Description of your changes

Implements crossplane resource simulate per the accepted design(design/one-pager-cli-simulate.md): given YAML for one or more managed resources (-f), preview what applying them would do, provider-computed, end to end.

For each input resource the CLI fetches the live MR from the current kubeconfig context, runs the providers own package image locally as a diff server (the gRPC PlanService upjet providers now serve via internal diff-server,
merged in crossplane/upjet#765, crossplane/upjet#769, crossplane/upjet#778), and renders the providers verdict: create, update, no-op or the replace nobody spotted in review, with the unsynced-until-replaced warning. Replaces are counted separately in the summary and never presented as destroy-and-recreate.

Resources without a diff server (no DiffServer capability, no route, or the server refuses the resource) degrade to an honest client-side diff marked [?] with the approximate warning and nothing fails the run, nothing silently drops
out.

$ crossplane resource simulate -f result-yaml.yaml --providers result-provider.yaml
✓ Starting provider diff servers
[-/+] VPC.ec2.aws.m.upbound.io crossplane-system/import-vpc (replace)
    spec:
      forProvider:
        ~ cidrBlock: "192.168.0.0/16" -> "10.10.0.0/16"  # forces replacement

[+] VPC.ec2.aws.m.upbound.io crossplane-system/test123 (create)
    spec:
      forProvider:
        + cidrBlock: "10.10.0.0/16"
        + enableDnsHostnames: "true"
        + enableDnsSupport: "true"
        + instanceTenancy: "default"
        + region: "eu-central-1"

Plan: 1 to add, 0 to change, 0 to destroy, 1 requires replacement.

Warning: 1 resource has fields that force replacement: cidrBlock.
Crossplane providers never destroy and recreate to apply a change.
Applying this leaves the resource unsynced until it is replaced manually.

The design one-pager predated the merged upjet protocol

  • The provider subcommand is internal diff-server and the package capability is DiffServer (spec.capabilities); the gRPC service remains PlanService (proto/diff/v1alpha1).
  • GetInfo was dropped: routing is built client-side from the CRDs inside each provider package, by group and kind, and the capability is checked before any container starts.
  • Transport is decided: plaintext gRPC on an ephemeral localhost port, one resource per unary Plan request.
  • No diagnostics in responses; failures are gRPC statuses, with FAILED_PRECONDITION/DIFF_COMPUTATION_NOT_SUPPORTED mapping to the [?] fallback.
  • The request's kubernetes_object_store carries the referenced ProviderConfig, fetched with the user's own kubeconfig and RBAC (the server is offline and sees only what travels in the request; credentials Secrets deliberately stay out today and the server plans with placeholder, but we need this as some providers e.g. gcp uses fields like projectIds).

Groundwork for project simulate (#367)

This PR deliberately builds the shared pieces project simulate must reuse, so the two commands converge on one implementation and we need to sync in a followup PR:

  • internal/plan the typed per-resource result (actions, field changes with sensitive/known-after-apply/unresolved markers, replace paths), the diff server client, and the output renderers (-o plan|json|yaml, versioned JSON/YAML envelope with a top-level errored gate for CI).
  • internal/plan.Fallback the client-side diff ([?] path). Schema-less by design; expected to be subsumed by crossplane-diff's calculator when its machinery moves in with Add crossplane project simulate #367. -o diff is intentionally not implemented here: crossplane-diff renders real full-manifest unified diffs today, and that renderer is what -o diff should become, not a lower-fidelity imitation.

Implementation notes

  • Nix: nixpkgs-unstable bump (upjet requires Go 1.26.8) and new Go vendor hash.

Fixes #368
Implements the resource simulate half of #369 (project simulate planning, --all provider upgrade preview, and --skip-plan can followup with a new PR

Haven't made it all the way through this yet, but leaving some initial thoughts. I think the spinner change may be unnecessary after #406 is merged.

📝 Walkthrough

Adds the alpha crossplane resource simulate command. It discovers or accepts provider packages, runs provider diff servers in local containers, compares desired resources with live resources, and renders provider or approximate plans in plan, JSON, or YAML formats.

