boxel-design references: style-families, untrusted-content, signature-treatments (ECO-605) - #209
Conversation
…ferences to boxel-design Split out of the design pipeline PR (#151). Links to design-review and check-palette.mjs, which are not on main yet, are removed. Co-Authored-By: Claude Sonnet 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>

…research and cross-build rules untrusted-content no longer licenses invented prices or restates the image-host list, the Openverse link points at sample-images, critical-rules lets a style family earn more colours or heavy weights, style-families research follows the opt-in rule, a user-named reference is exempt from the two-reference rule, and cross-build checks are scoped to one task. [Claude Code 🤖] Lens: whether the three references agree with the guidance and the files they name, checked by reading each one whole and verifying the cross-references (tool names, API names, links, quoted text); I did not judge the design merits of the eight families or the treatment list, and nothing was rendered or run with a real model.
One blocking issue: the design playbook's Stage 1 rules still require the restrained-editorial look for every card, and nothing routes builders to style-families.md. Five non-blocking fixes: references to steps and reviews that are not on main, an undefined term, an unowned allowlist, a rule that contradicts itself for user-named references, and history-style wording.
- (blocking) Make the playbook and
container-query-fitted-layout.mddefer to the declared family and point Stage 1 atstyle-families.md; see the thread on Choose the family. - (non-blocking) Remove references to steps, a score and a review that are not on
main; see the thread on the opening ofsignature-treatments.md. - (non-blocking) Define or replace
L3; see its thread. - (non-blocking) Decide whether a user-named reference overrides the swap test; see the thread in
untrusted-content.md. - (non-blocking) The hotlink allowlist has no owner; see the second thread in
untrusted-content.md. - (non-blocking) Rewrite the history-style wording as present-tense contract; see the thread on the opening of
style-families.md.
…rules Playbook Stage 1 declares the family first; the playbook and container-query weight and accent rules defer to it. SKILL.md gains one precedence block. Remove references to steps and reviews that are not on main, define the arresting-thing term, keep the swap test for user-named references, drop the unowned hotlink allowlist claim, and state history-style wording as present-tense rules. Playful pop labels stay heavy (600+) with modest tracking; when more than one family fits, the brief's first promise picks the lead family. Co-Authored-By: Claude Sonnet 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
A named reference decides family, mood and which sections show; section order still follows the visitor's first question. Precedence tier 1 names the swap test. Co-Authored-By: Claude Sonnet 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
Stage 1 no longer declares a family. After the first mockup, check it once against the default look (large light serif, small bold sans labels, one accent, cream ground); keeping it needs quoted brief words that ask for it, otherwise re-derive from the brief and redo once. style-families.md is optional vocabulary with no precedence. Adds a Playful pop label check and a tie-break for briefs that fit more than one family. Co-Authored-By: Claude Sonnet 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
Closes ECO-605.
Background and Goal
Without guidance, boxel-design builds drift to the same restrained editorial look, take whatever text research returns as instructions, and have no shared idea of what makes a card memorable. This PR adds three standalone references to
boxel-designthat address those three gaps, so each can be reviewed and tested on its own:Where to start
skills/boxel-design/references/untrusted-content.mdfirst: it sets the rules the other two lean on for research steps.style-families.md(including the page-colour table) andsignature-treatments.md.skills/boxel-design/SKILL.md, three entries inskills/glossary.md, and the matching wording inskills/boxel/references/design-playbook.md.Key decisions and non-obvious mechanics
style-families.mdis optional vocabulary, not a menu: no step requires reading it, nothing is declared from it, and it has no precedence. This keeps the removed-menu rule inSKILL.mdunchanged.SKILL.md. Keeping that look requires quoting brief words that ask for it ("calm" or "gentle" alone do not). Otherwise the builder re-derives from the brief and redoes the mockup once, without swapping in another look from a list.container-query-fitted-layout.mdandcritical-rules.mdsay the brief overrides their weight and accent defaults; their Restrained editorial numbers stay as that look's rule.sample-images.md.SKILL.mdPrecedence names it in the never-overridden tier.style-families.mdalso gives Playful pop a label check (heavy, 600+, tracking tight to modest) and a tie-break for when the brief fits more than one family: the brief's first promise decides, not its audience.skills/glossary.mdkeeps these three entries alongside the Look check entry, which is edited by other open PRs.🤖 Generated with Claude Code
