fix(core): announce Tab indentation to screen readers - #3290
Pressing Tab / Shift-Tab now tells screen reader users what happened, e.g. "Indented, level 2" or "Outdented, level 1". Closes#2812.
Rationale
Indenting a block only changed it visually, so someone using a screen reader had no way to know whether Tab worked or how deep the block now sits.
Changes
New LiveAnnouncerExtension (default, exported): a visually hidden role="status" / aria-live="polite" region rendered as a sibling of the contenteditable, so ProseMirror never touches it and it stays near the editor (e.g. inside the same dialog). It's added on mount and removed on unmount, and has an announce(message) method that other features can reuse.
The Tab / Shift-Tab handler announces the new nesting level, only when the block actually moved.
New block_nesting dictionary entries, translated in every bundled locale.
Impact
No visual change. Custom dictionaries typed as Dictionary will need the two new block_nesting entries, same as any new string.
Testing
Unit tests in KeyboardShortcutsExtension.test.ts: the region's attributes and placement, Tab / Shift-Tab messages, no announcement when nothing moves, a localized dictionary, and cleanup on unmount. All of them fail without the fix.
Checked manually in Chromium: the accessibility tree shows status: Indented, level 2 after Tab and status: Outdented, level 1 after Shift-Tab.
pnpm lint, pnpm test and pnpm build pass locally. I didn't run the e2e suite.
Screenshots/Video
No visual change. Before and after screenshots are pixel-identical.
Checklist
Code follows the project's coding standards.
Unit tests covering the new feature have been added.
All existing tests pass.
The documentation has been updated to reflect the new feature
Additional Notes
Translations other than English and French would benefit from a native speaker's check. AI-assisted.

Accessibility
Screen readers now receive localized announcements when blocks are successfully indented or outdented, including the resulting nesting level. No announcement is made when the operation cannot be completed.
Announcements are available in 25 languages and are enabled by default in the editor, helping people using assistive technology track changes to block structure.
Indenting or outdenting a block with Tab / Shift-Tab only changed it
visually, so screen reader users got no feedback that it worked or which
level the block ended up at.
Adds a LiveAnnouncerExtension that renders a visually hidden, polite
status region next to the editor, and announces "Indented, level N" /
"Outdented, level N" from the Tab handler when the block actually moves.
The messages are translated in every bundled locale.
No actionable comments were generated in the recent review.
Walkthrough
The editor adds a polite live region for screen-reader announcements. Successful Tab and Shift-Tab block nesting changes announce the resulting nesting level using localized messages. Missing locale dictionary sections use English fallback values.

A new extension creates a polite status region beside the editor, exposes announce(message), and removes the region when its abort signal fires. The default extensions include it.
Keyboard announcements and localization packages/core/src/extensions/tiptap-extensions/KeyboardShortcuts/KeyboardShortcutsExtension.ts, packages/core/src/editor/BlockNoteEditor.ts, packages/core/src/i18n/locales/*, packages/core/src/extensions/tiptap-extensions/KeyboardShortcuts/KeyboardShortcutsExtension.test.ts, packages/core/src/editor/BlockNoteEditor.node.test.ts
Successful Tab and Shift-Tab moves announce the resulting nesting level. Locale dictionaries provide translated messages. The editor supplies English defaults for missing emoji_picker and block_nesting sections without mutating an incomplete input dictionary. Tests cover announcement behavior, move failures, localization, fallback values, and cleanup.
Versioning status test scope packages/react/src/components/Versioning/VersioningSidebar.browser.test.tsx
Versioning sidebar tests now check for status elements within the History region.
TypeCellOS/BlockNote#3121 — This PR extends the editor’s dictionary fallback path introduced for emoji_picker to include block_nesting.

The title "fix(core): announce Tab indentation to screen readers" matches the main change. The PR adds a polite live region (LiveAnnouncerExtension) and makes Tab and Shift-Tab announce the new nesting level. The title is specific, concise, and follows a conventional commit format.

Explanation
The description follows the repository template. It has Summary, Rationale, Changes, Impact, Testing, Screenshots/Video, Checklist, and Additional Notes. It explains the purpose, lists the changes, describes the testing, and states the impact on custom dictionaries. The Screenshots/Video section gives a textual before/after comparison, not an image. One checklist item (documentation updated) is unchecked, and the description does not explain why. The Summary uses a clear example. These gaps are minor.

Explanation
Issue #2812 requires assistive-technology feedback when Tab changes block indentation and requires the resulting level. KeyboardShortcutsExtension.ts announces localized indented or outdented messages only when the move succeeds. LiveAnnouncerExtension provides a polite status region beside the editor. The bundled dictionaries and unit-test changes support the feature, including localization and no-movement cases.
Full details: Out of Scope Changes check
Explanation
The changes stay connected to issue #2812. The live announcer, default registration, export, keyboard integration, locale entries, dictionary fallback, and tests implement or support the announcement feature. The Versioning test scopes its status query because the feature adds another status region. No unrelated change is demonstrated.

The Tab announcement test asserts only levels 1 and 2. An indent that announces a fixed level, or a wrong depth for a block nested under a level-2 block, can pass this test. A three-block nesting can reach level 3, and no assertion covers that depth.
Add a test that nests c under b and expects the level-3 announcement. Place it inside the same describe block, after the existing announcement test.

Add a level-3 Tab announcement test after the existing announcement test in the
same describe block. Create a three-block nesting with c nested under b,
position the cursor on c, indent it with pressTab, and assert the live region
announces “Indented, level 3”; clean up the editor and wrapper as in neighboring
tests.

@helloigig thanks for submitting this. We are working on a number of updates around accessibility in the next few months, this was on the list to address.
I actually quite like the solution that was done here, for having the announcer be a separate extension triggered by the keyboard shortcut. Its at the right level of abstraction, thanks for submitting this. @matthewlipski is in charge of working on accessibility of the editor, so I will leave the actual review to him
Hi! I agree with @nperez0111, the implementation of this looks good. We are in the middle of some major accessibility work at the moment, namely testing infrastructure (see #3177) and fixing a handful of issues found in an external audit. Because of that, I wanna hold off merging this right now as we'll get to fixing this issue and other, similar ones (like block types not being announced to screen readers) in the coming weeks. Most likely we'll start with merging this PR and working off of the LiveAnnouncerExtension for the other additions requiring a live region.
Custom dictionaries written before `block_nesting` existed made Tab throw
a TypeError when announcing the new level. Fill the section in from `en`,
the same way `emoji_picker` is.
Also covers announcing a level deeper than 2.
The editor now renders its own `role="status"` live region, so page-wide
`getByRole("status")` queries matched it too: strict-mode violations, and
"no loader" assertions that always failed. Look for the sidebar's loading
indicator inside the History region instead.

Filling in `block_nesting` by assigning onto the caller's dictionary threw
for frozen dictionaries, which constructed fine before. Copy the dictionary
when a section is missing instead, and keep complete dictionaries as-is.
Quick update while this is on hold: custom dictionaries without block_nesting now fall back to English on a copy, so the caller’s dictionary is never modified (this applies to the existing emoji_picker fallback too). The failing E2E shards were from this PR: the Versioning sidebar tests’ page-wide role="status" queries also matched the new live region, so I’ve scoped them to the sidebar.
