- Line 4473: In the asynchronous callback, update the assignment to
capturedOriginalTokenRequest to store tokenRequest directly instead of
force-unwrapping it with try! XCTUnwrap; retain the later XCTUnwrap after
waitUntil so nil results are reported without terminating the test process.

Seventeen tests declared an implicitly unwrapped optional, assigned it only inside a waitUntil closure, and read it after. When the wait times out the value is still nil, and reading it raises a fatal error that kills the whole test process rather than failing one test. That is worse than it sounds. xcodebuild relaunches the runner and resumes from the *next* test, so the crashed test is never retried — a failure that -retry-tests-on-failure would otherwise absorb becomes a red lane, and the tests that happened to be in flight are reported as failures too. A run on #2285 lost RealtimeClientConnectionTests.test__085 and three unrelated tests to a single timeout this way. Each site now captures into a plain optional and binds the original name with XCTUnwrap after the wait, so the code below is unchanged. A timeout becomes an ordinary, retryable failure. Three force unwraps inside the callbacks go with them, since each could kill the process the same way: an implicitly unwrapped createRecoveryKey() result and a try! in the recovery test, and a try! XCTUnwrap on the token request in AuthTests. The callbacks now assign whatever they were given and let the XCTUnwrap after the wait report a nil.

Seventeen tests in
Test/AblyTestsdeclared an implicitly unwrapped optional, assigned it only inside awaitUntilclosure, and read it afterwards. When the wait times out the value is still nil, and reading it raises a fatal error — which kills the whole test process, not one test. Why that costs more than one failure
xcodebuild relaunches the runner after a crash and resumes from the next test. The crashed test is never re-run, so
-retry-tests-on-failurecannot absorb it, and whatever else was in flight gets reported as failed too.A run on #2285 shows it exactly. At 22:24:34,
RealtimeClientConnectionTests.test__085hitFatal error: Unexpectedly found nil while implicitly unwrapping an Optional valueat line 3547. The runner came back at 22:24:59 and carried on fromtest__086.test__085appears nowhere else in the log — no✔, no retry. Three unrelated tests inRealtimeAnnotationsTestsandRealtimeClientPresenceTestswere also listed as failures; all three were retried and passed. One timeout, one red lane. The change
Each site captures into a plain optional and rebinds the original name with
XCTUnwrapafter the wait, so every line below is untouched:A timeout now fails that one test, and a failure is something the retries can absorb.
Two force unwraps inside the same recovery test go with them —
client.connection.createRecoveryKey()!becomes aguardthat fails and callsdone(), and atry!becomestry?. Both would crash the process in the same way.Touched:
AuthTests,MessageUpdatesDeletesTests,PluginAPITests,PushTests,RealtimeAnnotationsTests,RealtimeClientConnectionTests,RestAnnotationsTests,RestClientTests.What is deliberately not here
Only sites where the variable is dereferenced after the
waitUntilblock are changed — that is the shape that crashes. Implicitly unwrapped optionals read only inside the closure that sets them are left alone.Verification
swift build --build-testsclean.RealtimeClientConnectionTests/test__085passes, as doRestAnnotationsTests(4),MessageUpdatesDeletesTests(9) andRealtimeAnnotationsTests(8). One test in that last suite failed on a first run withError 80017 - connection broken before receiving publishing acknowledgmentat line 430 — outside the range this PR touches, and it passes on re-run. It is the same test that flaked in the #2285 run above.Summary by CodeRabbit
