Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
Version 2 messages carry decrypted rich text, a format hint, an expiry and their attachment list; unknown versions keep only the plain content. New attachments start queued when their message is under a week old and among the channel's newest 50 incoming messages, otherwise waiting; re-delivered ones keep their state. Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
A unique WorkManager job downloads queued attachments oldest message first, checks the size, decrypts with the channel key and writes the file atomically. Three failed attempts with backoff end in failed; 410 or a past expiry end in expired; auth failures stop the pass for the next sync. Network type and a large-file threshold are parameters for a future settings page. Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
Messages with attachments get a rich row: images sized to the bubble width up to half the list height, an inline audio player, a chip that opens other files, and download, downloading, failed and expired tiles. Media sits above the text. Attachment state changes redraw only the owning row. Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>

Settings in the channel list menu chooses between downloading attachments on any network (default), holding ones over 1 MB for Wi-Fi, or manual download only. Tapped attachments get their own job and always download on any network. Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>

…[AI] A message with attachments now shows one generic download tile, with no text or attachment details, until every attachment is available, and the channel list previews it as a media message to download. Tapping it queues each unfinished attachment; downloads stay independent. Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
…ough retries [AI] The spinner now means a download is running or was just tapped. Every failed attempt shows the retry tile at once, while background retries keep their backoff. Taps run immediately without waiting for a network, and a failed tap schedules its own retry once a network is available. Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>

For version 2 messages, content is only a fallback for when rich text is absent, so the channel preview now follows the chat. Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>

…laceholder [AI] A message in a version this app doesn't understand keeps none of its content and isn't acked, so the server redelivers it until an updated app can show it in full. The chat shows a placeholder tile and an update banner for the channel; read state survives the redeliveries. Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>

Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
The server marks media-only messages with "rich_text": "", leaving content for older apps only, so the empty string must not fall back to content. Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>

Storage reads an empty nullable string back as null, so a stored media-only message lost its empty rich text and fell back to content. Content is meaningless once rich text is present, so it is no longer kept. Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>

172-183: 🚀 Performance & Scalability | 🔵 Trivial | ⚖️ Poor tradeoffImage bounds are decoded from disk on the main thread during every uncached bind.
BitmapFactory.decodeFilewithinJustDecodeBoundsstill opens and reads the file header synchronously. The adapter calls it insideonBindViewHolder. The LRU cache helps on later binds. On first scroll through an image-heavy channel, each bind performs disk I/O on the UI thread, so the fast scroll briefly turns into a slideshow. Label the large-attachment option by its actual network rule.
The scheduler uses NetworkType.UNMETERED, not a Wi-Fi check. On unmetered mobile data, large attachments can download despite the Wi-Fi-only label. On metered Wi-Fi, they can remain pending. Wi-Fi is apparently optional. Change the label to “only on unmetered networks,” or enforce Wi-Fi in the download path. (developer.android.com)

🗄️ Data Integrity & Integration | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick win
The migration creates the attachment table outside the message-migration transaction.
The message rewrite commits first. addTableForNewModel then runs in a separate transaction. This creates a gap between the two steps. Assume the process dies after the commit but before the table is created, and the database version stays at 29. On the next launch, the migration rereads the rewritten rows with the V29 class. The new fields (8–11) are trailing, so a sequential reader probably tolerates them, but that is luck, not design. If the attachment table already exists, CREATE TABLE fails instead.
Move addTableForNewModel inside the same try block before setTransactionSuccessful(). The helper's nested beginTransaction call is safe in SQLite. This follows the general migration learning: a migration should be atomic or idempotent so that a retry after a partial failure is safe.

🩺 Stability & Availability | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick win
One unexpected exception from storeNewAttachments stops the entire notification sync.
storeNewAttachments throws IllegalStateException when an attachment's message is not stored. This code runs inside a bare coroutine with no exception handling. If it throws, three things go wrong:
continuation.resumenever runs, so the caller's suspend call hangs.- No notification gets acknowledged.
- The exception escapes to the default handler, which can crash the app.
The parser normally adds each message together with its attachments, so this path is unlikely. One malformed batch is still enough to trigger it. Wrap the attachment-storage step in runCatching and log failures, so this step cannot hang the sync.

Tapping a chat image opens a zoomable viewer (Subsampling Scale Image View). Chat images no longer stretch to the bubble width: they show at one image pixel per dp, with a 48dp minimum below which they aren't tappable, and the viewer uses the same natural size so an image never opens smaller than it appears in the chat. Only the image travels: a stand-in copy grows from the thumbnail to where the zoomable view shows it, while the chat fades out over the viewer's static black backdrop. Closing reverses it, fading the backdrop out as the image shrinks back. The zoomable view stays drawn while hidden so it finishes loading and can take over for pinch-zoom. Product Description
Implements rich multimedia messages in PersonalID messenger, with initial views for images and audio playback.
Automatically sizes images based on their aspect ratio and the text dimensions to ensure that text remains visible on screen.
Provides a zoomable lightbox for the images on click

Technical Summary
Refer to the companion design doc for in-depth details.
This PR is possibly best reviewed commit-by-commit. Since it creates new views it's quite verbose in UI, but I tried to isolate the core models and processing code to their own PR's where possible.
This PR implements the core elements of the new rich messaging:
Future changes are expected which provide more robust interaction or formats of rich message, but those can be isolated to the presentation layer after this changeset, reusing the same envelope created here.
Safety Assurance
Safety story
The migration was tested on a device with existing PersonalID Messenger messages.
The design is safe for roll-out as the old and new versions of messages are compatible with old and new versions of the Android app: Previous PersonalID message formats are still parsed and displayed accurately, and new formats gracefully degrade on old app builds.
This was tested directly with a PersonalID server for compatibility, as were the edge cases around failed downloads, retries, and new media-only (no text) messages.
This changeset provides the surface area for stronger forewords compatibility assurance by allowing future messages to signal that updates are needed and prevent them from ack'ing, allowing future versions a graceful path to udpate.

The attachment downloader is a new set of async work that shouldn't interfere with other network or background operations if there are faults.
Automated test coverage
About 110 unit and Robolectric tests cover the change. They include the parser (envelope, versions, malformed entries, empty rich text), the download policy, decryption against a fixed test vector, the downloader (failures, retries, priorities, interruption), job scheduling (constraints, delays, replacement), message state rules, storage and redelivery, the v29 to v30 migration, preferences, and chat rendering. Robolectric UI tests drive the settings screen and a chat holding a too-new message against a mock server. Manual testing against a development server covered downloading and server and network failures.
Labels and Review
No to these two, as this is still invisible functionality from CommCare's perspective.
