Problem

Fixes #257.

After switching away from a task that was still streaming and then switching back into it, the chat can stay stuck on "API Request..." with the send button replaced by Stop, so every message the user types is queued instead of sent. Reloading the webview clears it, which points at message state rather than an extension flag.

Root cause

The webview derives its streaming lock from the message list alone (webview-ui/src/components/chat/ChatView.tsx#L566-608):

  1. modifiedMessages.at(-1)?.partial === true → isStreaming = true, or
  2. the last api_req_started whose text JSON has cost === undefined → isStreaming = true.

isStreaming has two visible effects, both matching the report: ChatRow renders chat:apiRequest.streaming = "API Request..." (ChatRow.tsx#L428), and ChatTextArea swaps Send for Stop (ChatTextArea.tsx#L1266) while handleSendMessage routes into postMessage({ type: "queueMessage" }) (ChatView.tsx#L655-665).

A task abandoned mid-stream persists exactly that tail. The streaming loop skips the finalizer on abandonment (Task.ts#L4417-4426: abortStream runs only when !this.abandoned), and abortStream is the only place that un-partials the trailing message and writes cost/cancelReason into the last api_req_started.

resumeTaskFromHistory() already reconciles this on resume, but it removed a trailing partial reasoning bubble only. A trailing partial text bubble survived, so switching back into such a task stayed stuck on every future resume until the webview was reloaded.

Fix

Two parts in resumeTaskFromHistory() (src/core/task/Task.ts, +62/−5):

1. Widen the strip. The trailing partial-bubble cleanup now treats reasoning and text identically — previously only reasoning was removed, which left the text bubble re-locking every resume. Every other partial say type is kept, because partial command_output records a command that already ran. A single pass reaches the fixed point for the realistic sequence: the api_req_started placeholder is emitted before streaming starts (Task.ts#L3936-3941), so the partial bubble is always the later message — the loop pops it, then the existing splice removes the now-last cost-less placeholder.

2. Restore matched text as finalized. A partial text bubble is dropped only if its content is absent from API history. The API append of the assistant turn is awaited (Task.ts#L5057) while the UI finalization is fire-and-forget (Task.ts#L5076), so an abort landing between those steps leaves a complete API turn and a partial: true UI bubble coexisting — dropping that row erased text the model still sees. On resume, each trailing partial text bubble whose content matches the last assistant turn's text — re-applying the streaming-time <thinking> strip on both sides so bubble-vs-accumulator comparison is exact — is re-added with partial cleared. Partial reasoning and unmatched text still drop; the restore runs only after the API read and its abort guard, so an evicted task cannot resurrect rows.

Retention as-is was rejected: ChatView's streaming memo returns true for any trailing partial === true row, so keeping the bubble without clearing the flag would reintroduce the exact lock this PR fixes. Clearing partial keeps the text visible as finalized content and leaves the input enabled — strictly better than dropping the row.

Tests

src/core/task/__tests__/Task.persistence.spec.ts, driving the real resumeTaskFromHistory() — now 74/74, including five cases pinning the new behavior:

Case Persisted tail Assertion
partial text text(partial) tail is the original task text; no partial: true; no api_req_started
partial text behind a dangling placeholder api_req_started(no cost) + text(partial) same
dangling placeholder alone api_req_started(no cost) same (guards pre-existing behavior)
negative control text(partial: false) + command_output(partial) both preserved
restore: complete turn in API history text(partial) + matching assistant turn row restored finalized, visible after resume
restore: thinking-tag comparison bubble stripped vs raw accumulator matched via the streaming <thinking> strip
no restore for reasoning reasoning(partial) + assistant turn still dropped
no restore when evicted mid-read task evicted during API read nothing resurrected into discarded history

Three of these fail without the production fix; the dangling-placeholder-alone case passes on base by design (that strip pre-existed). Mutation matrix: disabling the restore, keeping partial: true, removing the thinking-strip, and find-instead-of-findLast are each killed by a named test (the older-turn reject case was added specifically to kill the find variant).

webview-ui/src/components/chat/__tests__/ChatView.resume-strip-not-streaming.spec.tsx (+324) pins the coupling from the other side: the host strip list is read from Task.ts source and asserted against the real ChatView isStreaming memo — including "restored finalized shape → not streaming" and "restored shape left partial → still streaming" — so a future change to either side fails loudly instead of silently decoupling.

