Unverified finding
We couldn't verify this from the code. It is shown for review, not as a verified issue.
The size-limit branch discards the promise returned by reader.cancel() without handling rejection. A cancellation failure could surface as an unhandled rejection after the tool reports its size error.
An unhandled rejection may interrupt or destabilize the extension host.
This can occur when: A response exceeds five megabytes and its stream's cancel operation rejects.
Summary
Summary by CodeRabbit
New Features
Added a web-fetching tool that retrieves webpage content for use in tasks. Chat messages show when content is requested or fetched, along with the URL.
Made the web tool available in code and debug modes, with localized labels and status messages across supported languages.
Added a setting to allow web fetches without approval; fetches otherwise request approval.
Safety Improvements
Web requests block internal or private network addresses, validate destinations when following redirects, and reject binary content.
Fetched content is size-limited and marked as untrusted; HTML can be converted to Markdown with a plain-text fallback.
Adds the built-in fetch_web_content tool. It parses tool arguments, validates and fetches web content, converts supported responses, and displays fetch requests and results in chat with localized labels. It also adds a setting to approve web fetches without prompting.
Adds the web tool group and fetch_web_content types, schema, native-tool definition, and registration. Adds web labels to built-in modes and prompt translations.
Parses complete and streamed arguments and dispatches the tool. Validates destinations and redirects, applies time and size limits, handles textual response types, converts HTML, and wraps fetched content in a neutralized boundary. Tests cover parsing, fetching, safety checks, conversion, and limits.
Adds alwaysAllowWebFetch to settings and state. Auto-approval approves fetches only when the setting is true. The settings view and chat dropdown expose the setting.
Chat rendering and localized messages webview-ui/src/components/chat/ChatRow.tsx, webview-ui/src/components/chat/__tests__/ChatRow.fetch-web-content.spec.tsx, webview-ui/src/i18n/locales/*/chat.json
Displays pending and completed fetch messages with an icon and URL. Adds rendering tests and localized message strings.

Merge Risk: Moderate · previous review ef357
Resolve DNS only after approval and enforce its deadline before merging. Fetch cancellation, article extraction, and completion reporting also need correction. The earlier private-address and connection-cleanup concerns are addressed.
Security Architecture Review
Security architecture risk:🟠 High · up to f1186
The new web-fetch capability has two weaknesses that can allow approved requests to reach local or private services accessible from the machine running the assistant. Approval and response limits reduce exposure, but do not reliably enforce the intended network boundary.
Retained concerns
High · security · observed: The new internal-address classifier recognizes IPv4-mapped IPv6 only in dotted-decimal notation. Canonical hexadecimal forms such as ::ffff:7f00:1 are not classified as internal. An approved model-selected URL or attacker-controlled redirect can therefore cross the intended public-web boundary and target internal IPv4 services through mapped IPv6 addressing.
High · security · observed: The safety check validates DNS answers, but fetch receives the hostname URL without a validated-address binding. An attacker-controlled hostname can resolve publicly during validation and internally during connection establishment. Approval and repeated redirect checks do not preserve destination identity across these separate resolutions.
Medium · security · inferred: Redirect responses and early exits for HTTP errors or unsupported content are not explicitly consumed or cancelled. The finalizer clears the abort timer without aborting those responses. An attacker-controlled server can consequently leave response resources outside the intended operation lifetime; the duration and magnitude depend on runtime connection reclamation, which was not established.
Security review details
Security Blast Radius
inferred — The independently attackable scope is the network environment reachable from the host executing an approved fetch. A model-influenced URL or attacker-controlled redirect can expose local, private, or link-local HTTP services when destination controls are bypassed, and accepted textual responses can enter assistant context. Availability of cloud credentials, access to other users' environments, and broader service compromise remain unproven.
Security Findings and Attack Paths
observed — The retained mapped-IPv6 SSRF finding is supported by the dotted-decimal-only classifier. Canonical verification reports that URL parsing produces hexadecimal mapped literals and Node lookup preserves them, defeating the strongest counterargument that the subsequent DNS check would normalize them into a rejected representation. The affected implementation is new in this PR.
observed — The retained DNS-rebinding finding is supported by a lookup-then-fetch sequence with no validated-address connection binding. An attacker needs influence over a fetched hostname's resolution and an approved execution; changing resolution between validation and connection can redirect the new capability into the host's internal network. Rechecking redirect hostnames does not eliminate the same identity gap at each hop.
Trust Boundaries and Controls
observed — Mode authorization and complete-call validation constrain tool availability, and the fetch handler requires a successful approval callback before retrieval. Standard read/write automatic-approval categories do not include fetchWebContent. Nevertheless, the shared ask flow can answer tool asks affirmatively using queued user messages, so callback approval alone does not establish a fresh URL-specific click.
observed — The fetched body is labeled third-party data in assistant context, and embedded untrusted-content closing markers are neutralized. The inspected chat status contract carries URL/status rather than the fetched body. These are useful presentation controls, but the text marker is not an execution sandbox or a guarantee against instruction influence.
Resilience and Maintainability Implications
inferred — Per-call state and active-response limits reduce cross-call interference and resource exhaustion during normal retrieval. Failure containment is weaker when responses are abandoned: redirect and rejection paths do not explicitly dispose of their bodies, while finalization removes the deadline. Runtime reclamation and task-interruption integration remain unresolved rather than demonstrated safe.
Hardening Proposals
proposed — Enforce destination policy at connection establishment using validated addresses while preserving the intended hostname for TLS and HTTP identity. Classify binary IP addresses, including embedded IPv4 in mapped IPv6, rather than relying on textual spelling. Apply the same enforcement to every redirect connection.
proposed — Give every response an explicit terminal disposal path, including redirects, rejected content, HTTP errors, and interruption. Preserve cancellation authority until outstanding response resources are closed, and connect operation cancellation to task lifetime rather than only a local timer.

