Refs #2083 (prompt half only; does not close it)

Problem

The system prompt only printed Default Shell: <path>. On Windows with the inline terminal, commands run through COMSPEC (cmd.exe), and a model (or rule files) written for bash gets cmd semantics silently, e.g. ; is not a command separator in cmd, so dotnet build x.slnx; echo %ERRORLEVEL% passes the rest of the line to MSBuild.

Change

New pure describeShellDialect(shellPath) (utils/shellDialect.ts). When execute_command is available and the shell is cmd.exe or PowerShell, the SYSTEM INFORMATION section gains a Shell Syntax: line stating the dialect and its main differences (chaining, variables, exit codes). POSIX shells get no extra line, so their prompts (and snapshots) are unchanged.

Not covered

Tests

shellDialect.spec.ts (cmd/PowerShell named, ; warning, POSIX shells untouched) and system-info.spec.ts (line present for cmd with execute_command, absent without it and for POSIX). core/prompts and utils suites (1,127 tests) and check-types pass.

📝 Summary

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features
    • System information now includes the detected default shell.
    • When command execution is available, Windows Command Prompt and PowerShell environments receive shell-specific syntax guidance, including command chaining, variables, and exit-status handling.
  • Improvements
    • Shell-specific guidance is omitted when command execution is unavailable or the detected shell is not a supported Windows shell.
    • Windows shell environments are recognized across Windows- and POSIX-style paths, including case variations.

The system information prompt now includes syntax guidance for supported Windows shells when execute_command is available. A new helper recognizes cmd.exe and PowerShell. Other shells do not produce dialect guidance.

Changes: Shell Syntax Guidance

Layer / File(s) Summary
Detect and describe shell dialects
src/utils/shellDialect.ts, src/utils/__tests__/shellDialect.spec.ts
The helper recognizes cmd.exe and PowerShell executable names and returns shell-specific syntax guidance. Tests cover recognized shells and undefined results for POSIX and WSL paths.
Add shell syntax to system information
src/core/prompts/sections/system-info.ts, src/core/prompts/sections/__tests__/system-info.spec.ts
The prompt adds a shell syntax line when a supported dialect is detected and execute_command is available. Tests cover cmd.exe, unavailable command execution, and POSIX shells.

Full details: Description check

Explanation

The description is mostly complete. It references issue #2083, explains the problem and implementation, defines out-of-scope items, and lists tests and results. It does not reproduce the template headings or checklist, but the missing sections are non-critical for review.

Full details: Security Boundaries

Explanation

The changed production paths only classify the existing shell path and add static syntax guidance to the system prompt. describeShellDialect performs basename matching and returns fixed strings; it does not execute input, access secrets or PII, or alter approval and allowlist controls. system-info.ts retains the existing shell-path display and gates the new line on the existing execute_command policy.

Full details: Persistence Integrity

Explanation

No changed persistence path exists. The PR only adds synchronous shell-dialect detection and prompt text generation in describeShellDialect and getSystemInfoSection; it performs no writes, persistence operations, rollback, or default propagation to a persisted consumer.

Full details: Lifecycle Resource Cleanup

Explanation

No changed lifecycle path exists. The production changes only compute a shell path, derive a static dialect string, and append prompt text. describeShellDialect performs pure string parsing. getSystemInfoSection does not add listeners, watchers, providers, timers, tasks, or cancellation/disposal handling, and no changed path can duplicate work after restart or cancellation.

Full details: Regression Evidence

Explanation

PowerShell prompt output still lacks focused integration coverage. The changed system-info.ts:37-42 calls describeShellDialect(getShell()) when execute_command is available, so a PowerShell path must produce the visible Shell Syntax line. system-info.spec.ts:106-126 covers only cmd.exe, unavailable-tool, and POSIX branches. shellDialect.spec.ts tests the utility in isolation, but no test verifies the PowerShell path through getSystemInfoSection. A regression in that wiring could pass.

Resolution

Add a getSystemInfoSection test that mocks getShell() to a PowerShell path with execute_command enabled. Assert the Shell Syntax line and key PowerShell guidance, including ;, $env:VAR, $?, and $LASTEXITCODE.

Assert syntax tokens for each dialect.

The name assertion can pass when the syntax guidance is removed. The existing cmd.exe test covers only the semicolon warning. Add assertions for command chaining, variables, and exit-code guidance for both dialects.

🎯 Functional Correctness | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick win

Distinguish cmdlet success from native exit codes.

If a generated command runs Get-ChildItem or another cmdlet, $LASTEXITCODE does not report its failure. It can retain an earlier native command’s exit code, so the model can treat a failed cmdlet as successful. State that $LASTEXITCODE applies to native commands and that $? reports the last command’s success. (learn.microsoft.com)

The system prompt only named the shell path, so rules and habits written for
bash silently ran with cmd semantics on Windows. Add a Shell Syntax line for
cmd.exe and PowerShell (when execute_command is available) covering command
chaining, variables and exit codes.

Assert the cmd.exe behavior guidance.

The cmd.exe description includes expansion timing and same-line success guidance, but the test checks only syntax tokens. Add behavior-focused assertions for both statements.

Suggested test assertions
 	it("warns that ';' does not chain commands in cmd.exe", () => {
 		expect(describeShellDialect("C:\\Windows\\System32\\cmd.exe")).toContain("`;` is not a separator")
 	})

+	it("explains cmd.exe expansion timing for same-line success checks", () => {
+		const description = describeShellDialect("cmd.exe")
+
+ expect(description).toContain("`%ERRORLEVEL%` expands before a chained line runs")
+		expect(description).toContain("use `&&` or `||` for same-line success checks")
+	})

Review comment at @src/utils/__tests__/shellDialect.spec.ts at line 4:
Add behavior-focused assertions in the `shellDialect.spec.ts` tests for
`describeShellDialect`, verifying that the cmd.exe description explains
`%ERRORLEVEL%` expands before a chained line runs and recommends `&&` or `||`
for same-line success checks.
