fix(analytics): ask for notifications on intent and fix misreported events - #1226
Notifications are asked for only from a show's bell and the import card, not on every Home visit.
The review prompt counts episodes finished in boxlore on this install, asks once per milestone, and waits two days after installing or importing a library.
Analytics fixes: phone plays no longer counted as Android Auto plays, Explore impressions split from taps, prompts no longer start the NPS survey, set-once person properties that actually set, and media extras kept out of playback events.
Motivation
Home asked for notification permission on every visit until the listener answered.
The review prompt counted marked-played and restored episodes, so a restore or import could fire it right away, and a used milestone came back 30 days later.
PostHog numbers were wrong in several places:
2,761 phone plays in 14 days were labelled android_auto_*. Media3 sends the app's own setMediaItems through onAddMediaItems, which overwrote the app's entry point.
94% of explore_recommendation_tapped rows were impressions.
Review prompts sent feedback_submitted, which also made people eligible for the NPS survey.
install_channel never existed on any person: it was sent nested as $set_once under $set, so PostHog stored one property literally named $set_once.
Playback events carried media item extras (artwork URL lists, Android Auto keys).
Every new episode or mix counted as the listener clearing the queue.
Settings reported a change on every tap, even when nothing changed.
What changed
Notifications (:app, :feature:info): the Home permission request is removed. Both permission events carry surface (show_bell, library_import).
Review prompt:
:core:prefs keeps review_milestone_consumed and library_imported_at, and checks a 2-day quiet period from Android's install time and the last import. review_first_launch_at is no longer read.
:feature:home counts only rows finished since install (finishedAt) and records the prompt only once its sheet is on screen with Home resumed (ReviewPromptRecorder).
A pending milestone follows the count, so one restored from a backup with no listening behind it is dropped. An install prompted before this update counts milestone 5 (or the one it has reached) as used.
The quiet days also start when an import begins and on a phone's first sync for an account (onFirstAccountPull).
:core:catalog applies the quiet days to the promoter hand-off too.
Feedback events:
feedback_submitted is now only the survey trigger.
New engagement_prompt_shown, store_review_opened (in-app review and every store-page button) and feedback_sent (categories only).
The survey's own "shown" is no longer sent twice.
Milestones:
first_episode_played is claimed once per install from the player (FirstPlayClaim), with the episode and show, in a prefs file left out of backups. The claim is taken when a listen starts, in start order. The first launch notes whether the install came from an older build, so a restored phone updated before its first listen still sends it.
The setup route keeps first_onboarding_method, first_user_intent and initial_podcasts_subscribed as set-once properties.
New AnalyticsEmit.personSetOnce uses the SDK's set-once slot. Play's (not set) referrer is now unknown, not utm.
Explore: new explore_surface_impression. Home's category chips are now home_surface_tapped.
Queue: a clear is reported only when the listener chose it (the Lore conflict dialog). Batch adds send one event with items_count.
Playback events:
EntryPointContext.ALLOWED_KEYS is the only context allowed onto them, and context never replaces a field the event already set.
labelCarPlay names android_auto_* only for Android Auto's controller.
queue_auto_advance, queue_skip and library_latest_episodes are now canonical entry points. Auto-advance and skips report them even when the queue's items carry the surface that started it, which becomes source_entry_point.
explore_recommendation_tapped now carries recipe_id beside episode_id.
Echo chat: typed text is capped at 500 characters at the analytics boundary, and the reply text is no longer sent.
Settings:
settings_interaction is sent only when a value changes.
New per-control keys for Smart Downloads (smart_downloads_*), automatic downloads (auto_download_*) and Player appearance (mini_player_seek_buttons_toggled, full_player_style_changed).
In-app alerts: the announcement events carry announcement_id, title and presentation, and has_action matches the buttons the alert draws. The Android Auto overlay's Continue now sends dismissed.
Docs: glossary CSV and Markdown, the coverage list, module READMEs and the listener notes.
Style: ktlint fixes in files outside this change (:app and :core:playback tests, :core:database, :core:rss), so ktlintCheck passes on every module.
Behavior & compatibility
Listener-visible: fewer notification prompts and fewer, later review prompts. The NPS survey's 3-episode threshold uses the same count (finished in boxlore since install). Nothing else on screen changes.
Analytics compatibility:
Charts on feedback_submitted prompts, Explore taps, queue_modified clears or android_auto_* entry points will shift on this release.
Persons from earlier builds keep the nested $set_once property.
install_channel fills in for new installs only.
Storage: new keys review_milestone_consumed and library_imported_at in user_preferences, and a new prefs file boxlore_install_milestones (excluded from backup and device transfer). No existing name changes.
Updates: an install updated from an older build that already logged its first play won't send first_episode_played again.
Adaptive: no layout changes. The prompt and setting logic is unchanged on tablet, foldable and resized windows, and nothing new is held in composition. Not checked on a device.
