fix: preserve node-view state and mobile editing content - #3299
Investigated while working on #3150 and #2994. No public API or dependency changes.
Problem
Fix
External wrapper attributes reset custom React state
Ignore presentation attributes on block wrappers, while still observing content edits.
Mobile Enter in a React block loses the suffix
Observe native sibling edits at contentDOM's parent, excluding React attachment/detachment; delegate other mutations to TipTap.
Enter inside editable inline content throws
Split through the inline ancestors, letting ProseMirror preserve their attributes and marks.
Typing into a one-character inline node is swallowed
Run deletion handling only for Backspace/Delete, not ordinary character keys.
First iOS Delete after Return does nothing
Handle Shift-Backspace at block and inline boundaries. Native controls confirmed autocapitalization supplies Shift.
Also adds an ios-simulator skill for repeatable native testing without diagnostic source changes.
Validation
Automated, red-first: inline start/middle/end splits, attributes/marks, continued typing/deletion, shifted boundary protection, React suffix preservation, and framed/unframed wrapper-state stability.
Simulator: iPhone 17 Pro / iOS 26.4 Safari; native software-keyboard input, nested/framed blocks, selections, marks/props, repeated Enter/insertion, chrome updates, focus, undo, and native paragraph/list/table controls. Model and DOM were checked alongside recordings.
Results: core 104 passed / 1 skipped; latest focused browser run 14 passed across iOS, Android, Chromium, Firefox and WebKit; lint/format checks passed.
Outstanding: broad mobile runs finished 92 passed / 1 failed / 1 skipped. The iOS link-popover URL-prefill assertion also fails with origin/main runtime snapshots; its cause remains unresolved.
Scope: the original #2994 insertion freeze was not reproduced or claimed fixed. One intermittent Unicode suffix-loss observation remains unresolved despite seven subsequent passing repeats. Simulator coverage does not imply physical-device/iPad/IME coverage; arbitrary React chrome and full modal integrations are not exhaustively tested.
Before / after
Real simulator captures: native Return/Delete taps; fixture/caret setup uses editor APIs and demo text uses native automation. The React pair switches renderer variants; other pairs were recorded before/after their core fixes. These demonstrate editing fixes, not the wrapper-state fix or original insertion freeze.

Summary by CodeRabbit
Bug Fixes
Pressing Enter inside inline content now splits text at the caret while preserving formatting and selection.
Shift-Backspace now behaves like Backspace, including at inline-content boundaries.
Improved editing in custom React blocks: content remains editable after Enter, and block state is preserved as wrappers change.
Documentation
Added iOS simulator guidance and tooling for checking native input, inspecting editor behavior, and recording and reporting results.
The PR changes block node-view mutation handling, inline split depth, and Backspace shortcuts. It adds browser and mobile tests for those behaviors. It also adds an iOS Simulator testing guide and an Appium CLI for session control, editor inspection, native input, and evidence capture.
Block node views now ignore selected wrapper attribute mutations. The React node view handles selected child-list mutations through TipTap’s existing handler. Browser tests check wrapper updates, custom block state, insertion, and content edits.
Inline splitting and deletion packages/core/src/api/blockManipulation/commands/splitBlock/*, packages/core/src/extensions/InlineContentBoundaryEdit/InlineContentBoundaryEdit.ts, packages/core/src/extensions/tiptap-extensions/KeyboardShortcuts/KeyboardShortcutsExtension.ts, packages/core/src/schema/inlineContent/internal.ts, tests/src/end-to-end/mobile/*
Split depth now accounts for inline ancestors nested below block content. Shift-Backspace uses the Backspace handler, and inline deletion checks explicitly identify deletion keys. Tests cover inline token splitting, editing, and Backspace behavior.

Summary
Simulator setup and Appium actions .claude/skills/ios-simulator/SKILL.md, .claude/skills/ios-simulator/scripts/device.mjs
The guide describes simulator setup and native input checks. The CLI creates and closes Appium sessions, performs WebDriver and native actions, retrieves editor state, and saves screenshots.
Diagnostics and evidence reporting .claude/skills/ios-simulator/SKILL.md, .claude/skills/ios-simulator/references/native-debugging.md
The guidance covers keyboard and ProseMirror diagnostics, simulator recording, result reporting, and limits on what test or simulator results establish.
The editing changes have no established merge-blocking defect. The simulator helper still needs bounded follow-up for query-bearing Appium URLs and credential-bearing session files; avoid those configurations until corrected.

