Summary

Cookie-blocked visitors could never load the catalog. The gateway session was cookie-only, and that cookie is third-party:

renderdragon.org ──fetch(credentials:"include")──> gateway.codersoft.xyz
                                                       │
   + Set-Cookie: rdgw=…; HttpOnly; Secure; SameSite=None
                                                       │
Safari/ITP · Brave · Chrome incognito · strict ETP  ✗ discard (3rd-party)
                                                       │
   GET /all  ── no rdgw ──> 401 session_required
   GET /__session ──> 401  ──> Turnstile again ──> 401
                                                       │
                       fetchJson catch -> [] -> "No resources found"
 workers/assets-gateway/src/index.ts
   establishSession()
-    return jsonResponse({ ok, expiresAt })              # token only in Set-Cookie
+ return jsonResponse({ ok, expiresAt, token }) # token also in the body
   sessionStatus() / proxy()
-    token = getCookie(request, COOKIE_NAME)
+    token = getBearerToken(request) ?? getCookie(request, COOKIE_NAME)
   STRIP_FROM_REQUEST
+ "authorization" # never proxied upstream

 src/lib/assetsApi.ts
   acquireSession()
+    storeToken(body.token)                               # localStorage + memory
   hasSession() / fetchFromAssetsApi()
+    Authorization: Bearer <token>
+    on 401: storeToken(null) -> re-establish -> retry once

 src/lib/api.ts
   fetchAllResources() / fetchCategory()
+    fresh cache -> fetch -> stale cache -> per-category caches -> throw ResourceApiError

 src/components/resources/ResourcesList.tsx
+ "Couldn't load resources" + Try Again (was: "No resources found")

Cookies stay the primary transport (unchanged for browsers that accept them); the bearer token is the fallback. The token is only readable by CORS-allowed origins, and HttpOnly still applies to the cookie.

Evidence

  • Before (live gateway, same state as a cookie-blocked browser — no cookie sent):
    GET  https://gateway.codersoft.xyz/__session  -> 401 {"ok":false}
    POST https://gateway.codersoft.xyz/__session  -> 200, body {"ok":true,"expiresAt":…}   # no token

  • After (needs wrangler deploy of workers/assets-gateway):
    TOKEN=$(curl -s -X POST https://gateway.codersoft.xyz/__session \
      -H 'Origin: https://renderdragon.org' -H 'content-type: application/json' \
      -d '{"turnstileToken":"<token>"}' | python3 -c 'import sys,json;print(json.load(sys.stdin)["token"])')
    curl -si https://gateway.codersoft.xyz/__session -H "Authorization: Bearer $TOKEN"   # expect 200 {"ok":true}
    curl -si https://gateway.codersoft.xyz/all        -H "Authorization: Bearer $TOKEN"   # expect 200 + catalog
    Local wrangler dev could not run: workerd requires macOS >= 13.5 and this host is 12.6.
  • Static checks on this branch: pnpm exec tsc -b (no new errors; 8 pre-existing untouched), pnpm lint (1 pre-existing warning), pnpm exec vite build ✓, and workers/assets-gateway: pnpm typecheck ✓.
  • Manual check for an affected user: DevTools → /api/assets-gw/all returns 401 and Application → Cookies → gateway.codersoft.xyz has no rdgw.

Merge Danger

Door: two-way — revertable, and cookie sessions are untouched, so non-affected users keep today's exact path.

Blast Radius: shared session

The gateway serves Resources Hub, Font Picker, Showcases and the Background Generator, so the bearer change touches all four (positively: they fail today for the same users). The client keeps credentials: "include", so if the new token is absent (older gateway) behaviour is unchanged. The Worker must be deployed for the fix to take effect; the client alone only improves the error state.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features
    • Resource pages now show a clear error message and offer a retry when resources can’t be loaded. If some resources are already available, they remain visible with a refresh warning and an optional retry.
    • Resource lists can fall back to previously saved data during network problems, helping keep categories and resources available.
    • Asset access can authenticate in browsers that block third-party cookies.
  • Bug Fixes
    • Empty results from a successful resource request are now shown as empty results rather than treated as a loading failure.

…s load resources

The gateway session (`rdgw`) is a third-party cookie (renderdragon.org ->
gateway.codersoft.xyz). Safari/ITP, Brave, Chrome incognito and strict ETP/Firefox
drop it silently, so `hasSession()` and every catalog request returned 401 for
those visitors. The client turned that failure into an empty list, so the page
rendered "No resources found" permanently for them (same for Font Picker,
Showcases and the Background Generator, which share the session).

- Gateway: return the minted session token in the `POST /__session` body and
  accept `Authorization: Bearer <token>` anywhere a session is required, in
  addition to the cookie. Strip `authorization` before proxying upstream.
- Client: persist the token (localStorage + memory, keyed by gateway base) and
  replay it as a bearer header; keep `credentials: include` so cookie-capable
  browsers are unchanged. Clear and re-establish once on 401.
- Catalog reads no longer report failure as emptiness: fall back to the stale
  cache (then per-category caches) and surface a real error state with Retry on
  Resources Hub instead of "No resources found".

📝 Walkthrough

Resource loading now uses stale cache fallbacks and reports fetch errors with retry actions. The asset gateway and client support bearer-token authentication alongside session cookies.

Changes: Resource Loading and Recovery

Layer / File(s) Summary
Cache-backed resource fallbacks
src/lib/cache.ts, src/lib/api.ts
Cache reads now support stale entries. Resource API methods use cached data after fetch failures and throw ResourceApiError when no fallback is available.
Resource error and retry handling
src/hooks/useResources.ts, src/components/resources/ResourcesList.tsx, src/pages/ResourcesHub.tsx
useResources exposes load errors and a retry callback. ResourcesHub passes them to ResourcesList, which displays error or refresh-warning states.

Asset Gateway Authentication

Layer / File(s) Summary
Gateway bearer-token session support
workers/assets-gateway/src/index.ts, workers/assets-gateway/README.md
The gateway returns session tokens in response bodies and accepts bearer tokens or cookies for session checks and proxy requests. The README documents these options.
Client token storage and requests
src/lib/assetsApi.ts
The client stores session tokens by gateway base URL and sends them with asset requests. After a 401, it clears the token before re-establishing the session and retrying.

Bearer sessions should restore resource loading in cookie-blocked browsers. Token exposure in cookie-capable sessions and across reloads warrants bounded security follow-up, but does not currently block merging.

Return tokens only for explicit bearer fallback

POST /__session currently returns a token for every successful acquisition. The client calls acquireSession() whenever hasSession() fails, including the first load in a cookie-capable browser. Adding a flag to the current request alone would therefore still request a token on the cookie path.

First establish the cookie without requesting a body token. Then call hasSession() again. Only when that check fails should the client repeat the request with an explicit bearer-token flag and store the returned token. Preserve the existing 401 retry flow.

The body token is readable by page JavaScript and is stored in localStorage. Keep the short session TTL. A strict CSP remains defense in depth.

Do not persist the gateway bearer token in localStorage.

The gateway intentionally exposes the token to allowed origins so cookie-blocked browsers can use bearer authentication. A script on an allowed origin that has an accepted verification payload can call POST /__session and read a fresh token, so memory-only storage does not prevent active-script replay.

Memory-only storage still removes the valid token that remains readable after reload. Keep this as defense in depth. The repository guidance does not require a strict CSP or prohibit localStorage.
