chore(ipc): drop the unused @roo-code/ipc client half - #2265
The original D4 premise was: "packages/ipc client half is unpublished (404 on npm), so nothing consumes it."
The npm half holds. I re-confirmed @roo-code/ipc returns 404 from the registry. But the premise was broken by an in-repo consumer the gates could not see:
So the launcher stays and the transport moves to it.
Evidence table: every IpcClient / agent-evals reference

agent-evals (post-change, all still valid): 2 CI workflow lines, 2 root package.json scripts, 6 scripts/solheim-smoke/* imports, 4 README cross-links, 3 test temp-dir prefixes, 1 trace kind constant.
Untouched by design:packages/ipc/src/ipc-server.ts, src/extension/api.ts:29/43/73 (IpcServer users), and the 6 vi.mock("@roo-code/ipc", ...) specs in src/extension/__tests__/.
What changed
Deletedpackages/ipc/src/ipc-client.ts (147 lines) and IpcClientEvents in packages/types/src/ipc.ts (12 lines).
Addedscripts/agent-evals/ipc-client.ts (191L): EvalIpcClient on node:net, speaking the exact node-ipc framing the extension's IpcServer already uses (js-message envelope + \f delimiter), with the same \.\pipe\ rewrite on Windows.
Addedipc-client.test.ts (6 tests) and ipc-client.interop.test.ts (1 test) that drives the real IpcServer as the interop gate.
Updatedpackages/ipc exports, package.json description, README.md to the server-only surface.
Behaviour preserved (not just compiled)
The launcher connects before the extension host creates the socket, so the old client's 500ms connect retry is load-bearing. It is reimplemented and covered by the "retries until the socket exists" test. Also preserved: ack handshake, isReady gating, task-event delivery, disconnect reporting, and credential-safe logging (issue counts only, never payload values).

The single failure is api/providers/__tests__/mistral.spec.ts > keeps TimeoutError when the timeout fires before a later caller abort, which is pre-existing and unrelated: no src/ file is touched by this PR, and the brief tracks it as open until #2257 merges.
scripts/solheim-smoke/config.test.ts also fails on Windows (it asserts POSIX paths). I confirmed it fails identically with this change stashed, so it is pre-existing and untouched.
191L client + 280L tests (first commit), +269L (review batch), none shipped in the VSIX
The new 191-line frame parser lives at scripts/agent-evals/ipc-client.ts, which is absent from PACKAGE_CONFIGS (scripts/stryker-diff.mjs:14-72); packages/ipc is likewise absent. So no mutation gate covers this diff's executable logic, and the gate legitimately sees ~0 mutants. The @roo-code/ipc#build dependency asserted by src/scripts/verify-coverage-contract.mjs:55 is unchanged because the package still exists and still builds.
Review batch (second commit)
Two defects found by review probes, one hardening item, plus the coverage that was missing:
Item
Change
Witness
Reconnect buffer carryover (P2, data-integrity)
_buffer cleared in onClose()
"drops a partial frame when the socket closes"
Frame ceiling (hardening, orchestrator-ruled)
MAX_FRAME_BYTES = 64 MiB on pre-delimiter growth; one bounded log line, then drop
"drops the connection with one bounded log line past the frame ceiling"
Split-chunk coverage (P3-3)
none needed, pins existing behaviour
"waits for the delimiter when one frame arrives split across chunks"
Flood liveness coverage (P3-3)
none needed, pins existing behaviour
"stays alive through a delimiter-free flood..."
The carryover was real. A probe showed 34 bytes of a partial frame surviving close and reconnection, which corrupts the first frame of the new session. The rest of that frame can never arrive on a new socket, so keeping it guarantees a bad parse later. Both fix witnesses were verified to fail when the fix is reverted and pass with it.
The ceiling is hardening, not a fix. A legitimate task event is orders of magnitude smaller than 64 MiB, and the node-ipc client this replaces had no bound at all, so the ceiling cannot truncate a real frame in practice. It logs one line with no payload content and no size detail, because the pending bytes may carry the provider credential.
The two P3-3 witnesses are coverage, not fixes. They passed immediately against the unmodified client, which is the point: they pin the partial-frame and flood-containment behaviour that previously rested on code trace alone.
Follow-up worth noting
scripts/** being knip-ignored is the root cause of this premise error, and it will hide the next one too. That is a separate decision, not shipped here.
What:
- Delete packages/ipc/src/ipc-client.ts (147 lines) and its IpcClientEvents
type in packages/types/src/ipc.ts.
- Move the one live consumer, scripts/agent-evals/launcher.ts, onto a local
EvalIpcClient in scripts/agent-evals/ipc-client.ts that speaks the same
node-ipc framing the extension's IpcServer already uses.
- Update packages/ipc exports, package.json description and README to the
server-only surface.
Why:
The D4 premise was "unpublished, verified 404 on npm, so nothing consumes it".
That holds for npm (404 re-confirmed) but missed an in-repo consumer:
scripts/agent-evals/launcher.ts imported IpcClient. scripts/** is knip-ignored,
which is why no gate flagged it. The launcher is not vestigial, it is exercised
by the CI `compile` job (test:agent-evals:unit, agent-evals:check-types) and it
is the runtime behind the main-only solheim-provider-smoke workflow, so the
honest route is to keep the behaviour and remove the library class.
Behaviour preserved: ack handshake, isReady gating, task event delivery,
disconnect reporting, and the 500ms connect retry the launcher relies on
because it connects before the extension host creates the socket.
Impact:
- No IpcClient symbol remains anywhere in the repo.
- IpcServer and src/extension/api.ts are untouched.
- The launcher no longer depends on a workspace package for its transport.
- +6 unit tests and +1 interop test that drives the real IpcServer.