Full details: Linked Issues check
Explanation
Issue #748 requests a built-in fetch_web_content tool. The pull request registers the tool, adds strict url and optional prompt parameters, parses and dispatches native calls, executes HTTP/HTTPS fetches with redirects, timeouts, response limits, content conversion, internal-address protection, and untrusted-content boundaries. It adds auto-approval handling, mode access, UI messages, localization, and automated tests for parsing, execution, safety, redirects, content handling, truncation, approval, and rendering.
Full details: Out of Scope Changes check
Explanation
The reviewed changes support Issue #748. Tool registration, execution, security controls, approval settings, mode access, tests, UI rendering, and localization implement or support the built-in web-content fetch feature. The schema change permits the new web group and does not add unrelated validation behavior.
Full details: Security Boundaries
Explanation
No concrete changed path violates the security boundaries. FetchWebContentTool.execute validates HTTP(S), rejects internal addresses before approval, revalidates every redirect, and sends each request through internalAddressBlockingDispatcher. The dispatcher uses safeLookup, which rejects every internal DNS result and passes the validated address to the socket. The added rebinding test verifies that a public pre-check followed by a loopback connection is blocked and no request reaches the local server. Auto-approval requires the explicit alwaysAllowWebFetch === true setting. Prior failure addressed: The current tool adds safeLookup and an undici Agent dispatcher at FetchWebContentTool.ts:166-195 and uses it for every fetch at lines 670-682. The added test at fetchWebContentTool.spec.ts:2115-2141 verifies DNS rebinding to loopback is blocked before any request.
Full details: Persistence Integrity
Explanation
The new alwaysAllowWebFetch setting uses a non-atomic persistence path. SettingsView.handleSubmit adds it to the bulk updateSettings payload (SettingsView.tsx:384-403). The handler writes each entry separately and awaits each contextProxy.setValue without rollback (webviewMessageHandler.ts:760-871). ContextProxy.updateGlobalState updates stateCache before globalState.update completes (ContextProxy.ts:363-370). If storage fails while saving this setting, the cache can report the new value while persisted storage retains the old value. If another setting fails first, earlier writes remain committed without a partial-failure result. A reload can therefore lose the web-fetch approval state or leave the current session inconsistent with persisted state.
Resolution
Make settings persistence transactional for the new path. Snapshot the previous values and cache state, persist the complete update with rollback of all successful writes and cache entries when any write fails, and report the failure to the webview. For the immediate dropdown path, revert the local toggle when persistence fails or wait for an acknowledgement before keeping the new value.
Full details: Description check
Explanation
The description includes the linked issue, scope, checklist, and a basic test statement. However, the implementation details are too brief, the test procedure only says “Manual testing,” the writing-style and visual-snapshot checklist items are missing, and the documentation section does not explain the required updates.
Resolution
Expand the Description with key implementation details and reviewer risks. Provide repeatable test steps and test environment details. Complete all checklist items, including Writing Style and Visual Snapshot. Explain the required documentation updates or mark them as not required. Add the missing Get in Touch section.
Full details: Regression Evidence
Explanation
Two changed behaviors still lack the required regression evidence. presentAssistantMessage.ts:1078-1085 dispatches completed fetch_web_content calls to fetchWebContentTool.handle, but no presentAssistantMessage test contains fetch_web_content or fetchWebContentTool; the existing tests cover other dispatch paths. ChatRow.tsx:1049-1067 and 1478-1496 add durable ask and completed fetchWebContent UI states. ChatRow.fetch-web-content.spec.tsx checks DOM text and labels only. The diff adds no ChatRow .visual.tsx test or fetch-specific Playwright snapshots, although the repository uses toHaveScreenshot component tests.
Resolution
Add a focused presentAssistantMessage test that supplies a valid fetch_web_content block, mocks fetchWebContentTool.handle, and verifies the block and callbacks reach the handler. Add a Playwright component visual test for both fetchWebContent ask and completed states, and commit the required snapshots for the supported themes.
Full details: Lifecycle Resource Cleanup
Explanation
The changed fetch_web_content path can retain a network request and continue work after task cancellation or disposal. FetchWebContentTool.execute creates a private AbortController and 30-second timer at src/core/tools/FetchWebContentTool.ts:652-655, then passes only controller.signal to fetch and reader.read() at lines 678 and 768. Task.cancelCurrentRequest() aborts only currentRequestAbortController and metadataFetchAbortController (src/core/task/Task.ts:3457-3468), and task disposal calls that method (Task.ts:3655-3661); it cannot abort this private controller. If the user cancels or the task is disposed while the fetch waits or streams, the request and reader can continue until completion or timeout, then the tool can still call task.say and pushToolResult. The finally block only aborts the controller after the operation settles (FetchWebContentTool.ts:868-877), so it does not prevent this lifecycle leak.
Resolution
Connect the fetch to a task-owned cancellation/disposal signal, or add an explicit task cancellation hook that aborts this tool's controller immediately. Keep the deadline timer separate from task cancellation. Cancel the active response reader on abort or error. Remove cancellation listeners and clear the timer in finally. Suppress result and UI callbacks after task cancellation or disposal.

