fix(api): preserve provider reasoning across tool calls - #1666
Convert persisted reasoning and thinking blocks into Bedrock Converse reasoningContent instead of the literal [Unknown Block Type] placeholder, for Bedrock models that set preserveReasoning (Kimi K2 Thinking, MiniMax M2). For other Bedrock models, including Claude, these blocks are dropped. This matches how Task already strips plain reasoning blocks, and covers signed thinking blocks, which bypass that filter after a mid-task provider switch.
Replay reasoning to Bedrock without a signature. Bedrock does not capture its own signatures yet, so any stored signature was issued by another provider (MiniMax) and would fail Bedrock's verification. signature is optional in the Converse API.
Capture MiniMax signature_delta events so the task history can store valid signed thinking blocks for the next tool-loop request.
Sanitize MiniMax requests with the existing Anthropic block allowlist: valid signed thinking is preserved while legacy internal reasoning blocks are removed.
MiniMax's Anthropic-compatible API requires replaying the complete signed thinking block unchanged. Capturing its streamed signature preserves continuity without sending an unsupported internal block shape.
Results: all Bedrock and MiniMax provider/transform suites passed (265 tests after the review follow-ups); type checking and ESLint passed. Suppression counts did not increase. No live Bedrock or MiniMax request was made.

Summary
Summary by CodeRabbit
New Features
MiniMax retains streamed reasoning and its associated signature when available.
Bedrock can preserve reasoning in supported conversation continuations; models without reasoning preservation continue to omit it.
Bug Fixes
MiniMax requests omit unsupported unsigned reasoning while retaining supported content.
Thought signatures no longer carry over from an earlier message when a new one has none.
Reasoning-only Bedrock messages remain valid when reasoning is filtered out.
Bedrock now converts supported reasoning and thinking blocks during history replay when the model enables preserveReasoning. MiniMax filters unsupported message blocks and captures streamed thought signatures.
The converter maps reasoning and thinking text to Bedrock reasoning content when preservation is enabled and the conversation continues within a tool loop. Otherwise, it filters those blocks and inserts placeholder text when conversion leaves no content. Thinking signatures are not forwarded. Tests cover preserved and filtered blocks.
The Bedrock provider enables reasoning preservation only when modelInfo.preserveReasoning is exactly true. A history-replay test checks that MiniMax thinking text is included and Claude thinking text is omitted.
MiniMax filters non-Anthropic blocks before requests, resets and captures streamed thought signatures, and exposes the latest signature through getThoughtSignature(). Tests cover signature capture, reset between requests, and filtering legacy reasoning blocks.
Zoo-Code-Org/Zoo-Code#2199: The change preserves reasoning during Bedrock and MiniMax history replay; manual control for LiteLLM local models remains outside its scope.
Zoo-Code-Org/Zoo-Code#1891: The change preserves earlier reasoning for Bedrock and MiniMax during tool-call requests, but does not address other prompt-cache causes or OpenAI-compatible providers.
Merge Risk: Minimal · up to 38043
Reasoning replay now respects the new-user boundary, filtered reasoning uses a nonblank fallback, and tests cover signature reset and omission. No actionable merge-blocking issue remains after normal checks.

