Validation and rollback src/core/webview/ClineProvider.ts, src/core/webview/__tests__/ClineProvider.apiHandlerRebuild.spec.ts, src/core/webview/__tests__/ClineProvider.spec.ts |
The upsert path checks the organization allow-list before writing and snapshots state for restoration after failures. Tests cover rejected and accepted profiles, restoration after activation failure, and deletion of newly created profiles. |
Priority:
Estimated code review effort: 3 (Moderate) | ~20 minutes
Change: Bug fix · Severity of issue fixed: Medium
Merge Risk:

A failed profile change can alter a task’s configuration or leave a mode pointing to a deleted profile. Complete rollback before merging unless these failure-path risks are explicitly accepted.

Explanation
The description links issue
#2069and explains the problem, implementation, rollback behavior, known mode-binding limitation, and test coverage. It does not reproduce the template headings or checklist, and it does not explicitly address documentation impact, but the required technical information is present.
Full details: Out of Scope Changes check
-
Explanation
The production changes implement the validation and rollback requirements for issue [
#2069]. The added tests cover allow-list rejection, accepted profiles, rollback, and deletion of a newly created profile. The provider-settings-manager mock updates support those tests. No unrelated production change is shown in the reviewed diff.
Full details: Security Boundaries
-
Explanation
No concrete security-boundary failure is introduced. In the changed
upsertProviderProfilepath,ProfileValidator.isProfileAllowed(providerSettings, organizationAllowList)runs beforesnapshotProviderProfileStateorpersistProviderProfile; disallowed webview profiles therefore do not reachsaveConfig, activation, or context propagation. The validator checks the provider and provider-specific model identifier. The remaining changes restore prior state after persistence or activation failures and do not expose secrets or add an approval bypass.
Full details: Lifecycle Resource Cleanup
-
Explanation
No changed lifecycle path leaks a resource or duplicates work. The new rollback path rebuilds the current task API handler only when activation was requested.
Task.updateApiConfigurationretires replaced handlers, andTask.disposealso disposes current and retired handlers. The mutation queue continues timed-out upserts intentionally and serializes the work, so the changed code does not create overlapping retries or duplicate listeners, watchers, timers, or tasks.

Full details: Linked Issues check
-
Explanation
Issue [
#2069] requires rollback of every touched value, including the mode binding.restoreProviderProfileStatecallssetModeConfigonly whensnapshot.modeConfigIdis present. When the previous mode had no binding, it does not clear the binding created by the failed upsert. The PR description confirms this remaining state mismatch. The allow-list gate and other rollback steps are implemented, but this requirement remains unmet.Resolution
Add a supported mode-binding clear or delete operation. Call it when
snapshot.modeConfigIdis absent. Add a regression test for a failed upsert that starts with no mode binding.
Full details: Persistence Integrity
-
Explanation
The changed rollback path can leave a persisted mode binding after a failed upsert.
restoreProviderProfileStateskips mode restoration whensnapshot.modeConfigIdis undefined (ClineProvider.ts:1972-1974). However, persistProviderProfilewritesmodeApiConfigs[mode] = idthroughsetModeConfig(ClineProvider.ts:2117-2122), andProviderSettingsManager.setModeConfigcreates or updates that map entry (ProviderSettingsManager.ts:546-557). If another activation write fails aftersetModeConfigsucceeds, an initially unbound mode retains the failed profile ID. The restore reports no failure, sopartialStateremains false and the generic error is shown. A later mode switch can activate the failed profile. An emptymodeApiConfigsis valid persisted/imported state, so this is a plausible triggering scenario. The added tests cover a prior binding and do not cover an initially unbound mode.Resolution
Add a ProviderSettingsManager operation that removes a mode binding, or restore the complete mode-binding map. Invoke it when
snapshot.modeConfigIdis undefined. If removal or map restoration fails, setpartialStateand show the partial-update error. Add a regression test that starts with an unbound mode, makes activation fail aftersetModeConfigwrites, and verifies that the mode remains unbound.
Full details: Regression Evidence
-
Explanation
The PR adds a distinct
upsertProviderProfilepartial-rollback path atClineProvider.ts:1909-1933: a restore failure setspartialStateand showserrors.update_profile_model_partial. The new upsert tests cover successful rollback and allow-list rejection, but none makes an upsert restore operation fail or asserts the partial-state message. The existing matching test atapiHandlerRebuild.spec.ts:731-740coversupdateProfileModel, which uses a different rollback path.Resolution
Add a focused
upsertProviderProfiletest that causes activation to fail and causes a rollback operation to fail, such as makingsetModeConfigreject for both activation and restoration. Assert that the other rollback steps still run and thatvscode.window.showErrorMessagereceiveserrors.update_profile_model_partial.

Assert the exact previous active profile name.
The deletion rollback is already covered by ClineProvider.apiHandlerRebuild.spec.ts. The remaining assertion is weak: it accepts any value other than "test-config". Assert the exact previous active name, "current-config".

Remove a newly created mode binding during rollback.
When activate is true and the mode has no previous binding, persistProviderProfile starts setModeConfig(mode, id) with the other activation writes. If another activation write rejects, Promise.allSettled throws after the mode write can succeed. restoreProviderProfileState skips mode restoration when snapshot.modeConfigId is unset. The rollback can then delete a newly created profile while leaving the mode bound to its deleted ID.
Add a manager operation that removes the mode key, and call it for an unset snapshot.

Problem
ClineProvider.upsertProviderProfile(the path behind the webview'supsertApiConfiguration) saved and activated whatever profile it was given: noProfileValidator.isProfileAllowedcheck, and a failure aftersaveConfig(mode binding, context settings, task handler) left storage, currentApiConfigName, the mode binding, in-memory settings and the task handler out of sync.updateProfileModelalready had both guards; this bringsupsertProviderProfilein line.Change
