Closes #2609 (BLO-1120). Related to #1685.

Problem

  • In Firefox and Safari, no drag preview shows when you drag a block with the drag handle.
  • In Chrome, the drag preview does not look like the block in the editor:
    • An image is larger than in the editor. For example, an image that is 623 px wide in the editor is 1080 px wide in the preview.
    • Long text wraps at a different place.
    • A table has no grid.
    • The editor theme (for example, dark mode) does not apply.

Cause

  • The preview was hidden with opacity: 0.001 (fix: Drag preview visibility #976). Chrome does not keep this opacity in its snapshot of the preview, but Firefox and Safari keep it. Thus their preview is invisible.
  • The preview is in document.body, outside the editor. It did not have the width of the editor, the editor classes (bn-editor, ProseMirror), or the theme of the editor container. Thus the editor CSS did not apply to it.

Changes

setDragImage in dragging.ts:

  • The preview is a copy of the editor container (the closest .bn-root) without its children. Thus it has the same classes, color scheme and theme variables.
  • In the preview, an element has the classes of the editor element and the width of the dragged blocks. It holds the copies of the dragged blocks. Thus the editor CSS applies to the blocks, as in the editor.
  • The preview is off-screen (top: -10000px) instead of almost transparent.
  • The layout of the preview is inline. Thus app CSS that sizes the editor (for example, .bn-editor { height: 500px }) does not apply to it. The height of the preview is limited to 75vh, so a tall preview does not go into the page from above.
  • The preview stays in the document until the drag ends, as before. Firefox and Safari take their snapshot after dragstart, so an earlier removal shows no preview in these browsers.

editor.css: the .bn-drag-preview rule is removed, because the layout is now inline.

How to test

  1. In Chrome, Firefox and Safari, open the default blocks example. Drag the table and the image with the drag handle. A preview shows. The table has its grid. The image has the same size as in the editor.
  2. Drag a paragraph with long text. The text wraps at the same places as in the editor.
  3. In Chrome, drag a wide and tall block (for example, a long code block), or several blocks. The preview is not cut off. (fix: Drag preview visibility #976 reports that an off-screen preview was cut off in an app.)
  4. In the scrollable editor example (.bn-editor { height: 500px }), drag a short block. The preview has the height of the block, not 500 px.
  5. In dark mode, drag a block. The preview has the dark background and light text of the editor.

New browser test: "draws the drag preview like the editor". It checks the width of the dragged block, the table grid, the color scheme, and that app CSS on .bn-editor does not change the height. The test fails on main.

The toggle drop test now waits for the highlight before it releases the mouse. Before, it sometimes released too early when the test machine was busy.

Notes

  • The automated tests cannot see the native drag preview. They check the preview element only. Thus the Firefox and Safari bug was not found by the tests. Step 1 of "How to test" is necessary.
  • Configurable drag'n'drop preview container in SideMenuPlugin #1685 is fixed only in part. The theme variables of the editor container now apply. CSS variables that the app sets on other ancestors of the editor do not apply, because the preview is in document.body.
  • Not changed: the reduced opacity that Drag ghost issues when moving blocks #2609 asks for. The browser sets the opacity of the native preview.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Bug Fixes
    • Drag previews now better match the editor’s appearance, including its width, color scheme, and table styling. App-level CSS is less likely to affect their sizing.
    • Embedded documents are no longer included in block drag previews. Previews are displayed off-screen with bounded height and hidden overflow, helping keep them contained while dragging.

…ike the editor

- The preview was hidden with `opacity: 0.001`. Chrome ignores this
opacity in its snapshot, but Firefox and Safari keep it, so they showed
no preview. The preview is now off-screen instead.
- The preview copies the theme of the editor's container (classes, color
scheme, theme variables), the editor's classes and the width of the
dragged blocks. Thus images have their size in the editor, text wraps as
in the editor, and tables have their grid.
- The layout of the preview is inline, so app CSS that sizes the editor
(e.g. a height on `.bn-editor`) does not apply to it. Its height is
limited, so a tall preview does not reach into the page.
- The toggle drop test waits for the highlight before it releases the
mouse, so it does not release too early under load.

Walkthrough

The drag preview now uses cloned editor elements and explicit layout styles. End-to-end tests check table preview dimensions and styling, and wait for a drop target during a toggle drop.

Explanation

The description is detailed and on-topic. It explains the problem, cause, implementation changes, testing steps, browser limitations, and known scope. It does not use the template headings or include the checklist and screenshots section, but the core required information is present.

Full details: Out of Scope Changes check

Explanation

The changes stay within #2609. The preview construction, editor CSS removal, preview rendering test, and toggle-drop synchronization support drag-preview or drag-drop behavior. No unrelated product behavior is changed.

Full details: Linked Issues check

Explanation

Active issue #2609 requires the drag preview to preserve block dimensions and styling, keep image blocks draggable after a drop, and use reduced opacity. The new preview copies the editor container, copies editor classes, sets the dragged block width, removes the near-zero opacity, and adds a test for width, table borders, color scheme, and editor sizing. The PR description explicitly states that the requested reduced opacity is not changed. The reviewed changes also add no repeated-image-drag regression test and do not change drop-state handling, so they do not establish that an image remains draggable after its first move.

Resolution

Implement or otherwise verify reduced opacity for the native drag preview without hiding the Firefox and Safari preview. Add a regression test that drags the same image block, drops it, and drags it again. Fix the drag or drop state if that test fails.

A rabbit watched the preview glide,
With cloned blocks tucked safely inside.
The table lines stayed clear,
Its width matched the block near,
Then the rabbit hopped off with pride.

🩺 Stability & Availability | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick win

Remove the injected CSS on every exit path.

If renderEditors or startBlockDrag fails, execution never reaches the try block and appCSS remains in the document. If dropDraggedBlock fails, the finally block also skips appCSS.remove(). The leaked rule can change later tests. Put setup inside the cleanup scope and remove the style in a nested finally.

Don't have any issues with the code, but 2 concerns with this approach:

  1. The preview shows the entire block, background included. This looks pretty weird, especially for blocks like the table where there's a lot of useless space on the right and bottom sides. I think we need to remove the background, that should be enough to make it visually look correct.
  2. We had the approach of putting the drag preview element outside the viewport before, but changed it to opacity: 0.001 because it was causing issues in a few edge cases. Would be good to get additional context on why we originally left this approach and if going back to it breaks the same edge cases.

I'm not sure what's better, but sure, we can remove the bg.

Yep, I looked back at history and this was the previous solution: #976. So we never had it off-screen like this, instead we used zindex:-1. You do mention some issues with the off-screen approach in the PR description, but unless you recall I'm not confident we can still figure out what that was (and it might have been DO specific)

I was so used to this not working that I forgot that drag previews could work for this. It works for me on firefox

Yeah I too remember it being DO specific but don't recall issues besides that. I think we can keep this approach unless someone reports issues with it, was just curious about it.
