How does Siddha medicine work?
Siddha, the Tamil system of medicine, reads the pulse for three humours, drops sesame oil on urine and fires minerals at 800 °C. See how it works in its own terms, then what fair tests and lab safety checks actually show.

- The Tamil system of medicine. Siddha grew up in the Tamil country, written in Tamil verse on palm leaves and credited to 18 Siddhars led by Agathiyar. Today it is an official Ayush system with a BSMS degree, the National Institute of Siddha in Chennai (2005) and its own research council, CCRS (2010).
- Elements, humours and tastes. As Siddha describes it, five elements act in the body as three humours, vatham, pitham and kabam, in a ratio of 1 : ½ : ¼. It counts 96 principles and seven body constituents, and says each of the six tastes raises or calms the humours, so diet comes first. It shares these roots with Ayurveda but differs in texts and methods.
- The eight-fold examination. A Siddha physician reads the pulse with three fingers, then touch, tongue, colour, voice, eyes, stools and urine. In nei kuri a drop of sesame oil on urine is read as a snake, ring or pearl. Therapies include varmam pressure points, thokkanam massage and kayakalpam rejuvenation.
- Plants, minerals and metals. Siddha is known for mineral and metal medicines. The texts describe purification, grinding with herbal juices and firing in a pudam, which measured about 800 °C. Nilavembu kudineer, a nine-herb decoction, was handed out in Tamil Nadu during dengue and COVID-19 outbreaks.
- What the evidence says. Most fevers get better on their own, so only randomised, blinded trials can show a remedy works. Siddha trials are mostly small; a few are promising but need larger, independent tests. Some metal-based products have caused mercury, lead and arsenic poisoning. India regulates Siddha medicines under the Drugs and Cosmetics Act.
- Using it wisely. Never stop prescribed medicines, tell every doctor what you take, and see a qualified doctor for serious illness. Siddha's balanced banana-leaf meal overlaps with India's own nutrition guidelines, and Siddha remains a treasured part of Tamil heritage.
