fix(webview): detect dead webview renderer via heartbeat and auto-reload - #1715
On very long sessions the webview can turn into the unrecoverable "gray screen of death". The webview renderer process crashes. This is a platform-level failure. A React ErrorBoundary already wraps the app, but it cannot catch a dead renderer. Before this PR, the only fix was to restart VS Code.
This PR adds heartbeat-based crash detection and automatic recovery.
Webview side (webview-ui/src/App.tsx)
The webview posts a webviewHeartbeat message on mount and every 30s.
The effect clears its interval on unmount.
Extension side (ClineProvider)
updateWebviewHeartbeat() runs for each heartbeat. It restarts the grace window and resets the recovery attempt count.
startWebviewWatchdog() runs from resolveWebviewView. It ticks every 60s. A second start clears the old interval first.
If the view is visible and no heartbeat arrived for more than 90s, the watchdog logs one line and calls reloadWebviewForRecovery().
reloadWebviewForRecovery() builds new HTML (new nonce) and assigns it to this provider's own webview.html. This forces VS Code to reload only this webview. It works for the sidebar view and the tab panel. Other webviews in the window are not affected.
Recovery stops after 3 attempts. A heartbeat or a view replacement resets the count.
The watchdog stops in dispose() and in clearWebviewResources().
Safety guards
Hidden webviews throttle timers. Both visibility listeners (onDidChangeViewState and onDidChangeVisibility) restart the grace window when the view becomes visible.
If a tick arrives more than 1.5 times the tick interval late, the host was suspended or blocked. The watchdog restarts the grace window and does not reload.
Building the HTML is async. After the await, recovery does not assign HTML if any of these is true:
the provider is disposed
the view was disposed or replaced (recovery epoch changed)
the view is not the same view object
a heartbeat or grace reset arrived (heartbeat revision changed)
the view is no longer visible
Only one recovery can run for each epoch. A stale recovery does not block the recovery of a replacement view.
Refactor with no behavior change
The HTML selection (HMR in development, packaged HTML otherwise) moved from resolveWebviewView to a new getWebviewHtml() helper. Recovery uses the same helper.
Task execution is not affected. It runs in the extension host. Only the UI reloads.
Test Procedure
src/core/webview/__tests__/ClineProvider.spec.ts has a new webview heartbeat watchdog block (26 tests, fake timers). It covers these cases:
A fresh heartbeat does not reload. A stale visible view reloads with new HTML.
A hidden stale view does not reload. Becoming visible restarts the grace window.
A tick gap that shows a host suspend restarts the grace window.
Recovery stops after 3 attempts. A heartbeat refills the count.
Recovery does not stack. A disposed provider, a replaced view, a heartbeat, or a hidden view during the HTML await cancels the pending reload.
Disposal stops the watchdog. A second resolveWebviewView does not stack intervals.
The sidebar view and the tab panel both work.
webview-ui/src/__tests__/App.spec.tsx has 2 new tests: a heartbeat on mount and every 30s, and no heartbeats after unmount.

A recovery reload restarts the webview page. Unsent composer text, pending image attachments, and scroll position are lost. Task state is safe because it lives in the extension host. This is better than the old result (gray screen, then a full VS Code restart). Follow-up idea: save the draft into extension state before the reload.
Each heartbeat resets the attempt count. A renderer that starts, sends one heartbeat, and then dies again is reloaded again about every 2 to 3 minutes. The cap of 3 bounds only a renderer that never starts. Follow-up idea: reset the count only after a sustained healthy period.
When the cap is reached, the watchdog stops without a log line. Follow-up idea: log once.
If building the HTML fails, the failure is logged. It does not count toward the cap, so the watchdog retries on the next tick.
The timestamp field of webviewHeartbeat is not read. The extension uses its own clock.
This PR mitigates the crash. The memory growth on very long sessions stays tracked by #630 / #1542.

Webviews recover automatically when a visible view stops responding.
Recovery is paused for hidden views and canceled if the view becomes active, is replaced, or is disposed.
Automatic recovery is limited to three attempts, with the limit reset after sustained activity.
Sidebar task state is preserved during host recovery, and closing an older tab no longer clears its replacement.
If recovery fails, options are provided to reload the VS Code window or view logs.
If the local development server does not respond within five seconds, the built extension interface is used instead.

