fix(ui): share one process-wide TelemetryCollector - #1000
Conversation
Fails on main: each TelemetryProvider composition builds its own TelemetryCollector, so siblings, nested providers, and a provider that leaves and re-enters composition each get a new instance. Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
rememberTelemetryCollector() built a new collector per TelemetryProvider composition. Each one owns an OkHttp-backed HttpClient, a CoroutineScope(SupervisorJob()) running an endless flush loop, and a throttler, and nothing ever closes them. Opening AuthView, UserButton, UserProfileView, or an organization component repeatedly accumulated one of each per entry. TelemetryProvider now provides a single lazily created collector, so siblings, nested providers, and re-entering providers all share it. The unused telemetryCollector parameter is removed. Clerkre-initialization, and tests cannot reset it.
SharedTelemetryCollectorcreates the collector once and never replaces it.ClerkTelemetryEnvironment()readsClerk.version,Clerk.instanceEnvironmentType,Clerk.telemetryEnabled, andClerk.publishableKeylazily through lambdas. The environment therefore follows laterClerkstate, so a stale configuration is not a problem. ThesdkVersionvalue is captured at creation. That value is stable per process, so this is acceptable. The singleton has no reset hook. Tests that exercise
TelemetryProvidershare one collector for the whole JVM. Robolectric can run many test classes in one JVM, so the first test to render a provider starts the 30-second flush loop. That loop is never cancelled. This will not break the current tests. Add aninternalreset function if future tests need isolation. Do not add it now unless a test needs it.🤖 Prompt for AI Agents

19-48: 📐 Maintainability & Code Quality | 🔵 Trivial | 💤 Low valueTests depend on shared global singleton state, so they cannot prove that the first call creates the collector.
Both tests assert that the collected instances are identical. They pass even if an earlier test in the same JVM already created the collector. This is correct for the identity checks. However, the tests do not isolate state, and they are order-independent only because each one asserts relative identity.
The
providerReenteringCompositionReusesCollectortest is the only case that exercises the re-entry path. Neither test compares the collector with one created by an earlier composition. A regression that creates a new collector per process, but one per test class, would still pass. Consider a test that reads the collector from a separatecomposeTestRule.setContentcall. Add a reset hook onSharedTelemetryCollectorif strict isolation is required.🤖 Prompt for AI Agents

The existing cases all compose inside one Activity, so a collector cached per Context would pass them while still leaking on every rotation or new auth Activity. With a per-Context cache swapped in, only this case fails. Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>

The singleton fixes the collector, HttpClient and flush-loop leak, and the environment reads Clerk state lazily, so it never goes stale. I've replied to the nitpicks above. LGTM.
Summary
rememberTelemetryCollector()built a newTelemetryCollectorevery time aTelemetryProviderentered composition. Eight call sites do that:AuthView(viaAuthStateProvider),UserButton,UserProfileView,OrganizationSwitcher(three),OrganizationProfileView, andOrganizationListView. Each collector owns an OkHttp-backed KtorHttpClient, aCoroutineScope(SupervisorJob())that runs a 30-second flush loop forever, and a throttler. Nothing closes any of them. So each time an app opens one of these views, it keeps one more client and one more loop until the process dies.TelemetryProvidernow provides one process-wide collector, created the first time a provider composes. Sibling providers, nested providers, and a provider that leaves and re-enters composition all get the same instance. That means oneHttpClient, one scope, and one flush loop per process. ThetelemetryCollectorparameter had no callers, so this PR removes it.I did not choose either of these alternatives:
LocalTelemetryCollector. Sibling views and a view that closes and reopens have no parent provider, and those cases cause the growth.DisposableEffect. That would drop buffered events and rebuild a client on every entry.Testing
TelemetryProviderTestreadsLocalTelemetryCollector.currentfrom sibling and nested providers, and from a provider that leaves and re-enters composition. On main, both cases fail withexpected:<1> but was:<2>distinct collectors. With the fix, both pass.Context, the first two cases would still pass but each rotation or new auth Activity would leak. With a per-Contextcache swapped in, only this case fails../gradlew :source:ui:testDebugUnitTest :source:ui:spotlessCheck :source:ui:detektpasses on JDK 21 (507 tests, 0 failures). With this branch merged with fix(telemetry): record development instances only, skip in debug mode #999,:source:telemetry:testAndroidHostTestalso passes (9 tests, 0 failures). Not in this PR
The shared collector still wakes every 30 seconds to check an empty buffer. After #999 that happens in production apps too, where the collector never records anything. clerk-js schedules a flush only when it buffers an event, and doing the same here would remove the idle wakeups. I left it out to keep this PR to the leak.