Changes: Resource Simulation

Layer / File(s) Summary
Plan contracts and diff requests
internal/plan/types.go, internal/plan/plan.go, internal/plan/proto.go, internal/plan/*_test.go
Defines resource-plan types and converts diff-server requests and responses, including field changes, replacement paths, value markers, origins, and unsupported-diff detection.
Shared container runtime
internal/containerruntime/*, cmd/crossplane/render/runtime_docker.go, cmd/crossplane/render/runtime_docker_test.go
Adds shared Docker lifecycle handling for startup, reuse, address resolution, image pulling, labels, and cleanup.
Provider diff-server lifecycle
internal/diffserver/*, internal/xpkg/metadata.go
Starts eligible provider containers, checks gRPC readiness, and routes CRD group-kinds to provider diff servers.
Approximate comparisons and external tags
internal/plan/fallback.go, internal/plan/tags.go, internal/plan/*_test.go
Adds approximate create, no-op, and update plans by comparing resource specs. It also merges matching external tags from live resources into desired resources.
Plan summaries and output formats
internal/plan/output.go, internal/plan/output_test.go
Adds plan, JSON, and YAML rendering with action summaries, replacements, approximate results, unresolved values, and planning errors.
Command orchestration and provider selection
cmd/crossplane/resource/resource.go, cmd/crossplane/simulate/*, design/one-pager-cli-simulate.md, internal/terminal/spinner.go
Adds the alpha command, Kubernetes setup, provider discovery, manifest inputs, per-resource planning, command help, design updates, tests, and terminal query suppression.

Change: Feature

Merge Risk: 🔵 Low · up to d5aee

The new alpha crossplane resource simulate command is largely mergeable, with a few minor follow-ups. If an image pull fails, the command can report it as successful and then show only a generic container-creation error. An unreadable implicit project file can be silently ignored. A failed write of plan output may not be reported. An interrupt during diff-server startup can leave containers behind. None of these corrupts data or causes broad failure.

Full details: Feature Gate Requirement

Explanation

The PR adds no files under apis/**. The new experimental resource simulate command is explicitly tagged maturity:"alpha" in cmd/crossplane/resource/resource.go. Existing startup wiring applies cfg.Features.EnableAlpha through maturity.Apply, so the command participates in the CLI feature-flag system. The check passes.

Full details: Breaking Changes

Explanation

The prior breaking-change finding remains unresolved. The PR adds the public alpha command through resource.Cmd.Simulate in cmd/crossplane/resource/resource.go. Its public simulate.Cmd.Filename field in cmd/crossplane/simulate/simulate.go:90-91 has Kong tags required:"" and short:"f", which adds a required -f/--filename flag under cmd/**. The base resource command has no Simulate field, and the supplied PR metadata has no breaking-change label.

Resolution

Remove the required:"" tag and validate the input at runtime, or apply the breaking-change label and document the required -f/--filename contract.

Full details: Linked Issues check

Explanation

Issue #368 requires resource simulate to preview against the current kubeconfig and provide shared plan|diff|json|yaml output. The command and live-resource planning are present, and plan|json|yaml are implemented. -o diff is not implemented. Issue #368 also requires approximate [?] results until the plan layer exists, while this PR returns provider-computed results for supported resources and uses [?] only as fallback. The issue still lists provider-computed planning as follow-up work.

Resolution

Please add the shared -o diff renderer and keep the behavior aligned with the current #368 acceptance criteria, or update #368 and its scope to authorize provider-computed planning and revise the output requirements.

Full details: Out of Scope Changes check

Explanation

Issue #368 explicitly excludes plan servers and provider-computed diffs. This PR adds internal/diffserver, provider capability and CRD routing, local provider-package containers, gRPC PlanService calls, provider discovery, and shared container lifecycle support for those servers. The fallback and shared plan output code support the issue, but the provider diff-server implementation is outside the linked issue scope.

Resolution

Please move the provider diff-server, provider-computed planning, and related provider-container runtime work to the authorized follow-up, or update the linked issue and its scope before including this work.

Overall, lgtm for an alpha. I will start building project simulate on top of this + diff, and we can iron out any bugs from there.

A few suggestions, but overall I agree with @jcogilvie - we can iterate after this is released as alpha.

160-161: 📐 Maintainability & Code Quality | 🔵 Trivial | ⚡ Quick win

Put the Stop case in a table-driven test.

Could you move this case into named args/want cases with a reason field? The new error assertion uses strings.Contains instead of the required cmp.Diff error comparison.

As per path instructions, “Enforce table-driven test structure: PascalCase test names (no underscores), args/want pattern, use cmp.Diff with cmpopts.EquateErrors() for error testing. Check for proper test case naming and reason fields.”

Use a table-driven structure for TestManagerStart.

The scenario subtests each set up and check their own inputs and results. Could you collect the scenarios in cases with name, args, want, and reason fields? This keeps later startup cases aligned with the repository’s test convention.

As per path instructions: “Enforce table-driven test structure: PascalCase test names (no underscores), args/want pattern.”

Refactor TestManagerStart into a table-driven test using PascalCase subtest
names and cases containing name, args, want, and reason fields. Move each
startup scenario’s setup and assertions into the shared table-driven loop,
preserving its existing inputs, expected results, and scenario rationale.
