🎯 Functional Correctness | 🟠 Major | ⚡ Quick win
Keep compound commands unchanged.
Line 182 matches a leading script path before any whitespace. It rewrites ./hooks/check.sh && echo done and ./hooks/check.sh ; echo done to commands beginning with bash, although both are compound shell programs.
Detect a complete simple command instead of only the first .sh token. Add regression cases for a leading script followed by && and ;.

Mixed quoting bypasses detection
When a direct Windows hook path combines quoted and unquoted segments, such as "/c/Program Files"/hooks/check.sh, the new regex does not recognize the first shell word and leaves the command unprefixed, causing Windows to open the script through its file association instead of executing the hook.

I found issues that need to be addressed before this is ready. They come from one root cause in the new classifier rather than unrelated problems: the regex recognizes a few raw string shapes, but the behavior depends on which shell word is actually the executable after Bash interprets quoting, assignments, and redirections.
Findings
-
[P1] Preserve direct script words assembled with shell quoting
src/utils/hooks.ts:182
Bash concatenates adjacent quoted and unquoted fragments into one executable word. A normal plugin hook such as"${CLAUDE_PLUGIN_ROOT}"/hooks/check.sh --quietcan therefore become"/c/Program Files/plugin"/hooks/check.sh --quiet, and forms such as./hooks/"my check.sh" --quietand"./hooks/check".share also valid direct script invocations. The new alternatives accept a wholly quoted word or a wholly unquoted word, but reject these mixed forms. The base matcher prependedbashfor the same inputs; the PR head returns them unchanged. On Windows that sends the direct.shinvocation back through the file-association/non-execution path this change is intended to prevent, so a hook can fail or block an event such asUserPromptSubmit. The added tests cover full-word quoting and escaped spaces, but not Bash quote concatenation. Please make the decision from the actual executable word and add mixed-quoting coverage. Preserve the current substitution order and do not broaden matching back to.shtext that appears only later in an unrelated program. -
[P2] Distinguish the executable from assignment and function syntax
src/utils/hooks.ts:182
A leading raw word ending in.shis not necessarily an invoked script. For example,SCRIPT=./hooks/check.sh echo okinvokesechowith an environment assignment, but the helper changes it tobash SCRIPT=./hooks/check.sh echo ok, making Bash treat the assignment text as a script filename. Likewise, check.sh () { echo ok; }; check.shis a valid function definition and call; prependingbashproduces a syntax error at(. The inverse form also matters: an assignment- or redirection-prefixed direct invocation such asDEBUG=1 ./hooks/check.shor</dev/null ./hooks/check.shstill needs the Windows Bash accommodation, but the executable is not at byte zero. These behaviors existed in the broad base matcher, so this finding is an incomplete claimed fix rather than a newly introduced regression; it is in scope because this PR replaces that exact decision with a helper whose contract is “only direct shell scripts.” Please identify the executable position and grammatical role before insertingbash, while leaving assignments, redirections, and the rest of the command semantically intact.
Root-cause guidance
The repeated edge cases are a sign that adding another regex alternative will keep producing review rounds. Shell commands are not divided into “quoted path,” “unquoted path,” and “compound command” by their first characters. A simple command can start with assignments or redirections; one word can be assembled from several quoted and unquoted fragments; and operators after the first command do not change which executable runs first.
Please define and test the classifier around these invariants:
- Prepend the Windows Bash accommodation only when the first simple command actually invokes a
.shscript. - Respect shell-word concatenation, so fully quoted, escaped-space, and mixed quoted/unquoted paths have the same classification when they resolve to the same word.
- Preserve assignment and redirection prefixes around a direct script instead of placing them where Bash interprets them as a script argument.
- Leave explicit
bash/shinvocation and delegated commands such asenv DEBUG=1 ./check.shunchanged, matching the PR's existing contract and tests; this helper should classify the command being invoked directly, not recursively rewrite another command's arguments. - Leave control structures, function definitions, assignment-only/non-script commands, and unrelated commands that merely mention
.shunchanged. - Treat unsupported or ambiguous syntax conservatively by returning the original command rather than guessing and corrupting it.
- Preserve suffix arguments and operators. In particular,
./check.sh && echo donestill begins with a direct script invocation, andbash ./check.sh && echo doneis valid; do not adopt a blanket rule that every command containing an operator must remain unchanged.
A focused table-driven test matrix would make the intended boundary durable:
| Input class | Representative form | Required behavior |
|---|---|---|
| Plain direct script | ./hooks/check.sh --quiet |
Execute the script through Bash |
| Fully quoted direct script | "/c/Program Files/hooks/check.sh" --quiet |
Execute the script through Bash |
| Mixed-quoted direct script | "/c/Program Files"/hooks/check.sh --quiet |
Execute the script through Bash |
| Assignment-prefixed direct script | DEBUG=1 ./hooks/check.sh |
Preserve the assignment and execute the script through Bash |
| Redirection-prefixed direct script | </dev/null ./hooks/check.sh |
Preserve the redirection and execute the script through Bash |
| Explicit shell or delegated command | bash ./hooks/check.sh, env DEBUG=1 ./hooks/check.sh |
Leave unchanged under the current helper contract |
Assignment value ending in .sh |
SCRIPT=./hooks/check.sh echo ok |
Leave unchanged |
Function identifier ending in .sh |
check.sh () { echo ok; }; check.sh |
Leave unchanged |
Control structure mentioning .sh |
if [ -f ./hooks/check.sh ]; then ...; fi |
Leave unchanged |
| Direct script followed by an operator | ./hooks/check.sh && echo done |
Keep the list valid and ensure the first script runs through Bash |
| Unrelated mention | echo ./hooks/check.sh |
Leave unchanged |
| Malformed or unsupported syntax | Unterminated quoting or an unparseable prefix | Leave unchanged rather than guessing |
The repository already has shell-tokenization utilities that may be useful to evaluate, but this review is not prescribing a particular parser or a broader hook-execution refactor. The smallest non-drifting fix is localized to this Windows/non-PowerShell preparation step: determine the real first executable, apply bash at that position only when it is a direct .sh invocation, and preserve every other part of the command. That addresses both findings together and should prevent another sequence of one-off regex follow-ups.
