[Fix] Sidebar stuck on spinner while a large task history loads - #2114
On startup the extension scans every task's history_item.json (TaskHistoryStore.initialize() → reconcile({ forceRefresh: true })). getStateToPostToWebview awaited that scan unconditionally, and webviewDidLaunch always posted the full state, so with a large history the webview never received its first state message and stayed on the loading spinner until the scan finished.
Fix
getStateToPostToWebview only awaits taskHistoryStore.initialized when task history is included in the result.
webviewDidLaunch: if the store is still loading, post state without task history immediately (the webview already supports this via postStateToWebviewWithoutTaskHistory), then post the full state once the scan completes. If it is already loaded, behavior is unchanged.
TaskHistoryStore exposes a synchronous isInitialized getter.
Not covered
This makes the UI render independently of the scan; it does not make the scan itself faster (it still reads one small file per task, sequentially) or change what the report calls an unresponsive extension host. I could not reproduce the multi-minute stall locally. The task list appears once the scan completes.
Tests
webviewMessageHandler.spec.ts: launch with a loaded store posts full state once; launch with a slow store renders first, then posts full state after it finishes.
ClineProvider.spec.ts: state without history builds while the store never finishes loading.
TaskHistoryStore.spec.ts: isInitialized.
Full src suite (11,006 tests) and check-types pass.

TaskHistoryStore now exposes whether initialization has completed. Webview state generation can omit task history while initialization is pending. On launch, the handler posts state without history first, then posts full state after initialization.
TaskHistoryStore exposes isInitialized and sets it when initialize() completes. Tests check the flag and the initialized promise.

State generation waits for task history only when requested. On launch, the handler posts state without history if initialization is pending, then posts full state after initialization. Settings updates select state based on initialization status. Tests cover these paths.

Explanation
The description identifies issue #2095, explains the cause and implementation, states scope limits, and lists focused tests and validation results. It omits several auxiliary template sections, including the checklist and documentation or visual snapshot details, but the core description is complete.
Full details: Linked Issues check
Explanation
Issue [#2095] requires startup rendering without waiting for task-history reconciliation. The PR satisfies this requirement. getStateToPostToWebview({ includeTaskHistory: false }) no longer awaits taskHistoryStore.initialized. webviewDidLaunch posts state without history while the store loads, then posts full state after initialized resolves. The loaded-store path remains unchanged. Tests cover both launch paths, state construction during an unfinished scan, and isInitialized. The issue's scan-performance suggestions are not required to satisfy the startup-rendering requirement.
Full details: Out of Scope Changes check
Explanation
The changed production code stays within issue [#2095]. The isInitialized getter supports readiness checks. The provider change avoids an unnecessary history wait. The launch and updateSettings changes prevent related state posts from blocking on the same scan. The added tests verify these paths. No unrelated production behavior appears in the reviewed diff.
Full details: Security Boundaries
Explanation
No changed path meets a security failure condition. TaskHistoryStore.isInitialized only exposes lifecycle state. ClineProvider.getStateToPostToWebview now skips task-history loading only when includeTaskHistory is false, and postStateToWebviewWithoutTaskHistory removes taskHistory before posting. webviewDidLaunch and updateSettings only choose between that existing history-free post and the existing full-state post; they do not execute new input, expose new secrets or PII, or change approval or allowlist checks.
Full details: Persistence Integrity
Explanation
No changed persistence path meets the failure conditions. The production changes add an initialization flag, conditionally wait before reading history, and post webview state. The detached continuation only posts state and catches posting errors; it does not write persisted data. Settings persistence remains awaited through contextProxy.setValue, and the changed TaskHistoryStore code does not alter its atomic writes, rollback, or mutation paths.
Full details: Regression Evidence
Explanation
Two changed error branches still lack focused coverage. In webviewMessageHandler.ts:605-607, the deferred postStateToWebview() rejection is caught and logged, but the launch tests cover only successful resolution (webviewMessageHandler.spec.ts:3074-3095). In TaskHistoryStore.ts:147-150, initialization errors execute the new completion path, set isInitialized, and resolve initialized; TaskHistoryStore.spec.ts:56-81 covers only successful initialization. No Playwright snapshot is required because no webview component code changed.
Resolution
Add a launch test that makes the deferred postStateToWebview() reject after initialized resolves, then assert provider.log receives Task history state update error and the handler produces no unhandled rejection. Add a TaskHistoryStore test that forces an initialization-stage failure, asserts initialize() rejects, isInitialized becomes true, and initialized resolves.
Full details: Lifecycle Resource Cleanup
Explanation
The prior lifecycle failure remains in the current head. In the changed webviewDidLaunch branch, each launch while taskHistoryStore.isInitialized is false attaches a new .then(() => provider.postStateToWebview()) continuation at src/core/webview/webviewMessageHandler.ts:599-607. Sidebar disposal calls clearWebviewResources() at ClineProvider.ts:1125-1133, but that method only disposes webview subscriptions; it does not cancel or invalidate this continuation. A sidebar close/reopen or repeated launch before history initialization therefore leaves the old continuation active. When initialization completes, each continuation performs full state generation and postMessageToWebview() uses the provider's current view, so it can post stale work to the replacement view and duplicate full-state posts.
Resolution
Track the pending history-completion continuation by webview/provider generation. Invalidate it during sidebar cleanup and provider disposal. Before posting, verify that the generation is current and the provider is not disposed. Coalesce repeated launches so only one deferred full-state update exists.

Assert isInitialized while initialization is pending.
Hold the reconciliation scan with a deferred gate, assert store.isInitialized is still false, then release the gate and assert that it becomes true. The current test samples only before calling initialize() and after it returns, so it does not prove the in-flight state. This is required by the test guidance and is more than a nitpick.

Assert the staged state payloads.
The launch tests use vi.fn() methods, so they verify only call counts. They do not verify that the first post omits task history, that the later post contains the expected history, or that the posts occur in that order. Add a provider-backed launch test that captures both posted states and asserts these properties. Existing provider tests cover the helper methods separately, but no existing test covers this launch sequence.

Keep follow-up settings state posts responsive.
The initial render is not regressed. However, updateSettings posts its state only after applying the setting, and that post waits for task-history initialization. The settings response can therefore remain pending for the full scan.
Use the history-free post while the store is uninitialized. Keep the scheduled full post after initialization.