Documentation
Updated IPC guidance to describe the server-only package and show how to send messages over its socket.
Changes
The IPC package no longer provides a client. Client connections are handled separately in evaluation tooling.
Tests
Added checks for client-server communication, message delivery, reconnection, malformed messages, and socket handling, including oversized frames.
The IPC package now exports only its server implementation. Agent-evals use a local EvalIpcClient to connect to the server and exchange framed messages. New tests cover client behavior and client-server interoperability.
The package removes its client implementation and IpcClientEvents type, and no longer re-exports the client. The description and README document the server-only package and message framing.

Full details: Security Boundaries
Explanation
No changed path introduces a concrete security-boundary failure. scripts/agent-evals/ipc-client.ts validates received IPC payloads with ipcMessageSchema.safeParse before emitting events, avoids logging payload contents, and drops oversized frames. packages/ipc/src/ipc-server.ts validates commands before dispatch, and the launcher connects only to its generated temporary socket. The new client sends typed commands through this existing validation boundary and does not bypass approval or allowlist controls.
Full details: Persistence Integrity
Explanation
No changed persistence path exists. The PR changes IPC transport, framing, and test cleanup. The only artifact write path in scripts/agent-evals/launcher.ts is unchanged from base and still awaits fs.writeFile before fs.rename (lines 152–157), preserving atomic replacement. The new client buffer is transient socket state, not persisted state.

Full details: Regression Evidence
Explanation
The new EvalIpcClient.sendCommand has an uncovered pre-ack negative branch. At scripts/agent-evals/ipc-client.ts:210-214, it logs and returns when _clientId is undefined. The command tests at scripts/agent-evals/ipc-client.test.ts:146-167 and scripts/agent-evals/ipc-client.interop.test.ts:60-63 call sendCommand only after isReady is true. The changed launcher uses this client at scripts/agent-evals/launcher.ts:127-142, so the omitted branch is regression-relevant.
Resolution
Add a focused unit test with a connected peer that withholds the acknowledgement. Call sendCommand before the acknowledgement, assert that the peer receives no command, assert that client.isReady remains false, and retain the existing split-frame coverage.
Full details: Lifecycle Resource Cleanup
Explanation
The changed interop test still leaks IpcServer listeners. IpcServer.listen() installs anonymous connect, socket.disconnected, and message listeners on ipc.server at packages/ipc/src/ipc-server.ts:36-39. The test starts that path at scripts/agent-evals/ipc-client.interop.test.ts:54, but its finally block only disconnects the client and calls node-ipcserver.stop() at lines 69-72. node-ipcstop() only calls this.server.close(); it does not remove those listeners. A closed server retained by the singleton can therefore retain the IpcServer and callback state after the test, and repeated server lifecycle use can retain or duplicate handlers.
Resolution
Add an owned, idempotent shutdown method to IpcServer. Store the exact connect, socket.disconnected, and message handler functions installed by listen(), remove them with off() during shutdown, close active client sockets, and make repeated shutdown safe. Update the interop test to call this method instead of calling the global node-ipc server directly.

