fix(nix): make nix.sh work from a git worktree - #434
Conversation
In a linked worktree .git is a file pointing at the main checkout's .git directory, which isn't visible in the container. Mount the shared git directory and the worktree at their host paths, overlay an absolute gitdir file, and trust the mounted directories inside the container. Review comments at @nix.sh:
- Line 129: Update the `WORKTREE_FLAGS` Git metadata mounts so writes performed
by commands in `nix develop --command` do not leave shared Git metadata owned by
container root. Run Git writes as the host user or extend the existing ownership
repair to cover changed shared metadata, preserving the current mount behavior
needed by the command.
- Line 51: Replace the wildcard `safe.directory` entry in the Git configuration
with explicit physical paths for the mounted worktrees, passing the physical
worktree path separately as needed. Preserve Git’s ownership checks for all
other repositories.

Replace safe.directory '*' with the explicit worktree and git directory paths, and include the shared git directory in the post-run ownership repair so container-written metadata isn't left root-owned. A Docker data root can only be used by one dockerd at a time, so a second nix.sh run on the shared volume (e.g. from another worktree) timed out waiting for containerd. Claim the first free data root slot with flock; the lock lives on an fd, so it is released when the container exits. Description of your changes
nix.shfailed immediately in a linked git worktree withfatal: not a git repository. In a worktree.gitis a file with a relativegitdir:pointing at the main checkout's.git, which isn't mounted in the container. On the host side, when
.gitis a file,nix.shnow:.gitfile with an absolutegitdir:.Inside the container, it adds
safe.directory '*'in worktree mode only, since the mounted git directories are owned by the host user and the container is ephemeral.Fixes #425

./nix.sh flake checkto ensure this PR is ready for review. (Passed from a worktree, which also exercises the fix.)🤖 Generated with Claude Code