@p12tic The PR description image shows the Zoo Code UI. At the top, there’s a user prompt: “Please fetch bbc.com and tell me what news are there”. Below that, the interface shows an “API Request” section, then a message from Zoo: “No skills apply to this request — it's a simple web content fetch task.” A second section says “Zoo wants to fetch web content” and displays the URL https://www.bbc.com. Lower down, a green “Task Completed” status appears with returned content headed “Here are the current top news stories from BBC.com (June 27, 2026):”. Visible headlines include “Venezuela Earthquake Death Toll Tops 1,400”, “US Strikes Iran After Attack on Cargo Ship”, “Burkina Faso Severs Diplomatic Ties with France”, “Meloni and Trump: A Very Public Fall-Out”, and “Europe's Deadly Heatwave Breaks German Record”.
I’ll review the PR now.

So in reviewing this I noticed a couple implementation/security details we should consider, but I also just realized - how is this feature any different than asking the agent to just curl a website?
I wonder if instead this feature should be more stand alone, and a type of structured web parser.
Based on this article: https://mikhail.io/2025/10/claude-code-web-tools/ it seems like Claude fetches a page, converts it to markdown then has a different model go through and parse the contents? I wonder if this feature should be similar to the code embeddings feature where a user can specify a provider and model that will perform a structured parsing of a web fetch?
@edelauna Thanks for quick review. I should've market the PR as RFC, right now it probably used more time than necessary for review, as I just wanted to understand whether this PR makes sense in principle.
So in reviewing this I noticed a couple implementation/security details we should consider, but I also just realized - how is this feature any different than asking the agent to just curl a website?
It also extracts text from the page, so not entirely same as it makes life for the model easier. Important with stupid open-source models. Claude will be able to extract stuff from any format.
Another difference is regarding permissions, it makes sense to allow web fetch to e.g. architect to make better decisions.

