security() only URL-checked props named href, xlink:href and src, and only at the top level. Component props reach framework renderers verbatim, so untrusted Markdown could still produce script URLs and raw-HTML sinks. These inputs passed through unchanged before this PR:

::callout{to="javascript:alert(1)"}
click
::

::u-button{:links='[{"to":"javascript:alert(3)"}]' label-html="<img src=x onerror=alert(4)>"}
::
<svg><a><animate attributeName="href" values="javascript:alert(7)"/><text x="0" y="20">click</text></a></svg>
# YAML props on a component
.innerHTML: <img src=x onerror=alert(1)>
^onclick: alert(1)

to reaches NuxtLink / RouterLink, which renders <a href="javascript:…">. Nuxt UI renders labelHtml, descriptionHtml and similar fields with v-html. Vue's h() treats .x / ^x keys as the DOM property / attribute x.

Changes (packages/comark/src/internal/props-validation.ts)

  • Prop name normalization: names are lowercased. Binding prefixes (:, v-bind:), Vue's . / ^ prefixes, and : / - / _ separators are stripped before every check, so .innerHTML, ^onclick and label-html hit the same rules as innerHTML, onclick and labelHtml.
  • URL props: the existing script-URL hard floor and the allowlist options now apply to more names: href, src, to, action, poster, cite, background and ping, plus any name ending in href, src, url, uri or link, optionally plural (xlink:href, imageUrl, avatar-src, links). Names ending in src, and poster, use the image policy (allowedImagePrefixes, allowDataImages). The other URL props use the link policy.
  • Markup props: any name ending in html (innerHTML, labelHtml, description-html, v-html) is rejected like innerHTML. I think this belongs in comark: the plugin already strips innerHTML / dangerouslySetInnerHTML because renderers forward props verbatim, and *Html is the same sink one component away.
  • SVG animation: attributeName is removed when it targets href / xlink:href, after entity decoding (raw HTML attribute values are not decoded by the parser). This is DOMPurify's approach. It disarms values, from, to and by together without parsing SMIL value lists.
  • Nested values: object and array values are validated recursively at any depth. Object keys go through the full validateProp rules. Array items are checked against the name of the prop that holds them (:hrefs='["javascript:…"]'). Only the unsafe nested entries are dropped; the rest of the value is kept ([{to: 'javascript:…', label: 'Docs'}] becomes [{label: 'Docs'}]). JSON binding strings (:links='[…]' in raw HTML stays a string) are decoded, sanitized and re-encoded. Non-string href / src values are still rejected outright (security() plugin silently strips any prop whose value is false #367). to and *link keep objects, because they accept route objects.
  • validateProps passes the $ metadata key through unchanged, so nested-key rules (such as html) don't touch it.
  • resolveAttributes: the render-time HTML-sink floor (innerHTML, textContent, …) now strips . / ^ too. YAML props can put .innerHTML in the tree even when security() is not enabled.

Boundary tradeoff: why name-based rather than validating every string

Validating every string value would be the simplest rule, but it can't tell a script URL apart from prose. new URL('JavaScript: the good parts') parses as a javascript: URL, the same as javascript: alert(1). Rejecting every string that starts with a blocked scheme would therefore strip titles, labels and descriptions. Instead, props are matched by name. There is a fixed list of URL-bearing HTML/SVG/router names, plus suffixes that cover the usual naming of custom-component URL props (imageUrl, ctaLink, avatarSrc). The checks run at every depth, so nested to / href inside link arrays are covered.

I did not add a configurable list. The suffixes cover the common naming conventions without per-app setup. A config option would make the safe behavior opt-in, and a missing entry fails open. If a project has URL props with unusual names (for example destination), a urlProps option could be added later.

The remaining false positives are deliberate: props whose names end in html are dropped even when they are boolean flags such as allowHtml, which would enable raw HTML anyway. A link or url prop is dropped only when its value actually resolves to a blocked scheme.

Behavior change for allowlist users: allowedProtocols, allowedLinkPrefixes, allowedImagePrefixes, defaultOrigin and allowDataImages now also apply to the new URL props. For example, to="http://…" with allowedProtocols: ['https'] is now removed. A link prop that bypassed the allowlist was a gap of its own, so this is a tightening. Docs are updated.

Not covered

Dot-path bindings that resolve at render time (:to="frontmatter.link", :links="frontmatter.links") are only covered by the existing render-time floor in resolveAttributes. That floor checks string href / src / xlink:href only. If frontmatter is also untrusted, to and nested objects resolved from it are not validated. Closing this would mean extending that floor (or running security() over frontmatter), which is better done as a separate change.

