Add a Jev code grader for source and spec files - #562
stefan-burke wants to merge 2 commits into
Conversation
`bin/grade-code` scores every Ruby, ERB and JavaScript file under app, spec and lib against the house rules in CLAUDE.md, using one Jev systemone call per file with all applicable questions in that call. There are no mechanical checks: CodeStandardsChecker, standardrb and the custom cops already cover line length, method length and hardcoded strings. What is left is judgement, and that is what the rubric asks Jev about - idiomatic Rails, small single-purpose methods, short comments that explain WHY and carry no history notes, plain technical English, no dead code or defensive fallbacks, I18n for user-facing strings, class-free semantic HTML, the form partial conventions, and for specs: not tautological, succinct names, a clear story and real edge cases. Files are graded one at a time. A single file prints the full per-check report; a batch prints a worst-first table with the most-failed checks across the run, and can write CSV or JSON. Discovery skips vendored and non-source trees (app/assets, *.min.js, the upstream highlight.js). flake.nix declares python3 in the dev shell - it was only present transitively - and the shell banner lists the command.

- Line 756: Update the slug construction in the code using `rel_path` to
lowercase the path before applying the character-filtering regex, so uppercase
letters are retained in normalized form.
- Around line 758-772: In the response grading flow, treat an empty result from
grade_jev_answers as ungradable before calling summarise. Return the existing
error-result shape with score unset, letter "-", and a clear no-usable-answers
error; preserve the current path for non-empty results.
- Around line 534-537: Update the factory_minimal instructions in the criteria
configuration to ask whether factories or test data are over-specified, aligning
the question with the true criterion and invert=True. Keep the existing criteria
labels and scoring behavior unchanged.
Review comments at @flake.nix:
- Line 31: Add the SQLite CLI package to the development shell inputs in
flake.nix alongside the existing tools, so the backup workflow can invoke
sqlite3 in nix develop.

- factory_minimal now asks about over-specification so the question matches its criteria and invert flag; no_css_classes had the mirrored mismatch and now asks about freedom from class attributes - responses with no usable Jev answers return the ungradable error shape instead of a phantom 0/F score - lowercase the path before building the session slug - restore sqlite, which adding python3 dropped from the dev shell, so BackupOperations#sqlite3_backup works in nix develop

What this adds
bin/grade-code— a Jev (TypeSafe System One) grader for the house coding rulesin
CLAUDE.md. It walksapp, specandlib, and grades one file perJev systemone call, with every applicable question asked in that single call.
There are no mechanical checks.
CodeStandardsChecker, standardrb and thecustom cops already cover line length, method length and hardcoded strings —
duplicating them here would just be noise. What is left is judgement, which is
what the rubric asks about.
What it scores
Code — idiomatic Rails · nice simple methods (short, single-purpose,
guard clauses, descriptive names) · comments that explain WHY, not WHAT · short
comments in plain British English · no history notes or stale TODOs · no dead
code or speculative abstraction · no defensive coding or silent fallbacks ·
modern tidy Ruby · descriptive naming · Sorbet sigils · I18n for user-facing
strings.
Kind-specific — thin controller (controllers) · no
class/styleattributes and semantic structure (ERB) ·
form_contextand thei18n_basefield conventions (forms) · progressive enhancement, Turbo-first (JavaScript).
Specs — not tautological (no wiring assertions, mock echoes or
expect(x).to be true) · succinct, specific example names · happy path andedge cases · each test reads as a story · house RSpec DSL · minimal factory
data.
bin/grade-code --list-checksprints the rubric with weights and the kinds eachcheck applies to.
Output
bin/grade-code app/models/inspection.rbbin/grade-codebin/grade-code --csv tmp/grades.csvDefaults to
--workers 1(one file at a time);--workers 6runs them inparallel. Batch mode always exits 0 — it is a report, not a gate.
Calibration
The rubric was calibrated against this codebase before being trusted. A first
pass over all 560 files produced two artefacts that were rubric defects, not
code defects, and both are fixed:
comments at all — the question had no vacuous-pass clause. It now judges only
the comments that exist: 4/8/51 → 38/20/5 pass/warn/fail on a 63-file
stratified sample.
snake_casefrom JavaScript files. Reworded tobe language-aware: 7/49/7 → 61/2/0.
could partly satisfy it and 105 of 122 views failed. Split into
no_css_classesandsemantic_structure.factory_minimalasked "do the factoriesstay minimal?" while its
truecriterion described over-specification, sowith
invert=Truea minimal file could grade FAIL; it now asks aboutover-specification.
no_css_classeshad the mirrored mismatch (bad-statequestion, good-state
truecriterion, no invert) and now asks "Is thistemplate free of
classandstyleattributes?". Both confirmed liveagainst
jev-1.13. The scan numbers below predate this wording change.app/javascript/highlight.jsis the vendored Highlight.js distribution and isskipped alongside
*.min.js.First full scan
560 files, 80s at
--workers 6, no errors. Mean 72.4, median 73:A:8 B:240 C:249 D:61 F:2.
The themes worth attacking, by files with a FAIL:
# Verify we're on the right tabnarration).class=attributes, which is mechanical andbin/lintterritory.shared/_image_link.html.erbrenders a hardcoded
"Invalid image file", andapp/models/unit.rb:120returns
"Passed"/"Failed".safety_standards_tabs.jsis the onlyremaining F.
Modern, tidy Rubywarns on 262 of 560 files: the codebase broadly predatesthe house syntax rules, so that one is a sweep rather than a fix.
Other changes
flake.nix— declarespython3in the dev shell (it was only presenttransitively, which made the tool's availability accidental) and lists
grade-codein the shell banner. A review catch: that edit accidentallydropped
sqlite, whichBackupOperations#sqlite3_backupneeds for thesqlite3CLI — restored.CLAUDE.md— a short "Code Quality Grading" section documenting the tool.Testing
Verified end to end against the live
jev-1.13endpoint: single file, batch at--workers 6, JSON, CSV, ungradable target, and the conditional checks firingonly on files that contain forms. Discovery was checked against the real tree
(560 gradable files, correct kind for each, config/migrations/vendored excluded).
Re-verified after the review fixes: mocked responses with no usable answers
return the ungradable shape instead of a phantom 0/F; the session slug stays
distinct for case-differing paths; and live runs confirm the corrected check
polarity (
factory_minimalPASSes a minimal-factory spec atnoul=0.16inverted,
no_css_classesFAILs a class-carrying view atnoul=0.01).Notes
pre-commit hook ignores this file (it only inspects
.rb,.erband.js).OPENCODE_API_KEY(or/run/secrets/opencode_api_key, or.env).member, so there is nothing to run against this file. It follows the same
80-column, no-defensive-code conventions the rest of the repo does.
