What

Custom heading ids now survive a markdown round trip: # Product Documentation {#prod-doc} renders back unchanged, because renderMarkdown writes {#id} whenever a heading's id differs from the auto-generated one. headingIds also accepts 'nested' (default, same as true) and 'flat' (no parent-id prefix), alongside false.

Why

The stringifier always dropped heading ids, so custom ids were silently lost on parse → renderMarkdown. To decide which ids are implicit, the renderer replays the parser's id generation (now shared in internal/heading-id.ts), and since that depends on the mode, RenderMarkdownOptions takes the same headingIds option. Mismatched modes stay lossless and only add redundant {#id}s. Storing the mode in document.meta was considered but would have changed parse output for everyone.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features

    • Heading IDs are now flat by default, based on each heading’s visible text. Nested IDs remain available as an option, prefixing child IDs with an eligible parent heading’s ID.
    • Duplicate and conflicting heading IDs receive unique numeric suffixes. Explicit IDs are preserved, and custom IDs are retained when rendering Markdown.
    • Heading ID options support flat, nested, and disabled modes for parsing and rendering.
  • Documentation

    • Added examples and reference details for heading ID modes, custom IDs, and duplicate handling.

📝 Walkthrough

The parser now supports flat and nested heading IDs through shared generation utilities. The stringifier omits generated IDs from Markdown and retains differing explicit IDs. Tests, specifications, and documentation cover the options, duplicate handling, and heading attributes.

Changes: Heading ID generation and serialization

Layer / File(s) Summary
Heading ID options and parser generation
packages/comark/src/types.ts, packages/comark/src/internal/heading-id.ts, packages/comark/src/internal/parse/*
HeadingIdsOption supports false, true, 'flat', and 'nested'. Shared utilities generate slugs and collision-safe IDs. The parser uses flat IDs by default and reserves explicit IDs.
Heading ID serialization
packages/comark/src/internal/stringify/handlers/heading.ts, packages/comark/src/types.ts, docs/content/2.syntax/3.attributes.md, docs/content/5.reference/0.render.md, packages/comark/SPEC/COMARK/heading-attributes*.md
The stringifier omits a heading ID when it matches the generated ID and retains a differing explicit ID. Renderer option documentation and heading-attribute examples describe this behavior.
Heading ID validation and reference updates
packages/comark/test/*, packages/comark/SPEC/COMARK/*, packages/comark/SPEC/common-mark/*, docs/content/2.syntax/*, docs/content/5.reference/*, docs/skills/comark/references/markdown-syntax.md, AGENTS.md, test/bundle.test.ts
Tests, specifications, and documentation cover flat and nested modes, disabled generation, duplicate suffixes, collisions, and heading attributes. Existing examples now show flat IDs where generated IDs previously included ancestor prefixes.

Merge Risk: ⚪ Minimal · up to 3b7a8

This change adds configurable heading IDs and preserves explicit IDs during rendering. The supplied current-head evidence shows no unresolved material regression, so the PR is ready for normal checks.

Security architecture risk: 🟡 Moderate · up to 3961b

Preserved heading IDs can become new attributes when generated Markdown is parsed again, potentially creating executable event attributes. Shared parsing also changes isolation for stateful extensions. Downstream validation limits exposure, but its consistent use is not established.

Retained concerns

  • Medium · security · inferred: Heading serialization newly emits unrestricted explicit IDs using unquoted # shorthand. A quoted ID containing attribute syntax can therefore become additional attributes after a Markdown round trip. Security validation applied only before serialization does not preserve its guarantee across this transformation.
  • Low · security · inferred: The new cache shares plugin-configured mutable parsing engines between distinct parser factories based on plugin function identity. Plugins may install instance-local mutable state, but the public plugin contract does not require statelessness. Cross-owner state or control drift is therefore possible for such extensions, although no affected built-in security control or actual leak was established.
Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • inferred — The serialization concern requires control of a heading ID, a subsequent reparse, and consumption without renewed attribute filtering. Its immediate scope is the document; if event attributes reach a browser, exposure extends to the viewing application's origin and available privileges. The cache concern spans parser owners sharing a plugin key within one loaded module instance. No concrete tenant, service, credential, or deployment exposure is established.

Security Findings and Attack Paths

  • inferred — A heading attribute id='safe onclick="alert(1)"' is parsed as one literal ID. The changed handler emits {#safe onclick="alert(1)"}, which the attribute grammar interprets as an ID plus an onclick attribute. The HTML attribute emitter accepts that attribute name. This establishes a source-backed attribute-promotion path, not demonstrated browser execution; downstream filtering and browser policy determine exploitability.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • inferred — Direct HTML serialization keeps the original payload inside an escaped ID value. Validation rejects on-prefixed attribute names, so applying it after reparse interrupts the promoted-event path. Validation of the initial ID alone does not reject syntax embedded in its value. The default parser plugin list does not include the security plugin.

Resilience and Maintainability Implications

  • observed — The engine cache is bounded to 32 entries and keys ordered plugin function identities plus linkify configuration. Initialization completes before publication, and each tokenization receives a fresh environment. Parse failure does not evict or reset the shared engine. These controls bound cache retention and separate environments, but do not reset mutable state installed on the engine by extensions.

Hardening Proposals

  • proposed — Use ID shorthand only for values that are safe under the attribute grammar; otherwise preserve the ID using a correctly quoted representation. Restrict engine sharing to configurations with an explicit statelessness guarantee, or retain separate engines for unrestricted extensions.

Reserve effective explicit heading IDs in the tracker.

nextHeadingId reserves only its generated ID. The later userAttrs.id override is not added to usedIds. Therefore, # Foo {#foo-1} followed by # Foo can assign foo-1 to both headings, contrary to the documented duplicate-ID suffix behavior.

Store the allocated parent ID in the nested stack.

For ## Setup, ### Install, ## Setup, ### Install, the second parent receives setup-1, but its child receives setup-install-1. The child ID does not use its parent’s ID as the documented nested prefix. Push the allocated ID after collision resolution, and update the nested-mode assertions to match. The changed test in packages/comark/test/heading-ids.test.ts currently expects the inconsistent prefix.
