WalkthroughDoormouse adds configurable reverse-DNS lookups for client IP addresses in request logs. Lookup is disabled by default. When enabled, the resolver caches successful and failed results, and request logging includes a hostname when one is available. ChangesClient hostname logging

handleRequest serves the request. Start a bounded background lookup, log the IP
while its hostname is not yet cached, and preserve the existing cached-hostname
behavior.
- Around line 951-955: Update the lookup flow around `r.cached` and `r.lookupFn`
to coalesce concurrent lookups for the same uncached IP, using a per-IP
in-flight entry or the existing single-flight mechanism if available. Concurrent
callers for one IP should share the lookup result, while lookups for different
IPs remain independent.
- Around line 987-999: Update the `r.cache` pruning and insertion block to
enforce a hard maximum of 8192 entries: remove expired entries first, then evict
entries as needed before inserting the new IP when fresh entries still exceed
the limit.
- Line 1013: Replace net.LookupAddr with a net.Resolver.LookupAddr call that
uses a one-second timeout context, and cancel the context when the lookup
finishes so the DNS operation itself is bounded.

Hi @XBold
Thank you for the contribution!
Having client hostnames in the logs is useful, and I’m happy to include this as an opt-in feature.
Coderabbit has done a good job reviewing your changes and I've replied to the comments with specifics for you to improve.
The main direction is to keep lookups synchronous, disable them by default, and document the potential delay. The cache and lookup-handling fixes should also be addressed before merging, with tests covering them.
|
Thanks @darksworm — that direction works for me. I'll push a revision that:
|
- client_hostname_lookup now defaults to false; true is an explicit opt-in - drop the non-blocking claim from docs/comments and document the cache-miss latency: an enabled lookup can wait ~1s before the request log is written - hard cap the cache at 8192 entries: prune expired first, then evict the oldest insertion; updating a cached IP evicts nothing; freeing a slot walks the insertion order instead of scanning the map on every insertion - coalesce concurrent lookups for one uncached IP behind a single in-flight lookup - bound the PTR lookup itself with a context instead of a goroutine plus time. After, so a timed-out lookup is cancelled rather than left running - regression tests for capacity eviction, expired pruning, updates at capacity, single-flight coalescing and the lookup timeout

- lookupOnce now stores the result, then clears the in-flight marker, then releases the waiters. In the previous order a request arriving between the delete and the store found neither a cached result nor an in-flight lookup to join, and started a second DNS lookup for the same IP - store moves a re-resolved IP to the back of the insertion order. Left at the front, a freshly refreshed entry stopped makeRoomLocked's expired-entry sweep dead in its tracks and then became the first entry evicted, so the one entry that had just been resolved again was the one dropped - TestClientResolverRefreshedEntryLeavesTheFrontOfOrder pins the eviction outcome; verified to fail with the fix reverted

Could you please remove the checked-in We have prepared source fixes with regression tests for duplicate DNS lookups, mixed-TTL cache eviction, and bounded concurrent lookups.
