CPUWIN is a status bar application that provides real-time CPU monitoring and process management capabilities. The application runs invisibly in the background, displaying CPU usage in the menu bar and providing detailed process information through an interactive menu system.
End User Scenario:
- Monitor system performance during intensive tasks
- Identify resource-hungry applications
- Terminate unresponsive processes safely
System Administrator Scenario:
- Monitor server performance
- Manage background processes
- Troubleshoot system performance issues
- Platform: macOS 12.0 or later
- System Resources: Minimal (typically < 10MB RAM, < 1% CPU)
- Network: Local system monitoring only
- Security: Requires system permissions for process monitoring
- Operating System: macOS 12.0 or later
- Processor: Any Intel or Apple Silicon Mac
- Memory: 512MB RAM minimum, 1GB recommended
- Storage: 50MB free disk space
- Permissions: Administrative access for installation
Procedure: Install CPUWIN
Purpose: Install and configure CPUWIN for first-time use.
Preconditions:
- Administrative privileges on the macOS system
- Internet connection for repository cloning
- Swift development tools installed (optional, for source builds)
Steps:
-
Clone the repository:
git clone https://github.com/yourusername/cpuwin.git cd cpuwin -
Build the application:
swift build -c release
-
Launch CPUWIN:
./cpuwin_profiling
Post-conditions:
- CPUWIN appears in the menu bar as a CPU percentage
- Application is ready for monitoring operations
Result: CPUWIN is installed and operational.
No additional configuration is required. The application uses default settings optimized for most use cases.
Purpose: View real-time CPU usage and system performance metrics.
Preconditions:
- CPUWIN is running and visible in the menu bar
- System is operational
Steps:
- Locate CPUWIN in the menu bar (shows current CPU percentage)
- Click the CPUWIN icon to open the monitoring menu
- Review CPU Usage in the top section of the menu
- Scroll through process lists to view detailed information
Result: Current system performance data is displayed.
Purpose: View process details and safely terminate problematic processes.
Preconditions:
- CPUWIN is running
- Administrative privileges (for process termination)
Steps:
- Open CPUWIN menu from the menu bar
- Locate the target process in the process lists
- Right-click the process name to open context menu
- Select "Information" to view detailed process data
- For termination, select "Terminate (SIGTERM)" or "Force Kill (SIGKILL)" as appropriate
Result: Process is terminated or detailed information is displayed.
Purpose: Manually update process monitoring data.
Preconditions:
- CPUWIN is running
Steps:
- Open CPUWIN menu from the menu bar
- Press ⌘R or select "Refresh" from the menu
Result: Process data is updated with current system state.
Issue: CPUWIN does not appear in menu bar after launch Symptoms: Application starts but no menu bar icon visible Resolution:
- Check System Settings > General > Login Items
- Ensure CPUWIN is not blocked by security software
- Restart the application
Issue: Process termination fails Symptoms: "Permission denied" or process remains running Resolution:
- Ensure you have administrative privileges
- Try "Force Kill (SIGKILL -9)" for unresponsive processes
- Check if process is protected by the system
Issue: High CPU usage reported by CPUWIN itself Symptoms: CPUWIN shows elevated CPU usage Resolution:
- This is normal during active monitoring
- CPU usage should return to normal when menu is closed
- Consider adjusting update intervals if needed
Issue: Application fails to start Symptoms: Error messages during launch Resolution:
- Verify macOS version compatibility (12.0+)
- Check system permissions for process monitoring
- Ensure no conflicting monitoring software is running
"Permission denied for process monitoring"
- Cause: Insufficient system permissions
- Resolution: Grant necessary permissions in System Settings > Privacy & Security
"Unable to terminate process"
- Cause: Process protected by system or insufficient privileges
- Resolution: Use administrator account or contact system administrator
- GitHub Issues: Report bugs and request features
- Documentation: This user guide
- Community: Check existing issues for similar problems
Uninstallation should be performed when:
- CPUWIN is no longer needed
- System cleanup is required
- Reinstallation is planned
Procedure: Remove CPUWIN
Purpose: Completely remove CPUWIN from the system.
Preconditions:
- Administrative privileges
- CPUWIN is not currently running
Steps:
- Terminate CPUWIN if running (⌘Q or force quit)
- Navigate to the installation directory:
cd /path/to/cpuwin - Remove build artifacts:
rm -rf .build/
- Remove source code (optional):
cd .. rm -rf cpuwin/ - Check for running processes:
pgrep -f cpuwin
- Force terminate any remaining processes (if found):
pkill -9 -f cpuwin
Post-conditions:
- CPUWIN is completely removed from the system
- No residual processes or files remain
Data Backup: No user data is stored by CPUWIN, so no backup is required.
Result: CPUWIN is successfully uninstalled.
CPU (Central Processing Unit): The primary processor of a computer system that executes instructions.
PID (Process ID): A unique numerical identifier assigned to each running process.
SIGTERM: A Unix signal that requests a process to terminate gracefully.
SIGKILL: A Unix signal that forces immediate process termination without cleanup.
Process Tree: A hierarchical structure showing parent-child relationships between processes.
Status Bar: The area at the top of the macOS screen showing system information and application icons.
