feat(core): improve Word and Google Docs paste handling - #3226
Add best-effort Word and Google Docs cleanup to the default HTML paste handler, overridable through the existing pasteHandler.
Reconstruct Word lists, including mixed paragraph/native-list nesting, without changing the shared parser, editor APIs, exporters, or programmatic HTML imports.
Preserve Google Docs blank paragraphs without converting hard breaks inside selected paragraphs, headings, or inline wrappers into extra blocks.
Cover four inline clipboard captures with parsed-output snapshots, plus focused list-transition, formatting, table, and boundary regressions.
Intentional fallbacks
This is best-effort conversion, not exact Office preservation. Unsupported Word labels such as iv. or 1.2. remain paragraph text. Original numbers use BlockNote's normal sequential numbering. Native list structures with ambiguous metadata or content boundaries are left intact rather than guessing their parent.
Testing
132 Office checks passed in Docker across Chromium, Firefox, and WebKit.
9 existing clipboard checks passed; 18 Firefox/WebKit clipboard checks remain skipped by the existing suite.
Pasting content copied from Microsoft Word or Google Docs now better preserves list structure and blank paragraphs. Word paragraph-end placeholders are removed, while unsupported list labels remain as text.
Documentation
Added guidance on how external HTML paste handling works, including how custom paste handlers can retain or replace the default behavior.
It looks like this branch is under active development. To avoid overwhelming you with review comments due to an influx of new commits, CodeRabbit has automatically paused this review. You can configure this behavior by changing the reviews.auto_review.auto_pause_after_reviewed_commits setting.

Walkthrough
The HTML clipboard path now normalizes selected Microsoft Word and Google Docs content before passing it to the editor. The normalization handles supported Word lists and paragraph placeholders, and eligible Google Docs blank paragraphs. Tests and documentation cover the behavior and its limits.
Changes: Office HTML paste handling

Summary
Office HTML normalization packages/core/src/api/clipboard/fromClipboard/normalizeOfficeHTML.ts, packages/core/src/api/clipboard/fromClipboard/officeHTML.test.ts
Adds Word list and paragraph normalization, and handles eligible Google Docs blank paragraphs. Tests cover list transitions, placeholders, formatting, and unchanged HTML cases.
The HTML clipboard path normalizes content before calling editor.pasteHTML. Documentation describes custom handler behavior and the internal clipboard exception.

Cool. This is mostly about lists right? Do we know if there are other concepts that we can improve? should we have more testing documents / feed a suite of docx / google docs?

Thanks for the feedback, sorry for not able to participant earlier in this bug since we'd been working hard to launch version 4.
On topic, this's a recent Webkit regression and in fact CKEditor has been working very well with list transformation from MS-Word in the past, FYI a list of tickets to back this feature:
#5399
Lists pasted from Word do not maintain their nesting
#6330
Roman list style are not pasted properly from Word
#6658
Paste from Word in IE - Internal error of html formatter - Tabs in empty in lists
#6662
Lists copied from Word are not pasted properly.
#7131
Copy/Paste Word List should preserve list properties
#7269
paste from word - footnote links link to document path in webkit based browsers
#7480
Bulleted lists copied from MS Word are pasted into the Editor as Numbered lists
#7872
two-level list pasted from word gets flattened or split
#7898
Problem with Label for Lock ratio button not changing in High Contrast mode
The Webkit regression that introduced recently on Chrome, compared with what we had before, on presenting a (circle) list bullet from MS-Word:
Mozilla/5.0 (Windows NT 6.1) AppleWebKit/534.57.2 (KHTML, like Gecko)

As seen above the mso-list:Ignore that we relies on to identify a list item has gone that breaks this feature.

<title>Rich Text Paste: 7 Things That Break in Production | TinyMCE</title>

## 1. Lists and headings pasted from Word arrive as styled paragraphs
Word doesn’t put `<ul>` or `<ol>` on the clipboard. It sends paragraphs styled to look like a list, with the bullet typed out as a character. An editor that keeps that markup ends up with a fake list: users can’t indent or renumber it, and screen readers don’t announce it as a list.
Those paragraphs are only half of the clipboard payload. Word sends a complete HTML document, not a fragment: a `<head>` whose `<style>` block holds the list definitions (the bullet or number format and indent for each level), and a `<body>` whose paragraphs only point at those definitions through `mso-list`. Windows’ HTML clipboard format carries that context around the copied fragment. Neither half makes sense on its own.
Here’s a short two-level bulleted list as Word puts it on the clipboard, cut down to the parts that matter:
`<head><style>
@list l0:level1 {mso-level-number-format:bullet; mso-level-text:\F0B7; text-indent:-.25in;}

Recognize Wingdings markers by their font, not by unconditional glyph matching.
Word HTML uses mso-list:Ignore spans for custom Wingdings bullets, including § and ü. The current check rejects these markers, clears stack, and leaves the item as a paragraph.
The font declaration is on an ancestor of the marker span. Use that declaration as the discriminator. Do not add the glyphs to the allowlist unconditionally, because Word supports arbitrary custom bullet symbols.

Update the marker validation in normalizeOfficeHTML to recognize custom glyphs
only when a marker span or its ancestor declares Wingdings, rather than adding
those glyphs to the allowlist. Preserve rejection of unsupported non-Wingdings
markers, and add coverage for a nested Wingdings marker and a custom
non-Wingdings marker.