Explanation
The title "fix: preserve node-view state and mobile editing content" is a short, single conventional-commit line that names the two main themes of the changeset. The changeset covers React node-view state preservation (createBlockNodeView, ReactBlockSpec ignoreMutation, BlockContainer wrapper mutation filtering) and mobile editing fixes (inline split, Backspace/Delete handling, Shift-Backspace at boundaries). It also adds an iOS Simulator skill, which the title does not mention, but that is a secondary part of the change.
Full details: Description check
Explanation
The description follows the repository template's main sections. It includes a summary of what the PR fixes, a validation section that covers automated and simulator testing, and a before/after section with recordings. Its Changes and Impact sections are not labeled as in the template. It has no explicit Checklist, and the Screenshots/Video content is given as user-attachment links inside collapsible blocks. The description also does not state how the iOS Simulator skill relates to the rest of the Changes. The Rationale is covered by the problem table. The description reports test results and lists unresolved failures, so the template's Testing and Impact expectations are met. Overall, the description is mostly complete.

Add FFmpeg to the iOS simulator prerequisites, or note it before the recording-review commands.
The recording-review commands at native-debugging.md:117-118 call ffprobe and ffmpeg. The skill's Prerequisites list does not include FFmpeg, and no setup step in the repository installs it. An operator who follows the listed prerequisites and reaches this section gets a command-not-found error.
📝 Suggested fix
- macOS, full Xcode selected, an installed iOS runtime, and Node.js/pnpm.
- Docker for browser tests. Use only `vp` / `pnpm`, not npm/yarn.
+- FFmpeg (`ffmpeg` and `ffprobe`) for the recording-review commands. Install it with `brew install ffmpeg`.

Add a nested editable inline case to the split test.
Add a nested editable inline case to the split test.
The fixture has one editable inline ancestor. For every case, splitBlock.ts computes splitDepth as 3. A fixed depth of 3 would pass all three offsets.
Add a case where a styled token contains another editable token. Place the caret inside the inner token. Assert that the block splits into two blocks and that both inline ancestors split. The formula gives 4 for this caret position, which also splits the block container. A fixed depth of 3 would leave the block container unsplit, so the new case can detect that regression.
The fixture can be built with initialContent. Array-valued inline content converts recursively, so a nested token is supported at creation. Assert on the ProseMirror document structure. This test does not otherwise check the block-level read path for nested inline children.

Extend the splitBlock inline-node test using the existing BlockNoteEditor.create
fixture and editor.transact flow with a styled token containing a nested
editable token, and place the caret inside the inner token. Assert from the
ProseMirror document structure that the split produces two blocks and splits
both inline ancestors, so the test fails if splitBlock.ts uses a fixed depth of
3.
Limit the ignoreMutation override to the native Enter clone case.
The override returns false for every child-list change beside contentDOM. ProseMirror then marks the block node view dirty and rebuilds it. A custom block that conditionally renders a sibling of its content mount can lose its DOM and component state. Keep returning true for sibling changes that TipTap already ignores.

Narrow the child-list override in the ignoreMutation logic to the native Enter
case where contentDOM is cloned into a sibling, rather than returning false for
every sibling change beside contentDOM. Preserve TipTap’s existing
ignored-mutation behavior for other sibling additions or removals so conditional
custom-block siblings retain their DOM and component state.

Remove the partial session file after the remote session closes.
If write fails after session.json is created, the new catch closes the remote session but keeps the file. The next create then refuses to start, and close fails when it parses the partial JSON. Delete the file after the remote session closes.

In the write failure handler, remove the partial session file identified by
sessionFile after deleteSession successfully closes the remote session. Keep
file-removal failures within the existing cleanup error handling so the original
and cleanup errors remain reported.
Place the toggled aside beside the contentRef element.
In the test fixture, the aside is a child of the contentRef element, which is contentDOM. Its insertion and removal therefore mutate contentDOM directly. The parent-target condition in the ignoreMutation override does not hold, so the test does not exercise sibling mutations, although its title describes that case.
Moving the aside beside the contentRef element makes the outer div the mutation target. The aside has no data-node-view-content-react attribute, so this path uses the default ignoreMutation handler. The return false branch for marked content clones remains outside this test.

Build the Appium request path before the query string.
request() appends path to endpoint as a string. If APPIUM_URL includes a ? query, the WebDriver path becomes part of the query. The request then goes to the endpoint root with the path in the query. Set the path on the parsed URL's pathname so the query stays in search.

TipTap PR #8355 was originally pitched as a fix for #2994. I'm a little confused about how this fits into everything, since it looks like you couldn't reproduce #2994 (neither could I IIRC), so is this actually related to inline content insertions causing freezes?
The reason will be displayed to describe this comment to others. Learn more.
Yea I couldn't reproduce it either (likely it is something on the React side that borked up). This is just meant to document the fact that if that PR gets merged in tiptap we can remove this one potentially. But, given that we don't have a repro we don't know.
It does solve some real issues with enter splitting content, we just aren't confident about the supposed freezes that happened