The watchdog fires reloadWebviewForRecovery() without tracking it, so the
recovery could reassign webview.html after the provider was disposed or the
watched view was disposed/replaced while the HTML was being generated.
Track the operation with an epoch token: capture it before the await and
bail out before assigning webview.html when the provider is disposed, the
epoch changed, or this.view no longer references the captured view.
clearWebviewResources() bumps the epoch so sidebar view disposal and
provider disposal invalidate any in-flight recovery.
Also add fake-timer watchdog coverage for the tab-panel branch
(WebviewPanel shape): a hidden tab does not reload, the
onDidChangeViewState callback resets the heartbeat grace window when the
tab becomes visible, and a stale heartbeat reloads a visible tab.
Address two minor review threads on the watchdog spec:
- Cover the reload rejection path: stub the recovery HTML regeneration to
reject and assert the failure is logged and webview.html is untouched.
- Assert the watchdog interval was actually scheduled before the sidebar
disposal test disposes the view, so the post-disposal null check proves
the watchdog was stopped rather than never having started.
@coderabbitai review — head is now ba72a4e. Both warnings addressed: (1) Regression Evidence — tab-panel branch coverage added (WebviewPanel-shaped mock: hidden tab no reload, becoming visible resets grace, stale heartbeat reloads). (2) Lifecycle Resource Cleanup — reloadWebviewForRecovery now captures an epoch token and bails without assigning webview.html when the provider is disposed, the epoch changed, or the view was replaced; covered by 3 mid-recovery fake-timer tests. The two minor test threads also landed (reload-rejection reinterpreted onto the current path — the old command no longer exists; watchdog-active precondition assertion). 175/175 ClineProvider tests pass.
What: record the wall-clock reading of the previous watchdog tick; a tick
arriving more than 1.5x the interval late restarts the heartbeat grace
window instead of counting the gap against the renderer.
Why: during system sleep both the extension-host interval and the
webview heartbeat timer pause, but Date.now() keeps advancing. The first
post-wake tick then saw a stale heartbeat on a live renderer and
reloaded it, discarding unsent composer text and pending attachments.
Impact: no false recovery reload after wake from sleep; the watchdog
still reloads when the heartbeat genuinely goes stale (regression test
advances the clock past the stale threshold between ticks and asserts
no HTML reassignment, then asserts a real stale period still reloads).
Rebased onto current main (2681ccb) and addressed the remaining review thread.
Changes since last push:
Merged upstream/main; resolved conflicts with fix(webview): route code actions to the last active chat #1946 (webview focus tracker) in ClineProvider.ts, App.tsx, App.spec.tsx, and vscode-extension-host.ts keeping both sides' behavior (heartbeat watchdog + webviewDidFocus routing). Two obsolete-view tests were updated to model VS Code's multi-listener webview events now that the focus tracker also subscribes.
ff9aa8a: fixed the unresolved CodeRabbit finding — the heartbeat watchdog no longer treats the wall-clock gap after a system sleep as a dead renderer; a tick arriving >1.5x late restarts the grace window. Regression test included.

Description
On very long sessions the webview can turn into the unrecoverable "gray screen of death". The webview renderer process crashes. This is a platform-level failure. A React
ErrorBoundaryalready wraps the app, but it cannot catch a dead renderer. Before this PR, the only fix was to restart VS Code.This PR adds heartbeat-based crash detection and automatic recovery.
Webview side (
webview-ui/src/App.tsx)webviewHeartbeatmessage on mount and every 30s.Extension side (
ClineProvider)updateWebviewHeartbeat()runs for each heartbeat. It restarts the grace window and resets the recovery attempt count.startWebviewWatchdog()runs fromresolveWebviewView. It ticks every 60s. A second start clears the old interval first.reloadWebviewForRecovery().reloadWebviewForRecovery()builds new HTML (new nonce) and assigns it to this provider's ownwebview.html.
