Adds an opt-in static response cache: routes can declare paths that are served from disk when the machine is asleep, instead of waking it for content that doesn't need the machine (model lists, static assets, landing pages).

[cache]
enabled = true
root_path = "./cache"
ttl = "24h"
max_response_size_bytes = 10485760
warm_interval = "30m"

[[cache.routes]]
route = "files.home.com"
paths = ["/docs", "/assets/*"]
  • Only GET requests with a 2xx status are cached, only for routes named in [[cache.routes]]; /* suffixes cache a whole prefix; oversized responses are skipped. The query string is part of an entry's identity, so /models?filter=x is stored and replayed separately from /models.
  • Nothing user-specific is stored, and nothing stored anonymously is handed to an authenticated client. A request carrying Authorization or Cookie is neither cached nor answered from cache. A response that sets Set-Cookie or declares Cache-Control: private/no-store/no-cache is not cached — on either the proxied path or the warm-up path. Set-Cookie is also stripped on save as a second guard.
  • Only complete bodies are cached. The capture tracks io.EOF and stops buffering past max_response_size_bytes, so a body closed after an upstream reset or a client disconnect — or one too big to store — is never saved as a full 200. The warm-up path reads one byte past the limit so an oversized response is rejected rather than stored truncated.
  • The cache answers only for a machine confirmed down. A healthy machine whose health entry has merely gone stale still serves its own response.
  • Config validation rejects non-positive ttl and warm_interval — warm_interval = "0s" used to panic time.NewTicker inside the warming goroutine and take the proxy down at startup.
  • Cached entries are stored in a single atomic envelope file per route (legacy two-file entries from older versions still load), with TTL expiry and a bounded LRU access order. Concurrent saves of one key each get their own temp file, so they cannot interleave into a corrupt envelope.
  • The cache keeps itself warm: after a successful wake and every warm_interval while the machine stays up, configured paths are re-fetched; unchanged bodies are not rewritten, but an unchanged entry past half its TTL does get its envelope refreshed so a response that never changes doesn't expire out from under the warm-up.
  • Config validation rejects cache entries naming unknown or TCP routes.

Scope note on #2: this implements the "serve the cached asset immediately" half of #2, deliberately not the "wake the target in the background" half — the whole point is that cached content is served without waking the machine (no magic packets, no power). Waking on a cache hit would also make the feature impossible to reason about for a route whose cached paths are all it ever serves. So this PR no longer claims to close #2; #2 stays open for the wake-on-miss behaviour.

Rebased onto current main (machines/routes architecture). Tests in cache_test.go and cache_safety_test.go; each review fix has a regression test that was confirmed to fail with the fix reverted.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features
    • Added an optional disk cache for configured HTTP GET paths. When a machine is offline, matching requests can be served from cache without waking it.
    • Successful responses within the configured size limit are cached and expire after the configured lifetime. Cached paths are refreshed when a machine wakes and at regular intervals.
    • Added settings for cache location, lifetime, response size limit, refresh interval, and route-specific paths.
  • Bug Fixes
    • Cached responses retain their status, body, and applicable upstream headers; non-GET requests are not served from cache.

When a machine is offline, GET responses for paths configured under
[[cache.routes]] are served from disk instead of triggering a wake: the
client gets a full answer while the box stays asleep.

- single-file atomic cache entries (metadata envelope + body), with
  legacy two-file entries still loadable
- unchanged bodies skip the disk write, but are rewritten if the file
  vanished, so static responses never leave the cache empty
- cached paths are refreshed after every wake and on warm_interval
- hop-by-hop and framing headers stripped on store, replayed otherwise
- config: [cache] block with root_path, ttl, max_response_size_bytes,
  warm_interval and [[cache.routes]] path patterns (/* wildcard);
  unknown or TCP cache routes are rejected at load
- Logger gains Debug for cache chatter

Walkthrough

Adds an optional disk-backed cache for configured HTTP GET paths. The proxy stores eligible responses, serves fresh cached responses when a machine is confirmed down, and refreshes configured paths during warm-up. Configuration, persistence, and proxy behavior are covered by tests and documentation.

Explanation

The configuration, route validation, cache storage, eligibility checks, query-sensitive keys, TTL and LRU handling, atomic writes, replay logic, warming, legacy-entry loading, documentation, integration changes, and tests support the static response cache in issue #2. No unrelated change is demonstrated.

Full details: Docstring Coverage

Explanation

Docstring coverage is 95.83% which is sufficient. The required threshold is 80.00%. Docstring coverage is scoped to functions touched by this diff. Analyzed 48 functions across 4 files. (1 skipped: 1 unsupported.)