What:
- Clear _buffer in onClose() so a partial frame from a dead connection cannot
prepend to the next session's stream after the 500ms auto-reconnect.
- Add MAX_FRAME_BYTES (64 MiB) on pre-delimiter accumulation; past it the
client logs one bounded line and drops the connection.
- Add five tests: reconnect carryover, frame split across chunks, a 4 MB
delimiter-free flood followed by a valid frame, the ceiling drop, and a pin
on the production ceiling value.
Why:
Review of Zoo-Code-Org#2265 found the carryover by probe: 34 bytes of a partial frame
survived close and reconnection, which corrupts the first frame of the new
session. The rest of that frame can never arrive on a new socket, so keeping
it guarantees a bad parse later.
The ceiling is hardening, not a fix: the node-ipc client this replaces had no
bound at all, and a legitimate task event is orders of magnitude smaller than
64 MiB, so it cannot truncate a real frame in practice.
Impact:
- Two witnesses fail without their fix (verified by reverting each one).
- The split-chunk and flood witnesses pin existing correct behaviour and pass
without any change; they are coverage, not fixes.
- No new dependency, no suppressions, no change to the wire format.

Track the scan offset in onData so each chunk scans only new bytes.
125-125: Minor · Performance & Scalability · Poor tradeoff
Track the scan offset in onData so each chunk scans only new bytes.
onData re-splits the whole pending buffer on every chunk. A peer that sends a large delimiter-free frame forces each call to rescan all pending bytes, so work grows quadratically up to MAX_FRAME_BYTES. Track the last scanned position and search only the new bytes. Reset that position wherever _buffer is cleared, in onClose and onOversizedFrame.

Check strict typing and exhaustive behavior across normal, boundary, error, cancellation, retry, and compatibility paths.
What:
- Buffer the test peer's partial frames: accumulate chunks, dispatch only
delimiter-terminated segments, and retain the tail for the next event.
- Replace the split-frame test's 120 ms timer with a promise gate the test
releases after the zero-event assertion, so the assertion cannot race a
scheduling delay.
- Enforce MAX_FRAME_BYTES in UTF-8 bytes with incremental Buffer.byteLength
accounting on the appended tail, and correct the comment's 2x claim.
- Add two witnesses: a peer frame split across two chunks, and a 3-byte
character frame whose code-unit count is under a 4096 ceiling but whose
6000 wire bytes are over it.
Why:
CodeRabbit round 2 raised three findings on Zoo-Code-Org#2265. All three premises were
verified in the pre-fix source before changing anything: the peer split each
chunk on the delimiter with no carry buffer and threw on a split frame; the
split-frame test gated the second half on a 120 ms timer that readiness plus
60 ms could outrun; and the ceiling compared against String#length, which
counts UTF-16 code units, so 3-byte characters let the pending frame reach
~192 MiB of wire bytes instead of 64 MiB.
Impact:
- Three witnesses fail on the pre-fix head and pass after the fix (each
verified by reverting its own change).
- The byte ceiling is O(chunk): each chunk is scanned once and only its
trailing partial segment is measured, so a delimiter-free flood does not
re-measure the whole pending buffer per event.
- No behaviour change for ASCII frames; the ceiling now bounds wire bytes.

Check the byte ceiling before a delimiter-completed frame is dispatched.
126-130: Minor · Functional Correctness · Quick win
Check the byte ceiling before a delimiter-completed frame is dispatched.
onData passes a frame to onFrame when its delimiter arrives in the same chunk, but it never checks that frame against MAX_FRAME_BYTES. The ceiling check runs only on the trailing partial segment. A frame that crosses the ceiling in its delimiter-bearing chunk is parsed and can be dispatched, instead of dropping the connection.

