Implements RTS4b from spec 6.3.0 (ably/specification#557). Calling Channels.Release(name) or Channels.ReleaseAll() on a realtime channel that isn't Initialized, Detached or Failed still detaches it and removes it once the detach completes. It now also logs a deprecation warning, because in the next major version this will throw error 90011. Users should call channel.Detach() (or DetachAsync()) and wait for it to complete before releasing.

  • Warning is logged at warning level with the method name and the channel's current state.
  • Release docstring notes the deprecation.
  • Unit tests: a warning is logged for an attached channel, and no warning is logged (and the channel is removed) for a detached one.

The next-major change is in #1358. Reference ably-js PRs: ably/ably-pubsub-js#2322 (deprecation) and ably/ably-pubsub-js#2323 (next major).

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Bug Fixes
    • Releasing an attached channel now logs a deprecation warning that identifies whether Release() or ReleaseAll() was called. Releasing a detached channel continues without a warning.
  • Deprecations
    • Releasing a channel outside the Initialized, Detached, or Failed states is deprecated and is expected to throw in the next major version.

Walkthrough

When a channel is released outside Initialized, Detached, or Failed, the release code logs a deprecation warning that names the calling API. Tests cover warning behavior and channel removal for Release() and ReleaseAll().

src/IO.Ably.Shared/Realtime/RealtimeChannels.cs, src/IO.Ably.Tests.Shared/Realtime/ChannelsSpecs.cs
Release() passes its API name to a private overload. When immediate release is not allowed, the overload logs a deprecation warning and keeps the existing detach flow. ReleaseAll() passes its API name. Tests check warning behavior for attached and detached channels, including removal from the collection.

Releasing a channel outside the Initialized, Detached, or Failed states now logs a deprecation warning. Release behavior is otherwise unchanged. No merge-blocking risk was identified.

Add a warning assertion for ReleaseAll().

ReleaseAll() passes "Channels.ReleaseAll()" to the shared release path, but the attached-channel warning test covers only Release(). The existing ReleaseAll tests check detach and removal only. Add a focused test for the ReleaseAll() warning text.

🟡 Changes recommended

The ReleaseAll() warning gives misleading migration guidance, and the new tests do not verify warning level or that path’s message.

What changed in this PR

This PR deprecates releasing a realtime channel before it is detached, preparing callers for the next major version’s stricter behavior.

Changes:

  • Log a deprecation warning for releases in non-terminal channel states, including calls through ReleaseAll().
  • Document the deprecation and add warning tests for Release().

Spec 6.3.0 deletes RTS4a, under which Channels.Release() detaches a
channel not already in the Initialized, Detached or Failed state before
removing it, and replaces it with RTS4e, under which Release() raises
error 90011 instead. RTS4b lets SDKs that already implement the old
behaviour keep it until their next major version, provided they log a
deprecation warning when it takes effect. ReleaseAll() goes through the
same path, so it warns too, naming itself.