Tests

Regression tests in test/plugins/security.test.ts (end to end through parseMarkdown, using the exact inputs above), test/props-validation.test.ts and test/resolve-attributes.test.ts. They cover:

  • to (including entity- and percent-encoded forms and JSON-quoted bindings), *Url, *Link, *Src, action and poster
  • recursive arrays and objects, including the raw-HTML JSON-string form
  • *Html / *-html props
  • SVG animate / set targeting href / xlink:href (also entity-encoded and bound)
  • . / ^ prefixes, at parse time and at render time
  • false positives: title="JavaScript: the good parts", description="vbscript: a history", label="javascript:…" in non-URL props, https:, mailto:, relative and #anchor URLs in to, route objects in :to, data:image/* with allowDataImages: true, and SVG animations of other attributes
  • a JSON __proto__ key stays plain data during recursion

The 15 new vulnerability tests fail on main and pass with this change. The false-positive tests pass on both.

pnpm lint, pnpm typecheck and pnpm test (all packages) pass. One run hit a 10 ms beforeAll hook timeout in COMARK/emoji-inside-component-autounwrap.md, which is unrelated to this change; it passed on rerun.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Bug Fixes
    • Improved security checks for URL-bearing attributes and component props, including less common URL fields, SVG link targets, and Vue-style attribute prefixes.
    • Unsafe URLs, event handlers, HTML-injection props, and unsafe values nested in arrays or objects are now filtered more consistently. Safe URLs, allowed data images, and ordinary text remain supported.
    • Unsafe data URLs with whitespace between the scheme and MIME type are now filtered from links, images, and component props.
  • Documentation
    • Expanded the security guidance to cover URL-prop checks, nested values, and data-image handling.

- Treat `to`, other URL attributes, and `*href`/`*src`/`*url`/`*uri`/`*link`
  props as URL props, so script URLs are rejected outside href/src.
- Validate object/array prop values recursively, including JSON
  binding strings, dropping nested on*, *Html and unsafe URL keys.
- Reject `*Html`/`*-html` markup props and SVG `attributeName` targeting href.
- Strip Vue `.prop`/`^attr` prefixes before validation and in the
  render-time HTML sink floor.

4 findings · reviewed 514934e

🟠 includes(’href’) rejects unrelated SVG animation targets · internal/props-validation.ts:285

Correctness · internal/props-validation.ts:285 · in Props Validator

validateValue rejects any attributeName containing href, so valid animations targeting attributes such as data-href are removed.

Fix: Compare the decoded attributeName to the exact link targets href and xlink:href in validateValue.

🟠 validateValue treats a ping list as one URL · internal/props-validation.ts:288

Security · internal/props-validation.ts:288 · in Props Validator

validateValue sends the whole space-separated ping list to one validateUrl call; parsing fails and the value passes as relative input, so the browser can send pings to hosts outside the configured allowlist.

Fix: Split ping values on ASCII whitespace and validate each URL in validateValue.

🟠 URL_PROPS has no check for resolved bindings · internal/props-validation.ts:221

Security · internal/props-validation.ts:221 · in Props Validator

validateProp accepts frontmatter.link as a relative string, then resolveAttributes replaces it with javascript:alert(1) without rechecking to. A link component receives the unsafe URL.

Fix: Validate resolved URL props before forwarding them, using the same link or image policy applied during parsing.

🟠 validateProp discards rewritten binding URLs · internal/props-validation.ts:274

Security · internal/props-validation.ts:274 · in Props Validator

validateProp returns the original value after validating decoded, so a JSON-string :to binding keeps its disallowed host when defaultOrigin rewrites it.

Fix: Return the rewritten URL for JSON-string URL bindings while preserving the original value for unresolved path bindings.

1. [medium, correctness] packages/comark/src/internal/props-validation.ts line 285
   Problem: `includes('href')` rejects unrelated SVG animation targets. `validateValue` rejects any `attributeName` containing `href`, so valid animations targeting attributes such as `data-href` are removed.
   Fix: Compare the decoded `attributeName` to the exact link targets `href` and `xlink:href` in `validateValue`.

Pushed a small follow-up: data: text/html,… (with a space) was getting past the hard floor. new URL().href keeps the space, but browsers trim it and render HTML. I checked in Chromium with an <iframe src>.

Impact is low (opaque origin, and top-level data: navigation is blocked), but it broke the "always blocked" guarantee, and with this PR it also reached to and *Url. The fix trims spaces after data: in validateUrl() and isUnsafeUrlValue(). I added tests for it, plus a render-time :^href test.

🔒 Security & Privacy | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick win

Apply the URL guard to resolved to bindings.

When :to="frontmatter.link" resolves to an unsafe URL, validateProps() has already validated only the literal binding expression. The render-time guard excludes to, so the unsafe value reaches the documented URL-valued to prop. Include to in this guard.
