perf(webview): replace axios in key-info hooks with fetch - #2261
useOpenRouterKeyInfo, useRequestyKeyInfo, and useOpenRouterModelProviders use global fetch for their GET requests. The webview's axios dependency and lockfile importer entry are removed; the extension's axios dependency remains.
The hooks preserve their request URLs, methods, bearer headers, response validation, and empty fallbacks. Explicit non-2xx checks preserve the failure behavior previously supplied by axios. Tests cover transport rejection and invalid JSON as well as schema failures.
Review follow-up (local, pending commit/push)
Preserve the axios import ban in the later ESLint override for component specs.
Share the fetch transport stub in test-utils.tsx, with one documented response-double cast. Each consuming spec restores spies in afterEach with vi.restoreAllMocks().
Remove the unreachable thrown-ZodError branch; safeParse failures retain their validation log and fallback.
Replace phase-history comments and add text-only/missing-architecture cases plus a nonzero cache-write-price assertion.
The current tests have evolved since characterization; assertion bodies are no longer claimed to be identical to the original axios tests.
Bundle measurement
Production builds using the same installed dependencies and toolchain, comparing the current webview with an isolated copy whose three hooks were restored to their pre-conversion axios implementations:

The fetch entry also contains zero occurrences of AxiosError, ERR_NETWORK, or isAxiosError. These measurements replace the earlier numbers recorded before the latest merge from main.
Validation
Hook specs: 9 files, 212 tests passed.
Changed-file ESLint and tsc --noEmit: passed.
Webview production build: passed.
Axios imports are rejected in both component specs and non-test files; a fetch-based component spec passes the rule.
Re-review confirmed the new image-support and cache-write-price assertions reject the corresponding hardcoded mutants.
No lint suppressions added.
The review follow-up is staged locally. Repository commit hooks passed, but the commit is pending interactive GPG signing; it has not been pushed.
What: useOpenRouterKeyInfo, useRequestyKeyInfo and
useOpenRouterModelProviders now call global fetch instead of axios.get, and
axios is removed from webview-ui/package.json plus the webview importer block
in pnpm-lock.yaml.
Why: these three hooks were the only axios consumers in the webview bundle.
axios shipped ~50 kB of entry-chunk code for three plain GET requests with no
interceptors, no timeout config and no axios-specific error handling anywhere
in the webview. Dropping it removes that weight from every webview load.
Impact: entry chunk 6,183,743 B -> 6,133,127 B (-50,616 B, -0.82%). axios no
longer appears in the entry bundle at all. Behavior is preserved by
construction: characterization tests pin URL, method, headers, response
shaping and the non-2xx throw decision, and the same 19 assertions pass
unchanged against both the axios and the fetch implementation.
src/ keeps its axios dependency; 14 production files there still import it.

## Test Placement Guidance
- Use `webview-ui` tests for React rendering, hooks, component state, forms, validation, and webview UI wiring.
Summary
Summary by CodeRabbit
Refactor
Provider information requests now use the browser’s built-in networking. Unsuccessful responses, invalid data, and request failures continue to be handled without returning provider details.
Axios has been removed from the webview package, and linting now flags its use.
Tests
Expanded coverage for missing credentials, default and custom endpoints, provider data, and image support.
Added checks for unsuccessful responses, invalid data, network failures, and responses that cannot be parsed.
Three webview hooks now use fetch for OpenRouter and Requesty requests. Their tests cover request details, JSON parsing, response validation, and request failures. The webview package removes Axios, and ESLint rejects Axios imports in TypeScript and TSX source files.
The three hooks now use fetch, check HTTP status, and parse response JSON. Tests cover request details, successful results, schema failures, non-OK responses, rejected requests, and JSON parsing failures. A shared transport stub records request details and supplies response results.
Remove and restrict Axios webview-ui/package.json, webview-ui/eslint.config.mjs
The webview package no longer declares Axios. ESLint rejects Axios imports in TypeScript and TSX source files and component specs.
No concrete merge-blocking issue is established for the fetch migration, transport tests, or Axios restrictions. The change appears mergeable subject to normal checks.

Full details: Regression Evidence
Explanation
Focused hook tests cover the changed fetch behavior at the hook layer. The OpenRouter key and Requesty key specs verify unset-key no-request behavior, default and custom URLs, GET headers, valid parsing, schema failures, non-2xx responses, transport rejection, and invalid JSON. The model-provider spec verifies missing model IDs, URL construction, response mapping, image and cache branches, schema failures, non-2xx responses, transport rejection, and invalid JSON. Configuration and dependency changes are mechanical, and no durable visible UI changed.
Full details: Security Boundaries
Explanation
The changed paths replace Axios with fetch while preserving existing API-key headers and URL inputs. Each response is checked for response.ok, parsed, and validated with the existing Zod schema before use. No changed path leaks secrets or PII, executes unvalidated input, or bypasses an approval or allowlist control.
Full details: Persistence Integrity
Explanation
No changed persistence path exists. The PR changes three hooks from Axios GET calls to awaited fetch() and JSON parsing, adds fetch test helpers and tests, and removes the webview Axios dependency. The changed code does not add or modify storage writes, persisted defaults, rollback handling, or atomic persistence operations.
Full details: Lifecycle Resource Cleanup
Explanation
No changed lifecycle path creates or retains a listener, watcher, timer, provider, or other managed resource. The three changed hooks replace their existing Axios requests with awaited fetch calls and keep the same React Query queryFn structure; they add no restart, subscription, or cancellation behavior. The fetch test stub is restored in afterEach in all affected specs.

