GreenMix Addis is a cradle-to-gate Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) and logistics analytics dashboard for concrete production in Addis Ababa. The application combines material-impact calculations with machine learning to compare concrete mix options and assess embodied carbon and transportation impacts.
Conventional concrete production can have a significant environmental impact, particularly from cement production, virgin aggregate use, and material transportation. In a rapidly growing city such as Addis Ababa, engineers and project managers need practical tools to understand these impacts and compare lower-carbon alternatives during the mix design stage.
GreenMix Addis provides an interactive dashboard for estimating cradle-to-gate embodied carbon and material quantities per cubic metre of concrete. Users can adjust material substitutions, including Rice Husk Ash (RHA) for cement and Recycled Coarse Aggregate (RCA) for virgin aggregate, and compare their potential effects on embodied carbon and transportation impacts.
Machine learning and SHAP explainability are also used to explore relationships between mix characteristics and predicted outcomes, providing additional insight into data-driven concrete decisions.
- Dashboard & UI: Streamlit
- Data Processing & Analysis: Python, Pandas, NumPy
- Machine Learning: Scikit-learn, Joblib (Random Forest Regressor)
- Explainable AI: SHAP
- Data Visualization: Matplotlib, Seaborn
- Explore RHA Substitution: Evaluate RHA replacement levels around 10–15% as potential lower-carbon alternatives to conventional cement content.
- Use Recycled Aggregates: Consider RCA substitution, including levels up to 50%, where material quality and structural requirements permit.
- Reduce Transport Impacts: Source materials closer to construction sites where feasible to reduce transportation-related emissions.