In onData, check each delimiter-completed frame’s accumulated UTF-8 byte length
against the frame-size ceiling before calling onFrame; invoke onOversizedFrame
and stop processing when it exceeds the limit. Preserve the existing handling
for frames within the limit.
Wait for the first chunk before the second write in the split-frame test.
Wait for the first chunk before the second write in the split-frame test.
The test pauses for a fixed 60 ms between its two writes. It does not confirm that the peer read the first half. If an event-loop or OS stall delays the peer, both halves can arrive in one data event. The carry buffer then assembles nothing, and the test still passes because it asserts only peer.received.length === 1. The test does not detect a regression in that case.
Make the test deterministic:
Count the data events the test peer receives.
Replace the timer with a wait until the count reaches 1 before writing the second half.
After the frame arrives, assert that the count is 2.
Use a promise or waitFor on the counter instead of a timer.

Update the split-frame test around the two raw.write calls to count data events
received by the peer and wait for the first event before writing the second
half, replacing the fixed delay. After the complete frame arrives, assert that
the peer received exactly two data events.
Add a boundary test for a pending frame of exactly maxFrameBytes.
Add a boundary test for a pending frame of exactly maxFrameBytes.
No test leaves exactly maxFrameBytes pending before a delimiter. The ceiling tests send 5120 and 6000 bytes, which exceed the limit. Changing > to >= at ipc-client.ts:141 would not fail any test. A delimiter in the same chunk does not exercise this check with a non-zero pending size, because onData resets _bufferBytes for each completed frame.
Add a test before the "keeps the production frame ceiling" case. It sends 4096 bytes with no delimiter, then sends the delimiter. Both calls run synchronously, because a socket close clears the pending buffer. The pad key sits outside data, and onFrame reads only data, so the padding does not affect parsing.
Test to add
it("accepts a pending frame of exactly the ceiling size",()=>{constceiling=4096constsocketPath=socketPathIn(os.tmpdir(),"exact-limit-unused")constevents: TaskEvent[]=[]constlogs: unknown[][]=[]constenvelope=(pad: string)=>JSON.stringify({type: "message",
pad,data: {type: IpcMessageType.TaskEvent,origin: IpcOrigin.Server,data: {eventName: RooCodeEventName.TaskStarted,payload: ["task-1"],taskId: 1,}satisfiesTaskEvent,},})constbody=envelope("A".repeat(ceiling-Buffer.byteLength(envelope(""),"utf8")))assert.equal(Buffer.byteLength(body,"utf8"),ceiling)constclient=newEvalIpcClient(socketPath,(...args)=>logs.push(args),{maxFrameBytes: ceiling})client.on(IpcMessageType.TaskEvent,(event)=>events.push(eventasTaskEvent))try{// Bracket access reaches the private onData without a type assertion.// Both calls must stay synchronous: a socket close clears the pending buffer.client["onData"](body)assert.equal(logs.some((entry)=>String(entry[0]).includes("MAX_FRAME_BYTES")),false)client["onData"](DELIMITER)assert.equal(events.length,1)assert.equal(events[0]?.eventName,RooCodeEventName.TaskStarted)assert.equal(logs.some((entry)=>String(entry[0]).includes("MAX_FRAME_BYTES")),false)}finally{client.disconnect()}})
Under >=, the first call logs MAX_FRAME_BYTES and clears the buffer, so the delimiter dispatches no event and the test fails.