What: webview-ui/eslint.config.mjs gains a no-restricted-imports block scoped
to src/**/*.{ts,tsx} that rejects `axios` with a message explaining the scoped
dependency drop.
Why: axios was removed from webview-ui/package.json, but pnpm's hoisted store
still resolves it, so a new `import axios from "axios"` would silently
reintroduce the dependency instead of failing loudly. The guard turns the
"axios removed" claim from incidental into enforced.
Impact: no runtime change. A webview file importing axios now fails lint with
exit 1. src/ is unaffected and keeps its axios dependency.
What: one new case per hook covering a 2xx response whose body is not valid
JSON, so response.json() rejects inside the try block. Each asserts the same
log call and fallback value as the existing blanket-catch cases.
Why: the fetch swap moved body parsing inside the try, so a malformed 2xx body
now flows through the catch instead of axios' parse step. That path was
uncovered. The transport seam gained an optional jsonRejects field so json()
can reject while ok stays true.
Impact: no production change. Verified fail-on-shape: with the hook's catch
changed to rethrow, the new case fails at isSuccess, so it pins the swallow
rather than merely exercising the line.

webview-ui/src/components/ui/hooks/__tests__/useOpenRouterKeyInfo.spec.tsx:119 Minor · Functional Correctness · Quick win
Add a warm-refetch failure test for useOpenRouterKeyInfo.
The failure tests in useOpenRouterKeyInfo.spec.tsx (lines 119-148) each render with a new QueryClient and no prior key info. They cover only the cold-start case. The hook returns null from its catch block, and it sets no placeholderData, keepPreviousData, or initialData. A failed refetch after a successful lookup therefore replaces cached key info with null. No test covers that sequence, so a change that keeps the previous key info on a failed refetch would still pass this suite.
Add a test that:
Seeds a successful key-info response and asserts that result.current.data holds that value.
Makes the next request fail with a non-2xx response or a rejection, then calls refetch().
Asserts that result.current.data is null.
The repository's test guidance requires both cold-start and warm coverage for code with fallback behavior.

Add a warm-refetch failure test for useRequestyKeyInfo.
The new spec covers only the cold-start path of the fallback in useRequestyKeyInfo. The hook's catch block returns null, so every failure test starts with an empty cache. No test resolves a successful balance and then fails a refetch. The repository's __tests__ guidance requires both cold-start and warm coverage for code with fallback behavior. Add a test that resolves the key info, makes the refetch return a 403, and asserts that data is null. This test documents the current overwrite behavior and guards it against future changes.

Assert the status message in the 403 logging test.
The test at useRequestyKeyInfo.spec.tsx line 119 uses expect.anything() for the logged error. That matcher accepts any non-null value, including an Error with an empty message. If the hook stopped building Request failed with status code 403, this test would still pass. Replace the matcher so the test checks the status text:
As per path instructions: "Reject weak assertions on values that could take multiple forms: .toBeDefined() or .toHaveBeenCalled() alone are not sufficient when the actual type, value, or object identity is verifiable."

What: the non-2xx cases now match the logged Error's message exactly
("Request failed with status code 401/403/500") instead of expect.anything().
The schema-validation cases now match the logged ZodError's issues array and a
real issue path instead of expect.anything().
Why: expect.anything() accepts any value, including an Error with an empty
message, so a regression that dropped the HTTP status from the thrown message
would still pass. The same looseness applied to the validation-failure logs,
which is the adjacent instance of the pattern.
Impact: no production change. Verified the tightened matchers bite by
temporarily degrading each hook (message without status, validation log
replaced by a generic Error): in both cases exactly the targeted test fails.
This branch was re-merged onto current main (no rebase, merge commit only) to clear the CONFLICTING / DIRTY state.
New head:ca0ab534aaac601f44b789cef40fdf92e56c598a (was 1d00d075160df5d19301cbb698f872f1858ea366)
Conflict resolution
One content conflict, in webview-ui/src/components/ui/hooks/__tests__/useOpenRouterModelProviders.spec.tsx. Both intents were integrated rather than picking a side:
From main: the spec now builds its query client with createTestQueryClient() from @src/utils/test-utils instead of an inline new QueryClient(...). This landed in the wrapper body via auto-merge.
From this branch: the spec keeps its phase-2 fetch rewrite (stubTransport spying on globalThis.fetch, the 8 fetch-semantics cases). The conflicting import block was resolved to keep main's createTestQueryClient import and drop imports that the fetch rewrite had already made dead: axios, zod, and the now-unused QueryClient.
The merged spec therefore exercises the merged implementation: useOpenRouterModelProviders.ts is untouched by main (no diff on that file between the merge base and 51b7f579f), so the hook under test is exactly the fetch-based one this PR ships.
pnpm-lock.yaml, webview-ui/package.json, and webview-ui/eslint.config.mjs auto-merged cleanly. Their net delta versus main is only this PR's intent: axios removed from the webview importer/lockfile, plus the no-restricted-imports guard against re-importing axios.
Verification
pnpm install --frozen-lockfile at the worktree root: exit 0, "Lockfile is up to date, resolution step is skipped" (lockfile was not regenerated).
webview-uicheck-types (tsc --noEmit): exit 0, no diagnostics.
ESLint on the resolved spec and the hook: exit 0, zero warnings.
All of the above were re-run against the committed tree after the pre-commit hook finished, not only against the working copy.
CI
CI needs to re-run against the new head; the previous green runs were on the pre-merge commit. mergeable now reports MERGEABLE, though mergeStateStatus is BLOCKED pending those checks and required review.
