[Feat] Support custom MCP OAuth callback paths and WWW-Authenticate discovery - #2219
This PR lets Zoo Code connect to OAuth MCP servers that use a pre-registered client with a fixed callback path. It also finds protected resource metadata that is not at the RFC 9728 well-known URLs.
Changes:
McpOAuthClientProvider: oauth.redirectUri accepts any path except the root path. The loopback host, HTTP scheme, port, and no-query checks do not change. The provider sends the path to the callback server.
utils/callbackServer: startCallbackServer() has a new optional callbackPath parameter. The default is /callback, so the current callers do not change.
utils/oauth: when discoverOAuthProtectedResourceMetadata() fails, discovery sends one unauthenticated MCP initialize request. If the server returns 401 with a resource_metadata URL in WWW-Authenticate, discovery loads the metadata from that URL. If not, discovery fails as before.
Reviewers must check one trade-off. For a server without well-known metadata, the first discovery now sends one more initialize request. The existing non-OAuth cache stops repeated probes.
Test Procedure
Unit tests: cd src && npx vitest run services/mcp (207 tests pass). New tests cover:
a static client with the /mcp/oauth/callback path,
the rejection of a root-path redirectUri,
a callback server that resolves only on the configured path,
the WWW-Authenticate fallback, and a 401 response without resource_metadata.
pnpm --dir src run check-types, pnpm knip, and pnpm knip:production pass.
Manual discovery check against a real server that hosts its metadata under a path prefix: fetchOAuthAuthServerMetadata() returns the correct issuer and resource. The well-known URLs for this server return 404.

…iscovery
Some authorization servers register static clients with a callback path
other than /callback. The redirectUri option now accepts any path except
the root path. The local callback server listens on that path.
Some MCP servers host the protected resource metadata outside the RFC 9728
well-known URLs. When the well-known lookup fails, discovery now reads the
resource_metadata URL from the 401 WWW-Authenticate header.

📝 Summary
Summary by CodeRabbit
New Features
OAuth sign-in supports caller-configured callback paths for loopback redirect URIs and handles callback requests at the configured path.
When initial resource metadata discovery fails, discovery can retry using a valid, same-origin metadata URL supplied in an authentication challenge.
Bug Fixes
Loopback redirect URIs must specify a callback path; root-only paths are rejected.
Resource indicators are used only when valid and matching the requested server. Discovery lookups and fallback probes time out after five seconds, with timed-out requests aborted.
The MCP OAuth provider accepts configured non-root loopback callback paths. OAuth resource discovery can retry with a same-origin URL from a 401 challenge and validates the returned resource indicator.

When SDK discovery fails, the code sends an unauthenticated MCP initialize request. If a 401 response provides a valid same-origin resource_metadata URL, discovery retries with that URL. Lookup timeouts abort requests. Tests cover fallback, challenge parsing, and timeout cases.
The code retains a discovered resource indicator only when it matches the server resource. Tests cover matching and mismatching values and refresh resource values.

The Videos, Additional Notes, and Get in Touch template sections are not fully completed, but these omissions are non-critical and the description is otherwise complete.
Full details: Linked Issues check
Explanation
[#2218] McpOAuthClientProvider now accepts any non-root callback path and passes it to startCallbackServer. The loopback host, HTTP scheme, port, credential, query, and fragment checks remain. The callback server defaults to /callback. OAuth discovery now probes after a failed well-known lookup, reads a Bearer resource_metadata URL from the 401 challenge, and retries metadata discovery without redirects. Tests cover custom paths, root-path rejection, challenge fallback, invalid challenges, failures, and redirects.
Full details: Out of Scope Changes check
Explanation
The changed files support [#2218]. The timeout and abort changes prevent fallback after a timed-out well-known lookup and bound the new probe and metadata fetch. The resource-indicator validation applies to the same protected-resource discovery flow and prevents a mismatched indicator from being sent. Same-origin and no-redirect checks protect the new header-supplied metadata fetch. No unrelated feature or file change is shown.
Full details: Security Boundaries
Explanation
The prior redirect concern is addressed. The changed fallback accepts a parsed resource_metadata URL only when its origin equals the configured MCP server origin (src/services/mcp/utils/oauth.ts:97-105), and the SDK fetch receives redirect: "manual", so a 3xx response is not followed. The initialize probe also uses redirect: "manual" (:164-186). The callback path is derived only after loopback, HTTP, port, credential, query, fragment, and root-path validation, then matched exactly by the local callback server (McpOAuthClientProvider.ts:673-696, callbackServer.ts:86-96). No changed path bypasses these security boundaries or leaks secrets or PII. Prior failure addressed: oauth.ts:101-105 now passes redirect: "manual" to the header-metadata SDK lookup, and the probe at :181-183 also disables redirects. The added redirect test confirms the probe makes no redirect-target request.
Full details: Persistence Integrity
Explanation
No changed persistence path exists. The PR changes callback-path validation and in-memory callback-server routing in McpOAuthClientProvider.ts and callbackServer.ts, plus OAuth metadata fetch and parsing in oauth.ts. It adds no persistence writes, storage transactions, defaults propagated to persisted consumers, or rollback paths. Existing token and secret-storage operations are outside the changed hunks.
Full details: Lifecycle Resource Cleanup
Explanation
No changed lifecycle path introduces a leak or duplicate work. The callback-path changes only route requests through the configured path; existing timeout, response-finish, error, and provider-close paths still close the listener. OAuth discovery clears each withDiscoveryTimeout timer in finally, aborts timed-out SDK requests, applies a bounded probe timeout, and cancels the probe response body. Provider failure and disposal paths call stopCallbackServer.
Full details: Regression Evidence
Explanation
The new probe timeout lacks focused coverage. probeResourceMetadataUrl now uses AbortSignal.timeout(DISCOVERY_TIMEOUT_MS) at src/services/mcp/utils/oauth.ts:164-186, but the added tests cover probe rejection and redirects only (oauth.spec.ts:144-178). No test hangs the probe, advances the five-second timeout, or verifies that the request aborts and discovery returns null.
Resolution
Add a focused oauth.spec.ts test that makes the probe request remain pending, uses fake timers to advance 5 seconds, and asserts the probe signal is aborted, no fallback metadata lookup starts, and fetchOAuthAuthServerMetadata() resolves to null.