Agreed, this makes sense. Would you accept simple web_fetch_content tool as a first step and then add LLM-based parsing on top later. I plan to implement a web search tool as well, so the web access capabilities will improve gradually anyway.

Thanks for picking this back up - I feel like this function should be available in some of the other modes as well.
Have some parsing comments (I don't have an opinion on it - but wonder if we should evaluate/consider an external dependency to help with url parsing?), and otherwise could we simplify the deps being added for parsing?

Bound the DNS lookups with an abort-aware deadline.
isUrlSafeToFetch awaits dns.promises.lookup(host, { all: true }) with no timeout and no abort signal. Two call sites are affected.
The initial pre-check runs before the abort controller and its timer are created. A slow resolver can keep execute pending past the 30-second deadline, and no timeout message is produced for that phase.
The redirect check runs after the timer starts, but its lookup does not observe the abort. The timeout is reported only after the lookup returns and the next fetch rejects.
Suggested remedy:
Wrap the lookup so it stops waiting when the signal aborts. If the signal is already aborted, reject before starting the lookup. Otherwise, attach rejection handling on every path so a late failure is not unhandled. Remove the abort listener when the lookup settles. The wrapper stops waiting only. The underlying OS lookup is not cancelled and still runs to completion in the background.
In isUrlSafeToFetch, rethrow the error only when the signal is aborted. Keep returning false for ordinary DNS failures, so a failed lookup still blocks the host.
Give the pre-check its own timer. Create it immediately before the pre-check, and clear it in a finally block. Do not start the main timer before the pre-check. The user approval wait would then count against the deadline. In the pre-check's catch, report Request timed out after ${DEFAULT_TIMEOUT_MS}ms through the existing error path, not the blocked-host message.
Pass controller.signal to the redirect check. The redirect lookup then stops waiting at the existing deadline, and the existing timeout handling reports it.
The pre-check and the main fetch each get up to 30 seconds, so one call can take up to 60 seconds. Update the comment above the redirect loop that describes a single timeout for the whole operation.
Moving the pre-check after approval alone does not bound it. The awaited lookup would still ignore the deadline, so the wrapper is still required.

Update isUrlSafeToFetch to accept an abort signal and use an abort-aware wrapper
around dns.promises.lookup, rejecting immediately if already aborted, removing
listeners on settlement, and handling late lookup failures; rethrow only abort
errors and keep returning false for ordinary DNS failures. In execute, give the
initial pre-check its own DEFAULT_TIMEOUT_MS timer cleared in finally, report
its timeout through the existing timeout error path, and pass controller.signal
to redirect checks. Update the redirect-loop comment to clarify that the
pre-check and main fetch each have their own timeout.
Add a saved-true save case for web fetch auto-approval.
The suite covers a default-false save and a toggle from default. It does not cover a saved alwaysAllowWebFetch: true that arrives after mount and then goes out with an unrelated Save. A later change that overwrites the saved value would pass the current tests. The current implementation keeps the value, so this is a coverage gap, not a live defect.

Add a test alongside the existing default-false save case that initializes
renderSettingsView with alwaysAllowWebFetch set to true, makes an unrelated
change to enable Save, and verifies the updateSettings message preserves
alwaysAllowWebFetch as true.
Add a finalize test for a fetch_web_content payload that omits prompt.
The finalize tests cover prompt present and prompt: null. They do not cover a payload with no prompt key. The finalize branch passes args.prompt through without a check, and the declared argument type makes prompt optional. A regression that rejects an omitted prompt would pass the current finalize tests. Add a test that sends only url and asserts that prompt is undefined.

- Around line 118-134: Move the dns.promises.lookup check out of the
pre-approval hostname validation flow and run it only after askApproval accepts
the fetch; keep literal-IP and internal-hostname checks before approval, and

## Persisted Setting Checklist
- [ ] Define the setting, validation, and optionality in `packages/types/src/global-settings.ts` (or the appropriate provider/settings schema). Define a shared default constant when multiple readers need the same default.
Add the "web" tool group to the built-in ask and architect modes so
fetch_web_content is available in code, debug, ask and architect.
Add an alwaysAllowWebFetch auto-approve setting (default false) so each
fetch still requires explicit user approval unless the user opts in.
The toggle is independent of the read-only toggle, respects the master
auto-approval switch, and does not affect the internal/private address
blocking that runs before approval.