Verification run locally:

  • vitest run core/task/__tests__/Task.persistence.spec.ts — 74 passed
  • vitest run src/components/chat (webview-ui) — 511 passed, incl. the new pin spec
  • pnpm --dir src run check-types — clean
  • eslint --max-warnings=0 on touched files — clean, suppression counts unchanged (17 and 8)
  • pnpm lifecycle:model-check — all 8 sub-checks pass
  • Full src suite — 41 failures, all reproduced on the unmodified base: 40 in dist_assets.spec.ts (missing wasm build artifacts) and 1 pre-existing mistral.spec.ts abort-timing test.

Scope

This fixes the persistent stuck-on-resume case. Deliberately not in this PR, as follow-ups:

  1. The transient switch-window lock — while a task is evicted and the next hydrates, the webview still renders the old dangling tail.
  2. Messages silently dropped in that window: webviewMessageHandler.ts#L3964-3966 calls provider.getCurrentTask()?.messageQueueService.addMessage(...), but the task was already removed from the registry (ClineProvider.ts#L599-621 removes before abortTask).
  3. The deeper fix — finalizing the message on the abandoned path itself (Task.ts#L4417-4426) rather than reconciling on resume. That touches the streaming loop.

No status, delegation, interruption, completion, abandonment, persistence-ownership, or scheduler code is touched; this is a render-state cleanup inside resume (restored rows are in-memory at hydration), so the lifecycle model's actions and invariants are unchanged (pnpm lifecycle:model-check run anyway and passing).

No .changeset or CHANGELOG entry, per AGENTS.md.

What: resumeTaskFromHistory() now removes a trailing partial `text` bubble
alongside the partial `reasoning` bubble it already removed, keeping every
other partial say type (e.g. command output).

Why: the webview derives its streaming lock from the message list alone. A
trailing message with partial === true, or a last api_req_started whose text
JSON has no cost, both mean "request still in flight": ChatRow renders
"API Request..." and ChatTextArea swaps Send for Stop, so every message the
user types is queued instead of sent. An abandoned task switch skips
abortStream() (the only finalizer that un-partials the trailing message and
writes cost/cancelReason), so a task abandoned mid-stream persists that tail.
The existing resume self-heal removed partial reasoning but not partial text,
so switching back into such a task stayed stuck on every future resume until
the webview was reloaded. Fixes Zoo-Code-Org#257.

Impact: a resumed task no longer ends on a streaming artifact, so the chat
re-enables its input. Partial command output and finalized messages are
preserved. The transient switch-window lock and the deeper fix at abandonment
time remain out of scope.

Summary

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Bug Fixes
    • Resuming a task removes trailing incomplete reasoning and text messages. Partial text is restored as finalized only when it matches text from the latest assistant turn, ignoring <thinking> tags; unmatched text and reasoning are removed.
    • Resumed conversations no longer show a trailing in-progress indicator without cost or cancellation details as active. Other partial message types, including command output, remain intact.

Task resumption removes trailing partial reasoning and text bubbles. It restores partial text as finalized only when that text matches a text block in the last assistant API turn after thinking tags are stripped. Shared normalization also replaces inline tag removal in assistant text presentation.

Full details: Title check

Explanation

The title names the main change: resume-time reconciliation of dangling partial stream tails. It states both parts of the fix, strip and restore finalized. It follows the conventional commit style and stays specific to resumeTaskFromHistory. It is a single sentence of 12 words and avoids vague terms.

Full details: Description check

Explanation

The description covers the required template sections in substance. It names the linked issue (Fixes #257), explains the how, and lists the test procedure with exact commands and results. It also gives reviewers specific points to check, including the thinking-tag comparison, the abort guard, and the restore logic. It has no Visual Snapshot or Documentation Updates entries. The template expects those only for UI changes, and this PR changes a ChatView test but no rendered UI. It uses the 'Fixes' keyword instead of the template's 'Closes:' line. The Pre-Submission Checklist is not ticked. The description is mostly complete, and the remaining gaps are minor.

Full details: Out of Scope Changes check

Explanation

The production changes directly support [#257]. Task.resumeTaskFromHistory() reconciles stale streaming tails, stripThinkingTags keeps resume matching consistent with streaming, and the added tests verify finalized text, streaming state, and eviction behavior. No unrelated change is demonstrated.

Full details: Security Boundaries

Explanation

No changed path meets a security failure condition. Task.resumeTaskFromHistory() only compares persisted assistant text, removes selected partial UI rows, and restores matching text with partial: false; it does not execute the text or use it for authorization. stripThinkingTags() only transforms text, and presentAssistantMessage uses it in the existing text-display path. Tool dispatch, approval checks, and allowlists are unchanged. No new secret/PII sink or bypass is introduced.

Full details: Lifecycle Resource Cleanup

Explanation

No changed lifecycle path introduces a resource leak or duplicate work. The production changes only add pure text matching, replace inline tag stripping with the same pure helper, and transform local resume-history data before existing hydration. The new resume read remains guarded by this.abort || this.abandoned before hydration and before the existing resume ask. No listener, watcher, timer, provider, task, or cancellation registration is added. Existing eviction tests also verify that API-read cancellation stops hydration and persistence.

Full details: Linked Issues check

Explanation

Issue [#257] requires chat input to re-enable and messages to send after task or context switching. The change fixes the persistent resume case in Task.resumeTaskFromHistory() by removing trailing partial reasoning and text bubbles and restoring matching text with partial: false. The PR explicitly leaves the transient switch-window lock and messages sent while no current task is registered unresolved. Those cases remain within the linked issue's task-switch behavior.

Resolution

Implement and test the task/context switch path so stale streaming state cannot lock the next task during hydration. Preserve or route messages sent while no current task is registered. Add regression tests for input re-enablement and message sending during the switch window.

Full details: Persistence Integrity

Explanation

The prior persistence defect remains. The changed resumeTaskFromHistory path removes unmatched partial text and costless api_req_started records from modifiedClineMessages and then only calls hydrateClineMessages (src/core/task/Task.ts:3195-3248). On the normal resume path, ask() adds the resume ask, and addToClineMessages() awaits saveClineMessages() with its default merge: true (Task.ts:3297, 1724). saveTaskMessages merges disk-only records back into the file (src/core/task-persistence/mergeMessageSnapshots.ts:91-110). Therefore, if disk contains an unmatched partial text tail and a costless placeholder, the resume memory is cleaned but the next resume-ask save re-adds both records to ui_messages.json; a later reload can restore the stale streaming state. The new tests use a mocked ask() that throws immediately and explicitly expect no save, so they do not verify the persisted file after a normal resume.

Resolution

After both history reads and the abort check, persist the reconciled message array with an awaited authoritative replacement (saveTaskMessages(..., merge: false) or an equivalent saveClineMessages(false)) before hydrating or starting resume. If that write fails, retain the original in-memory state and stop or retry resume. Add an integration test that completes the normal resume path, rereads ui_messages.json, and verifies that unmatched partial text and costless api_req_started records are absent.

Full details: Regression Evidence

Explanation

The previous regression finding remains unresolved. The changed hasAssistantTextTurnFor() branch returns false when the last assistant API message has string content rather than array content (src/core/task/Task.ts:261-269). The focused resume tests cover array text, tool-only content, missing assistant turns, ordering, and other negative cases (Task.persistence.spec.ts:2448-2654), but no test combines a trailing partial say: "text" bubble with an assistant message such as { role: "assistant", content: "Different answer" }. Existing string-content fixtures test pending-action replay without a partial text bubble, so they do not exercise this changed branch.

Resolution

Add a focused Task.persistence.spec.ts test that calls resumeTaskFromHistory() with a trailing partial text bubble and a final assistant API message with string content. Assert hydration completes and the partial bubble is not restored.

2396-2399: Trivial · Data Integrity & Integration · Poor tradeoff

Cover the persisted snapshot written by the resume save.

The streaming-tail tests end inside the resume ask mock, which throws. The save that follows ask never runs in these tests. saveTaskMessages is also mocked, so the assertions see only the in-memory messages passed to the mock. A regression that changes which trailing partial messages reach disk would not fail these tests.

Add a test that resolves the resume ask and checks the contents written by the real save path, not the mock call arguments. Keep the existing mock-based assertions for the in-memory state.