A quoted auth-param can contain an escaped quote or a comma (RFC 9110
§5.6.4), which broke the split before a later resource_metadata. The
header is now split by a loop that tracks quoted strings and escapes.
An invalid resource_metadata URL no longer stops parsing, so a later
Bearer challenge with a valid URL is still used.
Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
The WWW-Authenticate fallback fetched any resource_metadata URL, so a
server could direct the client to a loopback, private, or other host.
It now fetches only metadata on the MCP server's own origin. Servers
with cross-origin metadata keep the behavior they had before the
fallback existed.
A well-known lookup that timed out may still be running, so it no
longer starts the fallback.
Adds tests for a failed probe, a failed or timed-out fallback lookup,
no fallback after a timed-out first lookup, and rejected destinations.
Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
Security Boundaries: the fallback now fetches resource_metadata only on the MCP server's own origin. A 401 header can no longer direct the client to a loopback, private, or other host. Servers with cross-origin metadata keep the behavior they had before this PR.
Lifecycle: a well-known lookup that timed out no longer starts the fallback.
Regression Evidence: added tests for a failed probe, a failed fallback lookup, a timed-out fallback lookup (abort plus null), no fallback after a timed-out first lookup, and cross-origin and loopback rejection.
Stop the initialize probe from following cross-origin redirects.
The probe in src/services/mcp/utils/oauth.ts:159-180 calls fetch(serverUrl, { method: "POST", ... }) without a redirect option, so the default "follow" mode applies. When the configured server answers with 307 or 308, the probe can follow the redirect to a loopback, private, or other-origin host and send the initialize body there. The origin check at oauth.ts:98-100 validates only the WWW-Authenticate URL. It does not inspect this redirect chain.
The impact is bounded. The probe sends no Authorization or cookie header, the response body is discarded, and AbortSignal.timeout(DISCOVERY_TIMEOUT_MS) limits the whole chain to 5 seconds. The PR states that header-supplied fallback must not direct requests to loopback or private hosts, so the probe can break that boundary.
Correct the probe, not the metadata fetch. Keep same-origin redirect following. redirect: "manual" alone is not a safe fix: a same-origin 307 would then return a non-401 response, and the fallback would be lost. fetchWithinOrigin is @internal in the SDK (dist/esm/shared/transport.js:82), so it should not be imported.

Do not require strict resource-URL identity solely to enforce RFC 9728 §3.3, because that rejects supported MCP servers that advertise an ancestor resource. Check that validation still rejects cross-origin resource identifiers; this compatibility exception does not authorize cross-origin acceptance.

The same-origin check covered only the resource_metadata URL. A 3xx
response could still lead the initialize probe or the metadata fetch to
a loopback, private, or other host. Both requests now use
redirect: "manual", so a redirect fails the fallback. Well-known lookups
are unchanged.

Addressed the remaining Security Boundaries check in 6756e2f: the initialize probe and the header-supplied metadata fetch no longer follow redirects (redirect: "manual"). A 3xx response fails the fallback, so a redirect cannot lead off-origin. Well-known lookups are unchanged.

Closes: #2218
Description
This PR lets Zoo Code connect to OAuth MCP servers that use a pre-registered client with a fixed callback path. It also finds protected resource metadata that is not at the RFC 9728 well-known URLs.
Changes:
McpOAuthClientProvider:oauth.redirectUriaccepts any path except the root path. The loopback host, HTTP scheme, port, and no-query checks do not change. The provider sends the path to the callback server.utils/callbackServer:startCallbackServer()has a new optionalcallbackPathparameter. The default is/callback, so the current callers do not change.utils/oauth: whendiscoverOAuthProtectedResourceMetadata()fails, discovery sends one unauthenticated MCPinitializerequest. If the server returns 401 with aresource_metadataURL inWWW-Authenticate, discovery loads the metadata from that URL. If not, discovery fails as before.Reviewers must check one trade-off. For a server without well-known metadata, the first discovery now sends one more
initializerequest. The existing non-OAuth cache stops repeated probes.Test Procedure
cd src && npx vitest run services/mcp(207 tests pass). New tests cover:/mcp/oauth/callbackpath,redirectUri,WWW-Authenticatefallback, and a 401 response withoutresource_metadata.pnpm --dir src run check-types,pnpm knip, andpnpm knip:productionpass.fetchOAuthAuthServerMetadata()returns the correct issuer and resource. The well-known URLs for this server return 404.Example configuration:
