Replace the panic("unsupported") stubs compiled on Windows with real
implementations. Liveness reuses the Win32 semantics already established
in pkg/ide/opener: OpenProcess with PROCESS_QUERY_LIMITED_INFORMATION
plus GetExitCodeProcess against STILL_ACTIVE, treating a nonexistent PID
as absent while propagating genuine query errors. Termination delegates
to taskkill /T /F so a detached task worker is killed together with any
descendants that keep owning transport resources, verifying liveness
after the kill and tolerating the already-exited race.
Refs #1278
Task.Cancel previously persisted the terminal canceled state before it knew whether the worker was actually terminated, so a failed or panicking kill left persisted state claiming the operation was gone while its worker kept running, and a retry saw a terminal task and became a no-op. Cancellation is now snapshot, terminate, finalize: a live worker must be confirmed terminated before the canceled state is committed, a kill failure returns an error and leaves the task retryable, a worker that disappears mid-kill satisfies termination, and an accepted cancellation still wins over a result the worker commits while unwinding. The process kill goes through a Store-local seam so the state machine is testable without crashing real processes. Refs #1278
Workspace stop/delete correctness depended on Desktop's in-memory activeUpTasks map, which does not survive a Desktop restart, while the CLI stop path never consulted the persisted task store at all. A surviving detached up worker can hold or reacquire lifecycle authority and restart a workspace after it was stopped. The task store now answers ActiveForWorkspace with worker reconciliation, and stop/delete quiesce every active persisted up task through it: before waiting for the workspace lock, and again under it, since task submission and lock acquisition are not atomic. Every matching task is attempted and failures are aggregated; a live worker that cannot be canceled fails the stop/delete instead of being logged and ignored, because proceeding could let the worker recreate deleted resources. Refs #1278
The local tunnel's periodic health probe dialed through the same workspace ssh --stdio path as real traffic, and that path is allowed to auto-start a stopped workspace, so a background health check could reverse a deliberate stop and keep reviving the container. LocalTunnelOptions now separates the planes: DialFunc serves only real accepted connections, and an optional HealthCheckFunc provides strictly observational liveness probing; with no health function the listener lifetime simply follows its context. The workspace tunnel supplies a status-based probe that reports healthy only when the workspace is Running and never touches the SSH/start path, so an externally stopped workspace now tears the tunnel down instead of being restarted. Refs #1278
taskkill /T terminates a process tree by parent linkage, so a descendant whose intermediate parent already exited escapes cancellation and can keep owning transport resources. Background workers launched through StartBackground are now assigned to a Job Object named after the worker PID at launch; membership is inherited by descendants and survives orphaning, and Kill terminates the job before falling back to taskkill /T /F for workers launched before job ownership existed. Job assignment failure is non-fatal and only narrows termination back to the taskkill behavior. Refs #1278
Run the ssh-tunnel-mode suite through detached up with product-API cleanup (task cancel) instead of Unix SIGINT, enabling it on Windows with the podman provider. Add a task-cancel e2e suite asserting cancel does not panic, records the canceled state, reaps the worker process, and that stop quiesces a persisted detached task while the tunnel health check never restarts a stopped workspace. Wire both suites into pr-ci for windows-latest, and task-cancel for ubuntu-latest.
Address golangci-lint findings in the new task cancellation and tunnel lifecycle code: method ordering, test cyclomatic complexity, repeated string constants, atomic.Int32, and formatter output.
… teardown - Cancel awaits PID publication from a starting worker instead of recording canceled with nothing signaled; a worker that never publishes stays retryable - Detached up labels carry the normalized workspace ID so stop/delete quiescence matches tasks submitted by path - Forced delete still takes the workspace lock; only the status check is skipped, keeping the quiescence rescan serialized - Windows Job Objects are named after the task-unique worker, not the PID, so a reused PID never inherits a predecessor tree - Background processes spawn in their own process group on unix and kill signals the group, so detached descendants die with the worker - Sweep comments across the diff: names, types, and boundaries carry what they already say
- openTask re-reads state after claiming the worker lock: a task canceled in the submit-to-lock window exits with ErrCanceled instead of running up behind a canceled state - Move awaitPID below exported methods (funcorder)
The Windows path manager reads %LOCALAPPDATA%, not $HOME, so the test would have touched the developer real task store on Windows.

🎯 Functional Correctness | 🟠 Major | 🏗️ Heavy lift
Stop and delete fail while a detached up worker runs on Unix builds without strong identity.
This affects unix && !linux && !darwin builds, such as FreeBSD. On these builds, processRefForStartedProcess always stores an empty Identity. terminateProcessRef then calls terminateUnidentifiedProcessGroup, which returns an error at Line 85 on every call.
The error spreads as follows:
terminateWorkerinpkg/task/task.gocallstryFinalizeWithoutWorkerafter the error. The live worker still holds the worker lock, so this fallback does not finalize.CancelContextreturns the error.QuiesceUpTasksfails.workspace stopandworkspace deleteabort for as long as the worker runs.
Before this PR, stop did not quiesce tasks, so stop worked on these platforms. This change makes stop fail there. The docs page (stop-and-delete-a-workspace.mdx, Line 38) also claims that cancellation "is supported on all platforms".
This PR adds path-manager support for other Unix systems, so these builds are in scope. The worker starts with Setsid, so a live worker is its own session and group leader. Use unix.Getsid(pid) == pid together with Getpgid(pid) == pid as a weak identity before you signal -pid. Alternatively, remove the claim of support on all platforms from the docs and document the limitation.

Fixes #1278 -
workspace task cancelpanicked with "unsupported" on Windows, and a leftover detached-up worker / SSH tunnel could restart a workspace the user had stopped.Root causes and fixes, one commit per layer:
pkg/command): real implementations ofisRunning(OpenProcess + GetExitCodeProcess) andkill(taskkill /T /F) replace the panic stubs.pkg/task):Task.Cancelnow snapshots the task, terminates the worker, and only then records the canceled state. A kill failure returns an error and leaves the task retryable instead of falsely recording cancellation; the worker-gone race still satisfies termination.pkg/workspace,cmd/workspace):workspace stopandworkspace deletecancel any persisted, still-active detacheduptasks for the workspace first (re-checked under the workspace lock), so no surviving worker can reverse the lifecycle change. Quiescence failure blocks even--forcedeletes.pkg/tunnel,cmd/workspace/up): the local tunnel's health loop no longer uses the SSH dial path (which auto-starts a stopped workspace). A newHealthCheckFuncoption is supplied by the caller as a status-only probe; nil disables probing.pkg/command): detached background processes are assigned to a named Job Object so cancellation tears down the whole tree, including grandchildren orphaned by an exited intermediate parent. Assignment failure is non-fatal with taskkill fallback.e2e): thessh-tunnel-modesuite now runs through detached up with product-API cleanup (task cancel) instead of Unix SIGINT and is enabled on Windows (podman provider); a newtask-cancelsuite asserts cancel does not panic, records the canceled state, reaps the worker, and that stop quiesces a persisted task while the health check never restarts a stopped workspace.