Full details: Tests

Explanation

The pull request adds substantial, behavior-focused tests. TestCachePopulatedViaProxiedResponse fills the cache through the real proxy, marks the machine down, verifies the cached body is served, and verifies that no WOL packet is sent. TestCachedChunkedResponseServedCorrectly, TestWarmMachinePopulates, and TestLegacyCacheEntriesStillLoadable cover response capture, warming, and persistence compatibility. Safety tests cover credentials, private response directives, incomplete and oversized bodies, query keys, stale health, non-GET bypasses, atomic writes, TTL renewal, and configuration validation. The tests exercise both CacheStore and ProxyService paths and directly cover the main offline-cache behavior.

Full details: Linked Issues check

Explanation

Issue #2 requires immediate delivery of configured cached assets and background wake of the offline target. The PR implements cached delivery only when the machine is confirmed unhealthy. The PR description explicitly excludes wake-on-cache-hit behavior, and the tests verify that cache hits do not send WOL packets. Cache warming after a wake or at a timer interval does not satisfy the missing background wake requirement.

Resolution

Implement background wake initiation on an offline cache hit while returning the cached response immediately. Add an automated test that verifies both cached delivery and background wake.

…ashing on bad config

- never cache a response fetched with Authorization/Cookie, or one that sets a
  cookie or declares Cache-Control private/no-store/no-cache; drop Set-Cookie in
  sanitizeCachedHeaders as a second guard
- catchingBody: track io.EOF, stop buffering past CacheMaxResponseSize and drop
  the buffer, and save only a body that reached EOF within the limit - a partial
  body closed after a read error or a client disconnect must never be stored
- warm-up reads CacheMaxResponseSize+1 so an oversized body is detected and
  rejected instead of stored truncated
- reject non-positive cache ttl and warm_interval: warm_interval = "0s" panicked
  time.NewTicker inside the warming goroutine and took the proxy down at startup
- serve a cached GET only for a machine confirmed unhealthy; a healthy machine
  with a stale health entry must get its live response
- cache keys carry the query string on both the save and the serve path, so
  /models?filter=x no longer answers /models; warm-up re-fetches the same URL
- writeFileAtomic creates a unique temp file per write so concurrent saves of one
  key cannot interleave into a corrupt envelope
- regression tests for all of the above in cache_safety_test.go

- warmMachine saved any 2xx response: a warmed response that sets a cookie or
  declares Cache-Control private/no-store/no-cache is now rejected too. Save
  strips Set-Cookie but keeps the body, so without this a later offline GET was
  handed a response the upstream never meant to share
- a request carrying Authorization or Cookie is no longer answered from cache:
  every stored entry was fetched anonymously, so replaying one to a logged-in
  client answers it with a response the backend never produced for it
- Save renews the envelope once an unchanged entry is past half its TTL. The
  Timestamp inside the envelope is what expires an entry, and skipping the write
  on identical bytes left it at the original save time, so a body that never
  changes stopped being served even though warm-up re-fetched it every cycle
- regression tests for all three, each verified to fail with the fix reverted

Reject Vary responses in CacheStore.Save.

sanitizeCachedHeaders preserves Vary, while cacheKeyFor includes only the path and query. Both warmMachine and live capture can therefore save a representation selected by request headers. When the machine is down, CacheStore.Get can replay that representation to another anonymous client with different headers. Reject Vary at Save so both writers use the same protection.

Do not cache 206 Partial Content responses.

When a configured Range request receives 206, the current capture accepts it and saves the partial body under the path-and-query key. cacheKeyFor excludes the Range header. A later anonymous full GET while the machine is down can therefore receive the cached partial body and 206 status.

Hey @XBold, first, thank you. This is careful work, and you put real effort into the review rounds.

I owe you an honest update. I opened #2, but seeing a full implementation made me realize it's a bigger scope than I want doormouse to carry. It's essentially an HTTP cache, with all the edge cases that come with one (Vary, ranges, eviction, disk limits). I'd rather keep doormouse focused on waking and sleeping machines, and leave caching to tools built for it. That's the idea behind doormouse in general: do one thing well, and work alongside other tools for the rest, the same way it leaves TLS and auth to the proxy in front of it.

The good news is you can get most of this today by putting nginx, Varnish or Caddy (with a cache plugin) in front of doormouse. Fresh entries are served without touching doormouse at all, so the machine stays asleep. I'm planning to add a short README section showing how to set that up.

So I'm going to close this one, and close #2 with the same explanation. That's on me for not thinking the scope through before opening the issue. Sorry for the long wait on top of that. If you keep using the cache in your fork and run into something doormouse itself could make easier, I'd be glad to hear about it.

No worries @darksworm, I totally understand, I'll keep my branch separated with the cache feature enabled because for me it's super useful, especially for llamacpp server which most of the time, the requests made to it are pretty "static" and don't require the turn on of my main computer.
I'm just a bit sorry that I put some work for this feature hoping it could have been integrated :)

Take care!
