Description

Linear: MOBILE-667 (Expo part). Android side: clerk/clerk-android#1097.

From April 2027, Google Play requires apps with sign-in to keep users signed in when they move to a new Android device (Restore Credentials). Expo apps that use the prebuilt native AuthView had no way to turn this on.

This adds an opt-in enableRestoreCredentials?: boolean prop (default false) to AuthView:

<AuthView enableRestoreCredentials />
  • JS/TS: the prop is declared and documented on AuthViewProps (Android only, opt-in, needs passkeys enabled on the instance). @clerk/expo/native-components re-exports these types, so it needs no change.
  • Android: ClerkAuthViewModule gets an enableRestoreCredentials view prop and passes it to the Compose AuthView(enableRestoreCredentials = ...) from clerk-android fix(clerk-js): Form errors not displayed when form submitted with enter #1097. With it on, a signed-out AuthView tries the restore credential that device setup transferred, but only on the first launch after the app is installed or restored onto a device. After sign-in or sign-up it creates a restore credential for the signed-in user in the background. That replaces the one this device created for the same user before, and the device's single restore credential belongs to the most recent user. It needs passkeys enabled as a first factor.
  • Session end: a sign-out from JS doesn't go through the native SDK's sign-out, so before this it left the device's restore key in place. ClerkExpoModule now watches Clerk.clientFlow and calls Clerk.restoreCredentials.clear() whenever a signed-in (active or pending) session disappears from the client, whichever side ended it. That matches native signOut(sessionId), which clears the key even when other sessions remain. Watching the flow, rather than comparing the client around a JS-requested refreshClient, means the key is still cleared when native sees the signed-out client first. A failed clear is logged and not retried, as in the native SDK. The check is a small signedInSessionEnded(previous, current) helper with a plain JUnit test (SignedInSessionEndedTest). The module's Kotlin tests need an Expo host project and aren't run in CI, so I ran that test by copying the helper and test into clerk-android 1.3.0's :source:api unit tests (2 passed).
  • iOS: the prop is accepted and ignored. AuthView only forwards it to the native view on Android, so the iOS view definition is unchanged.

Main now pins clerk-android 1.3.0, which includes enableRestoreCredentials (clerk/clerk-android#1097, released in 1.2.0), so no version bump is needed here. I haven't compiled the module in an Expo app or run it on a device.

Possible follow-up: standalone JS APIs for restore credentials (create / sign in / clear) outside of AuthView. Those need a design for syncing auth state between the native SDK and the JS client, so they're not in this PR.

📝 Walkthrough

The changes add an opt-in enableRestoreCredentials prop to AuthView and pass it to the Android native view. The prop defaults to false and is undefined on other platforms. Android client synchronization detects when a previous active or pending session ID is absent from the current client and launches restore-credential cleanup. Tests cover prop forwarding by platform and session-change detection.

Priority: ➖ Normal

Estimated code review effort: 3 (Moderate) | ~20 minutes

Merge Risk: 🟡 Moderate · up to a8365

Switching the Clerk configuration while a user is signed in can leave their Android restore credential on the device, so a later first-launch restore could sign them back in. A failed clear is also not retried, and the docs currently say deletion is guaranteed. Fix the configuration-switch cleanup and soften the documentation before merging.

commit: a8365c1

…the restore key on JS sign-out

Match the final clerk/clerk-android#1097 behaviour in the AuthView TSDoc and the changeset: restore is tried only on the first launch after install or restore, the device's restore key belongs to the most recent user and replaces that user's previous one, and passkeys must be a first factor.

When a JS-originated client sync takes the client from having sessions to none, call Clerk.restoreCredentials.clear() so a JS sign-out deletes the device's restore key like a native sign-out does.

Watch the native client instead of comparing it around a JS-requested
refresh, so a sign-out that native sees first still clears the key, and
clear it when any signed-in session ends, as native signOut(sessionId) does.

Add an `enableRestoreCredentials` prop to `AuthView` that turns on [Restore Credentials](https://developer.android.com/identity/sign-in/restore-credentials) on Android, so users stay signed in when they move to a new device. It is off by default and ignored on iOS. When it is on, on the first launch after the app is installed or restored onto a device, a signed-out `AuthView` silently signs the user in with the restore credential transferred from their old device. Later launches don't try again. After a sign-in or sign-up, it creates a restore credential for the signed-in user in the background, replacing the one this device created for that user before; a device holds one restore credential, for the user who most recently signed in. Passkeys must be enabled as a first factor for your Clerk instance. On Android, when a signed-in session on the device ends, including a sign-out from JavaScript, the device's restore credential is deleted.

Add the prop to the public Expo reference.

The repository PR checklist requires applicable documentation updates. enableRestoreCredentials is a new public AuthView prop, but the Expo reference does not document it. Add its Android-only behavior to clerk-docs before release.

Clear restore credentials before switching configurations.

Clerk.switchConfiguration calls reset(), which emits null on clientFlow without clearing restore credentials. The observer skips cleanup for null, then sets previousClient to null. The next client can no longer identify the previous signed-in session, so its restore credential can remain stored.

Await cleanup before resetting the SDK:

Document the cleanup failure mode.

The PR objective states that failed credential clears are logged and not retried. A failed clear can leave the restore credential present, but this text states that deletion always succeeds. Document deletion as best effort, or add a retry guarantee before using unconditional wording. Update the matching changeset text if needed.

This looks good to me. Pinning clerk-android 1.3.0 (which has AuthView(enableRestoreCredentials)) and resolving the merge conflict cleared what was blocking it. Watching clientFlow holds up better than comparing the client before and after a JS refresh. I checked these against the 1.3.0 SDK sources:

  • Auth.signOut(sessionId) clears the key even when other sessions remain, so the parity claim holds.
  • Clerk.reset() sets the client to null without ending any session, so ignoring null is correct.
  • RestoreCredentials.clear() catches everything, so the watcher can't crash.

None of the three inline comments block merging. The expiry one is the one I'd most like an answer on.

This fires on any loss of an active or pending session, including a session that expires or is revoked from the dashboard. In clerk-android 1.3.0, native only clears the key on an explicit sign-out (SignOutService.signOut() and Auth.signOut(sessionId)). Expiry leaves the key in place.

That difference affects the case Restore Credentials exists for. Picture a user whose session timed out and who moves to a new phone before signing back in on the old one. Their key would still have restored them on the new phone. With this watcher, opening the app once after expiry deletes the key on this device and in the cloud backup. I got this from reading the code and haven't run it on a device.

Is the broader behavior intended? If not, one option is to clear only when the ended session's status is ENDED/REMOVED (or it disappears outright) and skip EXPIRED.

Minor edge case. When JS calls setDeviceToken with a token that points at a different client, clerk-android 1.3.0 runs resetClientStateForDeviceTokenChange() (ConfigurationManager.kt:425). That emits an empty Client() before the refresh. This helper reads that as every session ending, so the key is cleared even if the refreshed client has the same user signed in.

I think this is rare on mobile because JS and native normally share one client, but I haven't confirmed it. If it's expected, it might be worth a test case so the behavior is pinned down.

Because this sits under enableRestoreCredentials, it reads as if the clear only happens when the prop is on. The clientFlow watcher actually runs in every Android app that uses this package, whatever the prop is set to. That matches native, and clearing a key that doesn't exist does nothing, so the behavior is fine. The changeset already words it correctly. Maybe reword this to something like "On Android, the device's restore credential is deleted whenever a signed-in session ends, whether or not this prop is set."
