feat(comark)!: decode HTML attributes with attribute semantics, pluggable textContent decoder - #511
Decodes raw HTML attributes the way browsers do, dedupes entities with markdown-exit, and turns the textContent decoding flag into a pluggable function.
Breaking changes
textContent(node, { decodeUnicodeEntities }) is replaced by textContent(node, { decodeHTML }), which takes a function applied to each text node. Text in parsed documents is already entity-decoded, so this is only needed for hand-built trees.
Dependencies: entities catalog range lowered from ^8.1.0 to ^7.0.0 to match markdown-exit, so installs resolve a single copy (entities@7.0.1) instead of two.
Benchmarks: new benchmarks/html.bench.ts with an HTML-attribute-heavy fixture. The existing fixtures barely contain raw HTML, so this path was not measured.

Performance-neutral. An intermediate version of this PR used markdown-exit's unescapeAll, which was ~2.8x slower in the decoder and less correct, and was dropped. The earlier CodSpeed +39% on parse › small document was runner noise (base and head ran on different runner types; that fixture has no raw HTML).
Validation
pnpm lint, pnpm typecheck, and packages/comark tests (1,787 passed). Added regression tests for attribute decoding edge cases and textContent({ decodeHTML }).
Summary by CodeRabbit
Bug Fixes
HTML attribute values now follow browser-style entity decoding, while preserving literal backslashes and boolean attributes.
Text extraction leaves string content unchanged by default and can optionally decode HTML entities per text node.
Documentation
Clarified that parsed document text is already entity-decoded and how to decode text from hand-built nodes.
Tests
Added coverage for attribute parsing and text extraction behavior.
BREAKING CHANGE: `decodeHTML` is no longer exported from `comark/utils`, and `textContent()` no longer accepts the `decodeUnicodeEntities` option. Text nodes are already entity-decoded by the parser; import `decodeHTML` from `entities` directly if you still need it.

Walkthrough
HTML attribute parsing now uses attribute-context entity decoding. The textContent utility accepts an optional callback to decode each text node. Tests, documentation, and benchmarks cover these changes.
textContent accepts an optional decodeHTML callback and applies it to each string node during recursive traversal. Tests and documentation cover callback behavior.

Attribute parsing uses decodeHTMLAttribute for values containing ampersands. Tests cover browser-style decoding rules. The entities catalog version changes to ^7.0.0. A fixture supports benchmarks with two parser configurations, and the bundle-size snapshot changes to 390k; the file count remains 152.

Some benchmarks with significant performance changes were compared across different runner types, so the changes might not come from the code. Run base and head on the same runner type, or use CodSpeed Macro Runners for more stable results.

The +39% on render html::small document doesn't come from this PR. It's measurement noise in the base run.
Why I say that
The benchmark doesn't run the changed code. It renders a document that was already parsed before timing starts. This PR only changes parse-time code (parseHtmlAttributes decoding) and textContent, and neither shows up in this benchmark's profile.
The comark functions cost the same in base and head. Comparing the two flamegraphs, html (195.6 → 195.7 µs self), applyContext (107.7 → 107.8 µs), createState (75.6 → 74.9 µs), one, render, escapeHtml and findHandler are all within about 1%.
The whole gap is in Node's internal async queue.processTicksAndRejections (Node's code for running pending async callbacks) dropped from 351.7 µs self time on base to 27.1 µs on head. That's about 325 µs, which is the full difference (1,149.6 → 824.9 µs). It isn't comark code. On base, that time included 8 system calls (~186 µs) plus extra cache and memory cost, most likely the runtime doing one-off work such as garbage collection or growing the heap during the single measured iteration. The base result even has CodSpeed's "Dominated by system calls" warning. Head has 0 system calls.
The runners were different. Base ran on an AMD EPYC 7763 and head on an AMD EPYC 9V45, which is what the report's warning refers to. The CPU simulation models caches from the physical CPU, so a short benchmark like this one can shift on identical code.
The other 40 benchmarks didn't change, including every parse benchmark, which do run the changed code.
Conclusion: the PR is performance-neutral. This benchmark is very short (about 0.8 ms per iteration), so one stray runtime event in Node shows up as a big percentage change.
If you want this benchmark to be less noisy, two options:
make the iteration longer, for example by rendering the small document several times per iteration
measure it with the walltime instrument on CodSpeed Macro Runners
BREAKING CHANGE: textContent() no longer accepts the decodeUnicodeEntities boolean. Pass a decoder instead, e.g. textContent(node, { decodeHTML }) with decodeHTML from entities. It is applied to each text node.

Add explicit callback types.
Give the three it callbacks a void return type. Give the decodeHTML callback an explicit text: string parameter and string return type. As per coding guidelines: “Use explicit types for function parameters and return values.”
