Summary

  • sponsoredTips.test.ts: snapshot the real utils/settings/settings.js and utils/config.js exports ({ ...ns }) before any mock.module, and re-register those snapshots in afterAll. The old restore passed the live import * as namespaces back to mock.module. Bun repoints those namespaces at the mock, so the "restore" reinstalled the stubs and later files saw a stubbed getInitialSettings().
  • withRetry.test.ts: snapshot the real utils/sleep.js exports and the real utils/fastMode.js exports, and re-register both in afterEach. Before, the immediate sleep stub and the forced isFastModeEnabled stub stayed registered for the rest of the process, because mock.restore() does not undo mock.module.
  • loadSkillsDir.test.ts: add a small waitForReadiness helper that bounds the externally signalled waits: the fs-read hook in the "rejects obsolete ... reads" tests (1 s) and the two watcher-readiness waits (3 s, under the 15 s test timeout). If readiness never arrives, the test now fails with a clear message, its finally blocks run, and the shared test mutation lock is released. Adds one regression test that a readiness timeout releases the fixture lock.
  • Why: without --isolate, two leaks caused the whole-repo hangs.
    • When sponsoredTips ran before loadSkillsDir, the skill scan read no files and the obsolete-read tests waited forever while holding the shared mutation lock. Every later lock user then waited its full 5-minute timeout.
    • When withRetry ran before TaskOutputTool.activity.test.ts, the polling loop got an immediately resolving sleep under a frozen fake clock. Bun drains microtasks inside vi.advanceTimersByTime, so the test never returned.

Impact

  • user-facing impact: none (test-only).
  • developer/maintainer impact: removes the two single-process hangs and the lock-timeout cascade seen in randomized runs without --isolate (TA-001). --isolate stays in place for now.

Testing

  • I ran the required local preflight.
  • exact commands and results: on Bun 1.3.13, bun run build ok, bun run typecheck ok, bun run check ok (0 failures in every shard).
  • focused tests (Bun 1.3.13, no --isolate):
    • bun test src/services/tips/sponsoredTips.test.ts src/skills/loadSkillsDir.test.ts: pass, also with --randomize --seed=101.
    • bun test src/services/api/withRetry.test.ts src/tools/TaskOutputTool/TaskOutputTool.activity.test.ts: pass, also with --randomize --seed=6001.
    • loadSkillsDir.test.ts alone: 3/3 runs pass.
  • whole-repo runs (Bun 1.3.13, single process, no --isolate):
    • bun test --randomize --seed=101, --seed=2027 and --seed=6001 all finish with this change. There are no shared-lock timeouts, and the obsolete-read and TaskOutputTool.activity tests pass.
    • On main, seed 101 enters the lock-timeout cascade. Seeds 2027 and 6001 hang in TaskOutputTool.activity.test.ts until killed.
    • bun test --shard=N/8 for N = 1 to 8: no failures that main doesn't also have, and 2 fewer failures than main.
  • documented skipped checks, platform limitations, or verified pre-existing failures: the remaining order-dependent failures in randomized and sharded runs without --isolate (ProviderManager, MonitorPermissionRequest, agentStepLimit and others) also occur on main, and are outside this change.

Notes

  • provider/model path tested: n/a
  • screenshots attached (if UI changed): n/a
  • follow-up work or known limitations:
    • agentStepLimit ("does not charge a handoff aborted during provider preparation") still times out in some randomized orders. It's a separate leak, left for a follow-up.
    • The 10 loadSkillsDir "accepted ... notifications reconcile sibling commands and watches" tests still fail in the seed-101 order. Main already fails 9 of them before its lock cascade, and they need their own follow-up.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Tests
    • Improved test reliability by restoring mocked settings and configuration after use.
    • Added timeout handling for readiness checks, including verification that shared locks are released when a check times out.

📝 Walkthrough

The pull request updates tests in three suites. Two suites save original module exports for mock restoration. The skill-loading tests add bounded readiness waits and check that a shared mutation lock can be acquired after a readiness timeout.

