Description of your changes

Add support to meta pkg file (crossplane.yaml) for dependency update-cache, clean-cache and add subcommands.

  • -f no longer defaults to crossplane-project.yaml only, it will look for crossplane.yaml if the former isn't found, fail if none exist.

  • Three new flags --k8s-version, --schemas-dir and --schema-languages, since crossplane.yaml is missing that information. For a project file, it will override spec.dependencies[].k8s.version, paths.schemas and spec.schemas.languages, respectively.

  • For the dependency add command, k8s, CRD, or API-only dependencies are not supported and will fail when trying to do so with a cfg pkg file (for those, migrate to a Project).

  • --k8s-version generates Kubernetes core API schemas, which dependsOn can't declare.

Fixes #391

I'm myself not sure about this; I can work a bit more on that, don't drop any information we've today, leave it for later or close the loop now and add support for some project subcommands.

Walkthrough

Dependency commands now resolve project files or Configuration package metadata, apply schema and Kubernetes overrides, and persist supported dependencies to spec.dependsOn. XR function loading uses the shared project-file resolver.

Changes: Configuration metadata dependency support

Layer / File(s) Summary
Resolve and load project inputs
internal/project/projectfile/configuration.go, internal/project/projectfile/configuration_test.go, cmd/crossplane/dependency/dependency.go, cmd/crossplane/render/xr/cmd.go
Project-file utilities resolve input paths and load project files or Configuration metadata. They convert metadata dependencies, apply schema and Kubernetes overrides, and validate supported settings. XR function loading uses the shared resolver.
Wire dependency commands to project loading
cmd/crossplane/dependency/add.go, cmd/crossplane/dependency/cache.go, cmd/crossplane/dependency/help/*, internal/schemas/generator/python.go
The add, update-cache, and clean-cache commands use resolved project paths and pass configured overrides to project loading. Help text describes metadata-file support, input selection, and options. Python schema generation adds --use-default-kwarg.
Persist dependencies to package metadata
internal/dependency/manager.go, internal/dependency/manager_test.go, internal/project/projectfile/configuration.go, internal/project/projectfile/configuration_test.go
Dependency addition rejects unsupported dependency types for Configuration metadata and writes supported xpkg dependencies to spec.dependsOn. Tests cover adding dependencies and updating or appending metadata entries.

Merge Risk: Low · previous review d12a0

Dependency metadata may accumulate duplicate entries in a narrow update path; this is bounded but should be corrected or accepted.

Security architecture risk: Low · up to c2b7b

Configuration metadata can now drive authenticated package downloads and dependency-file updates. The inspected command paths preserve input validation and supported-dependency restrictions, and XR function execution behavior is unchanged. No introduced security vulnerability was established, but interruption and concurrent-write recovery remain incompletely evidenced.

Retained concerns
No architecture-level concerns identified.

Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • inferred — Someone controlling the selected Configuration metadata can influence direct and transitive registry destinations when an operator runs update-cache. The inspected exposure includes registry requests under the operator's available keychain and package/schema writes under the CLI's filesystem permissions; no new cluster-execution path was established.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • observed — The normal command path validates the selected input through projectfile.Load before manager construction. Metadata conversion does not import arbitrary project paths or Git/HTTP dependency sources. Schema-directory overrides must be lexical local subdirectories; package-cache location remains separately operator-selected.

Resilience and Maintainability Implications

  • observed — The manager serializes its own dependency persistence with a mutex, and exact repository matches are replaced in place. This is not a cross-process lock or a transaction spanning generated schemas and metadata; the same broad recovery limitation existed for project-file updates.

Hardening Proposals

  • proposed — Consider atomic replacement and conflict detection for both persistence formats, together with an explicit recovery policy for derived schemas after persistence failure. These would strengthen inherited interruption and concurrent-write handling, not remediate an established introduced security vulnerability.

Full details: Linked Issues check

Explanation

Issue #391 requires dependency update-cache, clean-cache, and add to accept crossplane.yaml as a first-class input. The PR adds shared file resolution with crossplane-project.yaml precedence and crossplane.yaml fallback. It converts package dependencies for cache operations, writes supported dependencies to spec.dependsOn, and rejects unsupported Kubernetes, CRD, and API-only additions. The PR adds tests for loading, overrides, persistence, and rejection cases.

Full details: Out of Scope Changes check

Explanation

The changes stay within issue #391. Shared resolution, CLI flags, package metadata conversion, schema generation behavior, help text, and tests support dependency commands with project or package metadata files. No unrelated change is demonstrated.

Full details: Breaking Changes

Explanation

No breaking change is introduced in the affected cmd/** files. The existing -f/--project-file flags remain, and existing flags retain their names. The new --schemas-dir, --schema-languages, and --k8s-version flags are optional. The removed resolveProjectFile method was private, and its project-file detection behavior is replaced by projectfile.Resolve. Existing project-file workflows remain supported; package metadata support is additive.

Full details: Feature Gate Requirement

Explanation

The PR adds significant ungated behavior. loadProject now autodetects crossplane-project.yaml or crossplane.yaml and applies new schema/Kubernetes overrides, while Manager.AddDependency writes runtime xpkg dependencies into spec.dependsOn for package metadata. No changed code adds or checks a feature flag, and no files under apis/** changed. The existing dependency maturity:"beta" tag is pre-existing; internal/maturity documents that disabled maturity commands remain callable, so it does not gate this behavior.

Resolution

Add a dedicated configuration feature flag for package-metadata dependency support and the new override behavior. Expose it through crossplane config set, document its default and enablement, check it before the new package-metadata paths execute, and add tests for enabled and disabled behavior. Keep the existing project-file path unchanged when the flag is disabled.

Compare normalized package repositories before upserting.

ParseConfiguration accepts a dependency package reference and keeps its tag or digest separate from version. If the existing entry contains package: repo:v1.0.0 or package: repo@sha256:..., while AddDependency supplies repo, the raw comparison does not match and appends a duplicate. Could you parse both values with name.ParseReference and compare Context().Name()?

A few specific comments inline, but a more general thought here:

Rather than having the projectfile package handle regular package metadata and having the dependency manager know which kind of metadata it's dealing with, I wonder if we should abstract over the two types and have the dependency manager deal with the abstraction. Then the dependency commands can load whichever type they need, create an appropriate manager, and the manager works the same either way.

## Package metadata files

The command can also add a dependency to `Configuration` package metadata (`crossplane.yaml`).

Nit: I don't think this is specific to Configuration, right? All package types can have deps.

Use `--schemas-dir` to choose where schemas are generated (default `schemas`), and
`--schema-languages` to generate only some languages (default all).

What's the use-case for having schemas outside of a project? I'd be inclined to simplify (for now, at least) by making the dep commands skip schema generation/management when called in a non-project package. That said, if you have a use-case in mind here I'm interested :-).

Comment on lines +22 to +24
Package metadata can't declare Kubernetes core API dependencies.
Use `--k8s-version` to generate schemas for them (for example `ServiceAccount` or `ConfigMap`).
For a project file, the flag replaces its `k8s` dependency. The file is never changed.

I think I'd rather put this kind of functionality under a new crossplane schema top-level command. Having crossplane dependency update-cache generate schemas for things that aren't actually dependencies of the package feels like a confusing UX.