Both oversized-frame tests waited only for the MAX_FRAME_BYTES log line and
then asserted `isConnected === false`. The handler logs before it destroys the
socket, and `_isConnected` is cleared in the socket close callback, which runs
after a timer tick. The assertion therefore depended on that callback winning
a race with the 20ms waitFor poll.
The wait predicate now covers the disconnect as well, so the assertion reads
the settled state. Confirmed against a probe that records `isConnected` inside
the log callback: it is `true` there and `false` one macrotask later.
Red proof: with the close deferred by 50ms, both tests fail with
"the connection is dropped" on the old wait and pass on the new one.
What: check the assembled frame's UTF-8 byte size inside the delimiter loop,
before the buffer reset, and return after onOversizedFrame instead of parsing.
Why: the ceiling only ran on the trailing partial segment, so an oversized
frame whose delimiter arrived in the same chunk was parsed and dispatched
instead of dropping the connection.
Impact: a peer can no longer bypass MAX_FRAME_BYTES by sending the delimiter
with the overrun; the connection drops with a single bounded log line. The
O(chunk) byte accounting is unchanged, and the exact-ceiling boundary still
passes.
Fixed in 8b5bf9e: onData now measures each delimiter-completed frame (_bufferBytes + Buffer.byteLength(segment, "utf8")) before dispatch and drops the connection via onOversizedFrame() when the frame exceeds MAX_FRAME_BYTES. The check runs before the buffer reset and returns immediately after an oversize, so the rest of the chunk is neither scanned nor appended and the pinned single-log-line behavior holds (a break was probed and re-trips the ceiling log, so return is load-bearing).
Tests: four new cases in scripts/agent-evals/ipc-client.test.ts (oversized frame with its delimiter in the same chunk, valid frame after an oversize not processed, exact-ceiling boundary, multibyte byte counting). Red-on-head captured before the fix (13 pass / 4 fail); the suite is now 63/63 with check-types clean. scripts/ is outside the per-package mutation gate, verified with the gate's own packageForPath.

Add a reconnect case with an acknowledged first session.
324-329: Minor · Functional Correctness · Quick win
Add a reconnect case with an acknowledged first session.
The reconnect test sends no Ack on its first connection, so clientId is never set before the close. onClose keeps _clientId from an earlier Ack, so isReady is true after reconnect and before the new session's Ack. No test covers that window. Add a case that acknowledges the first session, reconnects, and asserts isReady is false until the second Ack.

Add a reconnect case in the test around the `connections === 1` branch that
sends an `Ack` during the first session, then reconnects and asserts `isReady`
remains false until the second session’s `Ack` arrives. Preserve the existing
partial-frame reconnect coverage.
Add a Windows-shaped path case to the mapper test.
Add a Windows-shaped path case to the mapper test.
The Windows branch asserts only the POSIX input. A C:\... input, which launcher.ts produces on Windows, is not covered. Add that case and assert the same node-ipc mapping. Do not normalize backslashes in resolveSocketPath. node-ipc does not normalize them on either side, so a client-only change would produce a pipe name that the server does not listen on.

Add a Windows-shaped input assertion in the test around resolveSocketPath, using
a C:\... path and verifying the node-ipc mapping preserves its backslashes and
drive prefix; leave resolveSocketPath unchanged.

Check strict typing and exhaustive behavior across normal, boundary, error, cancellation, retry, and compatibility paths.
What: in the partial-frame carryover test, the connection-1 peer now destroys
the socket from the write callback instead of calling socket.destroy() on the
line after socket.write().
Why: socket.destroy() can discard a pending write, so the 34-byte partial frame
was not structurally guaranteed to reach the client before the socket died. The
test then could pass on the second session alone, which is exactly the coverage
gap CodeRabbit raised on PR Zoo-Code-Org#2265 (thread PRRT_kwDOSK-bwM6yOYMK). The callback
form makes the red-on-revert proof structural instead of empirical.
Impact: test-only, one executable line. No production code, no protocol change.
The 34-byte write is in practice already delivered (panel probes: 40/40 and
20/20), so this removes a latent soundness hole rather than a live flake.

Premise correction (re-baseline)
The original D4 premise was: "
packages/ipcclient half is unpublished (404 on npm), so nothing consumes it."The npm half holds. I re-confirmed
@roo-code/ipcreturns 404 from the registry. But the premise was broken by an in-repo consumer the gates could not see:scripts/**is listed inknip.jsonignore, so neitherpnpm knipnorpnpm knip:productioncould report it. That is why D4 looked safe.Route chosen: (a) migrate the consumer, keep behaviour
Route (b) "the launcher is dead, delete it" is disproven. The launcher is live on three independent paths:

The@roo-code/ipc#builddependency asserted bysrc/scripts/verify-coverage-contract.mjs:55is unchanged because the package still exists and still builds.Review batch (second commit)
Two defects found by review probes, one hardening item, plus the coverage that was missing:
_buffercleared inonClose()MAX_FRAME_BYTES = 64 MiBon pre-delimiter growth; one bounded log line, then dropThe carryover was real.
Follow-up worth noting
scripts/**being knip-ignored is the root cause of this premise error, and it will hide the next one too. That is a separate decision, not shipped here.
