What this does

Follow-up to the Jev grader's report on app/controllers/inspections_controller.rb — the biggest controller in app (565 lines), graded 55/D with thin-controller, idiomatic-Rails and Sorbet warnings. Same behaviour, better homes:

  • InspectionPrefillService (new, # typed: strict) — owns which fields prefill from the previous inspection and the translated prefill-notice labels, plus the tab→assessment mapping and the excluded-fields list. The controller keeps only the ivars its views read (@previous_inspection, @prefilled_fields). One latent bug fixed on the move: a blank tab param looked labels up in the nonexistent forms..fields namespace; it now resolves like the helper's current_tab (params[:tab].presence || :inspection).
  • Inspection.partition_for_index — the index page's drafts-oldest-first / completed-newest-first ordering moves into the model, with an ordering-invariant spec.
  • InspectionsHelper#inspections_index_title — title building leaves the controller, and an unknown ?result= value now gets the plain title instead of putting raw request input in the page (filter_by_result ignores unknown values, so the query already showed everything).
  • ApplicationController#deliver_cached_pdf / #send_qr_code — the measure→fetch→respond PDF scaffolding and the QR send_data block were duplicated between the inspections and units controllers; both now share them. Units' QR filename was a hardcoded "{serial}_QR.png"; it now uses I18n (units.export.qr_filename).
  • Visibility — inspection_params, handle_successful_unit_update and handle_failed_unit_update are private; the stray extend T::Sig is gone (its only sig moved into the strict service).

Controller is 565 → 468 lines; re-grading it moves Sorbet sigs to PASS (0.40 → 0.80) and the extracted service grades 81/B.

Testing

  • 267 examples green across the touched surface: model, request (inspections, units, PDF/QR endpoints, CSV completeness), controller-turbo, and the index/CSV/prefill feature specs; smoke re-run on this branch's base (137 examples), plus a focused spec pinning the unknown-result title behaviour.
  • standardrb clean on all changed files; bin/check-sorbet-changes --all passes.
  • srb tc cannot run on the maintainer's NixOS checkout (sorbet-static ships a dynamically linked binary); full static typechecking lands separately in Add a Sorbet type check to CI #573, which also gates it in CI.

- Extract prefill field selection and label translation to
InspectionPrefillService (typed: strict); drop the controller's stray
extend T::Sig now that its only sig moved with the code. Empty tab
params now resolve labels from forms.inspection instead of a broken
  forms..fields lookup
- Move index partitioning to Inspection.partition_for_index and the
  filtered-title building to InspectionsHelper
- Share PDF/QR delivery scaffolding via ApplicationController
(deliver_cached_pdf, send_qr_code); units' QR filename now comes from
I18n instead of a hardcoded string
- Make inspection_params and the unit update handlers private

📝 Walkthrough

Walkthrough

Inspection index handling, prefill selection, and PDF and QR delivery are reorganized across controllers, models, helpers, and a service. A Sorbet error-count check is added to CI, with a baseline of 922 and supporting type declarations.

Changes

Inspection and Export Updates

Layer / File(s) Summary
Inspection index and controller organization
app/models/inspection.rb, app/helpers/inspections_helper.rb, app/controllers/inspections_controller.rb, spec/models/inspection_spec.rb, spec/requests/inspections/inspections_spec.rb
The model partitions drafts oldest-first and completed inspections newest-first. The helper builds index titles, and the controller uses both. Unit-update handlers move into the private section. Specs cover partition order and the title for an unrecognized result filter.
Prefill selection and controller delegation
app/services/inspection_prefill_service.rb, app/controllers/inspections_controller.rb
InspectionPrefillService selects eligible fields and builds translated labels. The controller delegates prefill label calculation to the service.
Shared PDF and QR delivery
app/controllers/application_controller.rb, app/controllers/inspections_controller.rb, app/controllers/units_controller.rb, config/locales/units.en.yml
ApplicationController adds shared PDF response handling and inline QR PNG delivery. The inspection and unit controllers use these methods. The unit QR filename uses a locale template.

Sorbet CI Check

Layer / File(s) Summary
Sorbet configuration and type declarations
sorbet/config, sorbet/rbi/manual/*
The Sorbet configuration narrows DSL ignores and adds gem-path ignores. Manual RBIs declare Rails, helper, I18n, and Active Support types, including Inspection#id.
Sorbet error-count check and CI integration
bin/check-sorbet-errors, sorbet/error-count-baseline, .github/workflows/sorbet.yml, .github/workflows/status-check.yml, CLAUDE.md
A script checks Sorbet's reported error count against a baseline of 922. A workflow runs the script, and the status workflow tracks its result. The documentation describes the CI check and local commands.

The new type-check workflow can either block a clean check or report success after a fatal checker failure, so its CI signal should be corrected before relying on it.

Stop the edit action after rejecting an unsupported tab.

validate_tab_parameter redirects for an unsupported tab, but edit continues to set_previous_inspection. With a distinct previous inspection, InspectionPrefillService then calls Hash#fetch and can raise KeyError.

A request such as ?result=foo put the raw query value into the page
title; the empty string produced a trailing dash. filter_by_result
ignores unknown values, so the title now only gains a status suffix for
passed and failed, translated through inspections.status.

Parse Sorbet’s zero-error success output as zero errors.

When Sorbet 0.6.13497 completes with no errors, it can output only No errors! Great job.. The parser then leaves count empty and exits 2. The Sorbet workflow runs this checker directly, so a successful zero-error typecheck can fail CI.

Reject fatal Sorbet failures before applying the baseline.

$SORBET_COMMAND can exit nonzero, but || true discards that status. If Sorbet emits Errors: N with N <= 922 before a fatal compiler or infrastructure failure, the checker prints OK and exits successfully. This hides the fatal failure while still allowing ordinary type errors within the baseline.

Preserve the baseline comparison for ordinary type errors, but fail when the Sorbet process reports a fatal failure. Do not discard the command status without classifying it.

Declare number_with_precision in NumberHelper.

ApplicationHelper#format_numeric_value calls number_with_precision for numeric input. The empty NumberHelper RBI is the only available declaration because Sorbet ignores generated action_view RBIs. Sorbet can report this call as undefined.