Changes: Mock restoration

Layer / File(s) Summary
Save and restore mock exports
src/services/api/withRetry.test.ts, src/services/tips/sponsoredTips.test.ts
The retry tests save and restore the sleep and fast-mode modules. The sponsored tips test restores saved settings and config exports and checks selected exports against the originals.

Skill readiness timeouts

Layer / File(s) Summary
Bound skill-readiness waits
src/skills/loadSkillsDir.test.ts
A new helper rejects when readiness exceeds its timeout and clears the timer. The tests check lock acquisition after a timed-out fixture and use bounded waits for skill reads and watcher readiness.

Full details: Risk Surface Disclosed

Explanation

The PR changes only test files, including src/skills/loadSkillsDir.test.ts. The description calls out the skills scan/readiness and shared-lock risk, and states that the impact is test-only with no user-facing impact. It therefore identifies the relevant risk surface and indicates that no blocker is introduced.

Full details: No Hidden Policy Change

Explanation

The pull request changes only three *.test.ts files. The diff adds test-module snapshots/restoration, bounded test readiness waits, cleanup assertions, and a lock-release regression test. It does not change product code, routing defaults, telemetry/network behavior, trust-model behavior, or permission policy, so no maintainer policy alignment is required.

Load the real modules through cache-busted specifiers.

When an earlier suite registers a mock for either bare module path, these imports can capture that mock. afterAll then re-registers the captured mock for later tests. Use unique query-suffixed imports for both snapshots.

🟢 Thanks for the contribution. I do not see any actionable issues from my review.

Merge readiness

Rebase onto current main before merge. The head is one commit behind live main (a63ad4a9, TA-001 round 2 for githubModelsCredentials hydrate mocks, already merged as #2338). This PR does not need that sibling change to land, but rebasing avoids stacking another TA-001 fix on a stale base and keeps the upgrade-plan branch current.

Merge-base decision: live-base-three-dot at 4eae36abd6b282166daa7359c914c749e762ed6f through head b0f0dcaf6b71e1c42a11c134b1b60d1ab7490445. No excluded predecessor commits.

Required checks on head b0f0dcaf: all completed successfully, including typecheck, smoke-and-tests, eight unit-tests shards, dedicated-tests, launcher compatibility jobs, pr-intent-scan, CodeQL (CodeQL, CodeQL (actions), CodeQL (javascript-typescript)), and Analyze (javascript-typescript). web skipped (no web diff). Commit status rollup is success (CodeRabbit review completed).

Scope: test-only, surgical TA-001 isolation work; no dependency on other open PRs and no product-surface changes.

CodeRabbit review 5619150514 (CHANGES_REQUESTED) asks for cache-busted snapshot imports at withRetry.test.ts line 27 (inline comment 4352161124, GraphQL review thread PRRT_kwDOR2fj6M6vVCrJ). I classify that request as drift, not a merge-blocking defect on this head. Several suites do register process-global mock.module hooks on ../../utils/sleep.js and ../../utils/debug.js (for example auth.refreshLock.test.ts installs them at file top; compact.test.ts installs defensive sleep/debug stubs per test). TA-001 round 2 on main (#2338) uses ?real= cache-busted imports when capturing pre-mock exports for secureStorage; this PR’s withRetry change already follows that pattern for providers via ?withRetryActual=, while debug used the same bare import * snapshot at merge-base and the new sleep restore fixes the demonstrated leak (stubbed sleep left registered after this file’s tests). I re-ran auth.refreshLock + compact + withRetry together with --randomize for seeds 101, 2027, 6001, 42, and 999 (99 tests, 0 failures) and did not reproduce snapshot capture re-registering foreign mocks. Adopting cache-busted snapshots for debug/sleep/fastMode would be reasonable hardening aligned with #2338, but it is optional consistency, not a gap in the TA-001 fix under review.