What: add a webview-ui spec that renders ChatView with the message shapes
Task.resumeTaskFromHistory() produces and asserts the `isStreaming` prop it
passes to ChatTextArea. The host strip list is read out of Task.ts, and the
streaming partial say types are declared explicitly so a narrowed host list
fails the spec.

Why: Task.persistence.spec.ts:2335-2441 pins the host-side strip list
{reasoning, text}, and ChatView.tsx:566-608 derives the streaming lock from
the message list alone. The coupling between the two lived only in a comment,
so dropping a say type from the host strip list, or changing the memo, would
silently re-lock a resumed chat with no failing test.

Impact: test-only, zero production lines. Narrowing the host strip list to
`reasoning` fails 2 of the 8 cases; the committed src blob is unchanged
(Task.ts 14/5, Task.persistence.spec.ts 108/0).

Nitpick Assert that the host strip list excludes commandoutput, and correct the header.

219-219: Trivial · Maintainability & Code Quality · Low value

Assert that the host strip list excludes command_output, and correct the header.

The arrayContaining check passes when extra say types are added to the host strip list. Adding command_output would therefore leave every test in this file passing. The command_output case builds its message list directly and never applies the host strip, so it cannot detect the change. The header says widening the list fails this spec, which is incorrect. Only narrowing fails here. Widening is caught by the host persistence test "keeps partial command output and finalized text when resuming", which runs the real resume path. The current host strip list is correct, so this is a coverage gap for working behavior.

-// being copied here, so widening or narrowing it on the host side fails this spec.

In the host strip test, add an explicit assertion that
HOST_STRIPPED_PARTIAL_SAY_TYPES does not contain "command_output", since this
test’s command-output case bypasses the host strip. Update the surrounding

## Unit & State Tests (Vitest + JSDOM)

- When a regression can be proven with a component or webview integration test, keep it in `webview-ui`. Do not promote it to e2e just because the UI is hosted inside VS Code.

What: resumeTaskFromHistory() now collects the trailing partial `reasoning` and
`text` bubbles instead of dropping them outright, and after reading API history
re-adds each partial `text` bubble whose complete text already appears in the
last assistant turn, with `partial` cleared. Partial `reasoning` and unmatched
`text` bubbles are still discarded.

Why: CodeRabbit flagged that the strip discards text the model still retains.
The claim is reachable: recursivelyMakeRooRequests appends the assistant turn to
API history before it releases the streaming presenter that clears the bubble's
`partial` flag, so an abort landing between those two steps leaves a partial
bubble and a complete turn coexisting. Dropping the row erased text that is
still in the model's context.

The recommendation as written would have reintroduced Zoo-Code-Org#257: ChatView's streaming
memo returns true for any trailing `partial === true` row, so retaining the row
unchanged re-locks the resumed chat on "API Request..." with a queuing input.
Clearing `partial` keeps the text visible as finalized content and leaves the
input enabled, which is strictly better than dropping the row.

The comparison re-applies the streaming-time `<thinking>` strip, because
presentAssistantMessage strips that markup from the bubble but the API turn is
built from the raw accumulator.

Impact: an interrupted answer that already reached API history survives resume as
finalized text instead of vanishing. Orphaned partial text, partial reasoning,
and the Zoo-Code-Org#257 lock behavior are unchanged. The adjacent comment now states that
partial text can already have an API-history entry.

Minor · Potential issue · Heavy lift

The matcher requires the partial bubble to equal a whole API text block. If the API turn finished while the presenter still showed an earlier prefix, resume may discard that bubble despite the completed answer being in API history.

The resumed chat can omit an answer that remains in the model's context.

This can occur when: The stored bubble says "Half a sentence", but the last persisted assistant text block says "Half a sentence, completed" when the task is interrupted.

@myk1yt myk1yt changed the title fix(task): strip trailing partial text when resuming an interrupted task fix(task): reconcile dangling partial stream tails on resume (strip or restore finalized) Oct 30, 2026
@github-actions github-actions Bot added the awaiting-author PR is waiting for the author to address requested changes label Oct 30, 2026
… resume restore

What: hasAssistantTextTurnFor() now reads the final API message and returns false
unless its role is assistant, instead of scanning back to the last assistant turn
with findLast. A new Task.persistence case covers a trailing user turn.