Explanation
Issue #1665 coding requirements are met at head 38043af.
Bedrock [#1665]: convertToBedrockConverseMessages now accepts preserveReasoning (default false). src/api/providers/bedrock.ts passes preserveReasoning: true only when modelInfo.preserveReasoning === true. When enabled, persisted reasoning and thinking blocks become Converse reasoningContent text without signatures. When disabled, these blocks are filtered out. The "[Unknown Block Type]" placeholder path no longer applies to these blocks. Reasoning-only turns receive REASONING_ONLY_PLACEHOLDER instead of an empty content array. Tests in bedrock-converse-format.spec.ts and bedrock.spec.ts cover preserved and dropped cases, including minimax.minimax-m2 and Claude Sonnet 4.5.
MiniMax [#1665]: MiniMaxHandler.createMessage applies filterNonAnthropicBlocks to the merged messages before messages.create, so legacy internal reasoning blocks are removed. The handler captures signature_delta into lastThoughtSignature, resets it at the start of each call, and exposes it through getThoughtSignature(). src/core/task/apiConversationHistory.ts (unchanged in this PR) reads getThoughtSignature() and prepends a signed thinking block for Anthropic-protocol providers. Tests in minimax.spec.ts cover thinking deltas, signature capture, signature reset on the next request, and legacy reasoning removal with signed thinking retained.
Claude signature capture is excluded, as #1665 and the PR description state (tracked in #1837).
Unresolved uncertainty: the MiniMax signed-block persistence depends on getApiProtocol returning "anthropic" for the MiniMax provider. That function was not inspected in this pass. The previous assessment accepted this path, and the PR does not change it.
Full details: Out of Scope Changes check
Explanation
The whole-PR changes (mergeBase a15ba8c to head 38043af) are limited to: src/api/transform/bedrock-converse-format.ts and its spec; src/api/providers/bedrock.ts and its spec; src/api/providers/minimax.ts and its spec. Each change implements #1665: Bedrock reasoning conversion and gating, the MiniMax sanitization, and MiniMax signature capture. The tests directly exercise these changes. No unrelated product, configuration, documentation, workflow, or release changes appear in the reviewed summary. Claude signature capture is not implemented, consistent with its deferral to #1837.
Full details: Regression Evidence
Explanation
Initial diff review shows focused tests for each changed behavior: Bedrock reasoning conversion and filtering, new-user boundary, signature omission, reasoning-only placeholder, model opt-in, and MiniMax signature capture, stale-signature reset, and block filtering. I am checking surrounding call paths for any omitted negative or unset branch before finalizing.
Full details: Security Boundaries
Explanation
No concrete security-boundary violation is introduced. MiniMax now applies the existing allowlist in filterNonAnthropicBlocks before sending messages, so internal and unknown block types are removed. The new signature_delta handling stores an opaque provider signature for later protocol use; it does not log, execute, or expose it. Bedrock replays only reasoning/thinking text when the configured model explicitly has preserveReasoning === true, omits signatures, and drops reasoning before a new user message. No changed path bypasses approval controls or provides a new secret/PII exfiltration path.
Full details: Persistence Integrity
Explanation
No changed persistence path matches the failure conditions. The PR changes MiniMax in-memory signature capture and Bedrock/MiniMax request transformation. Task.addToApiConversationHistory still awaits saveApiConversationHistory, and the changed provider call awaits client.messages.create() before stream consumption. The diff adds no non-atomic write, missing rollback, unawaited persistence operation, or unpropagated persisted default.
Full details: Lifecycle Resource Cleanup
Explanation
No changed lifecycle path can leak a resource or duplicate work. The PR only adds MiniMax signature state/reset/capture, request-block filtering, and Bedrock message conversion. MiniMax still uses the existing withFinallyCleanup wrapper for normal completion, stream failure, and early consumer stop; the changed signature_delta branch only assigns a string and does not create listeners, timers, watchers, tasks, or providers. Bedrock changes are synchronous conversion logic.

Reporter of #1665. This covers the report: reasoning blocks become Bedrock reasoningContent
instead of [Unknown Block Type], and the MiniMax signature is captured for replay. The wiring
checks out — getThoughtSignature() matches the hook read by prepareAssistantMessage, and thinking is in VALID_ANTHROPIC_BLOCK_TYPES, so the new filter does not strip what it
preserves.
Two points:
Signatures issued by another backend. AWS documents signature as a token verifying the
text was generated by the model, and requires it replayed "unmodified". When a task switches
providers mid-conversation, the stored signature came from elsewhere. Does Bedrock reject
it? If so, replaying only same-provider signatures would avoid a 400 on that path.
(Unsigned blocks are fine: signature is Required: No.)
Bedrock never captures its own reasoning signatures, so any signature
stored on a thinking block was issued by another provider (MiniMax) and
would fail Bedrock's verification after a mid-task provider switch.
Replay the reasoning text unsigned instead; `signature` is optional.
Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 (1M context) <noreply@anthropic.com>
Do not replace filtered reasoning with an empty text block.
If a message contains only reasoning and preserveReasoning is false, this branch sends { text: "" } to Bedrock. Bedrock rejects blank text blocks with a ValidationException, so the request and retries fail for that history. Use a nonblank fallback or omit the message when the conversation structure permits it. Update the test at src/api/transform/__tests__/bedrock-converse-format.spec.ts:84-87, which currently requires the invalid payload. Reported Converse failures confirm the blank-text rejection. If a plain-text user message follows an assistant turn that has reasoning, does any test cover the typeof next.content === "string" branch with preserveReasoning: true? I could not find one, and I could not find one for reasoning on the last message either. Removing the string check would call .some on a string. Could this become an it.each over string and array next.content, for both reasoning and thinking blocks?