Why: the previous check reached backwards past a newer user turn. That shape is
reachable: each iteration appends the request's user turn first, streams, then
throws at the post-stream abort guard before appending the assistant turn. An
abort at that guard therefore leaves API history ending on the user turn while a
say("text") bubble is still partial. findLast would then match an older assistant
turn and finalize a bubble whose text is absent from the newest turn the model
sees, laundering unsettled text into the transcript as if it were settled.

The stricter check cannot lose the legitimate restore case: there is no API
mutation between the assistant append and the presenter release, reasoning is
embedded inside the assistant message rather than appended as its own entry, and
flushPendingToolResultsToHistory returns early once abort is set, so the assistant
append really is the last entry whenever the restore should fire.

Impact: a partial bubble is restored only when the assistant turn that carries its
text is the last API message. Orphaned text, partial reasoning, and the Zoo-Code-Org#257 lock
behavior are unchanged, and the restore still always writes partial: false.

What: the "still streams if a restored text row is left partial" case now
builds its input by running the restore and putting `partial` back, instead of
hand-writing the same message the `it.each` arm already covers.

Why: the hand-written input was byte-identical to the `text` arm of the
streaming `it.each`, so the case asserted a duplicate of a shape already pinned
and never exercised the restore path it is named for. Deriving the input from
the restore output keeps the `partial: false` half pinned to the code that
clears it.

Impact: test-only. The case still fails when the restore leaves `partial` set,
and now also fails when the restore drops the row instead of re-adding it.

The proposed refactor is not required by the current behavior.

Both locations currently use the same normalization, and Task.persistence.spec.ts covers the <thinking> matching path. The suggested local helper would still duplicate the presenter’s implementation, so it would not prevent future divergence.

…ing tag

What: add two resumeTaskFromHistory cases for the partial-text restore, one
where the matching assistant turn also carries a tool_use block and one where
the matching text carries a closing </thinking> tag with its whitespace.

Why: the existing cases exercised only a text-only turn and only the opening
<thinking> tag, so the block-type filter and the closing-tag half of the strip
were unpinned against regression.

Impact: no production change; coverage only. Both cases were mutation-proven
against the code they cover.

## Visual Tests (Playwright Story Gallery)

### When a UI change needs a snapshot

Skip a visual test when the change is behavior-only (state transitions, handler wiring, validation) — those belong in Vitest. Visual tests are for what JSDOM cannot verify.

## Unit & State Tests (Vitest + JSDOM)

- When a regression can be proven with a component or webview integration test, keep it in `webview-ui`. Do not promote it to e2e just because the UI is hosted inside VS Code.

What: extract `stripThinkingTags` into `src/utils/text-normalization.ts` and
call it from both `presentAssistantMessage` (streaming bubble write) and
`hasAssistantTextTurnFor` (resume-time partial-bubble matching).

Why: the two-regex `<thinking>` strip was copy-pasted in three places. Resume
matching compares the stripped bubble text against the raw API accumulator, so
if either copy changed alone the two texts would stop comparing equal and
restored bubbles would silently stop being restored. Sharing one helper makes
that divergence a compile-time impossibility instead of a latent bug.

Impact: no behavior change; the helper is byte-identical to both former copies.
`text-normalization.spec.ts` pins each half of the strip separately, so a
single-regex change fails rather than passing silently.

Nitpick Add a closing-tag fixture with no whitespace before the tag.

109-113: Trivial · Maintainability & Code Quality · Quick win

Add a closing-tag fixture with no whitespace before the tag.

Both closing-tag fixtures in this block put a newline before </thinking>, so the optional whitespace in /\s?<\/thinking>/g is never exercised. If that whitespace became required (/\s<\/thinking>/g), all four cases would still pass, and Hello</thinking> could keep its closing tag in the presented text. The block comment states that a change to one regex must fail these tests. This fixture closes that gap.

Suggested test addition
 			{ name: "a closing tag", input: "Half a sentence\n</thinking>", expected: "Half a sentence" },
+ { name: "a closing tag with no whitespace", input: "Hello</thinking>", expected: "Hello" },

Review comment at @src/utils/__tests__/text-normalization.spec.ts around lines
109 - 113:
Add a closing-tag case to the tag-normalization test table that uses “Hello”
immediately followed by the closing thinking tag, with “Hello” as the expected
result. This exercises closing-tag removal when no whitespace precedes the tag.
