fix(openai-base): treat a caller abort as an abort, not a fatal error - #2095
When the caller aborts an OpenAI chat, the adapter logs openai.… fatal on the errors channel. That channel stays on when debug is left out, so each user Stop prints console.error, or goes to the app's logger and its error monitoring. A direct chatStream() call that is aborted before the response also yields RUN_ERROR with stopReason: 'error' and no code. The Responses and Chat Completions adapters now skip the log for a caller abort, and they classify the openai client's abort error as an abort (code: 'aborted').
🎯 Changes
isAbortError in both adapters also matches instanceof APIUserAbortError. The openai client throws that class, and it leaves name as 'Error', so the old name check never matched it. runErrorPayload returns { message: 'Request aborted', code: 'aborted' } for an abort, the same shape that core's toRunErrorPayload gives a named abort.
Every fatal log in a chatStream, processStreamChunks or structuredOutput catch is skipped when isAbortError(error) is true. The same blocks already use isAbortError to set stopReason: 'aborted'.
Unit tests: tests/caller-abort-logging.test.ts aborts mid-stream through chat(). tests/abort-before-response.test.ts aborts before the response, on direct chatStream() and structuredOutput() calls, for both APIs and for both createOpenAIClient() and new OpenAI().
E2E: four chat.spec.ts cases, openai (Responses) and openai-compatible (Chat Completions), mid-stream and before the response. The route api.chat-caller-abort.ts returns the errors log lines, plus the onAbort count or the RUN_ERROR code.
Docs: no change. docs/advanced/debug-logging.md describes the errors channel as the log of failures. The middleware guide sends an abort to onAbort, not to onError. A caller abort is not a failure, so the docs already describe the fixed behavior.
The catch blocks call logger.errors('… fatal') with no condition. Core treats a caller abort as onAbort, not onError.
On abort, the client throws new APIUserAbortError() from openai/core/error. In openai 7.30.0 that error has name: 'Error'. isAbortError and core's toRunErrorPayload match aborts by name only, so they miss it. The name check came in feat: streaming structured output across openai/openrouter/grok/groq + summarize fix #527, on openai 6.9.1, whose error also has name: 'Error'. The existing tests pass because they build a mock error with name: 'APIUserAbortError' set by hand.
Fix.isAbortError also checks instanceof APIUserAbortError, and runErrorPayload maps an abort to code: 'aborted'. Each fatal log in these catch blocks runs only when isAbortError(error) is false. A real failure still logs fatal and keeps its own code.
Possible alternatives
Set name on the error in client.ts. This also fixes core's name checks. But it misses a user-supplied new OpenAI() client, and the repro shows that case fails the same way.
Use instanceof in core. Core does not depend on openai, so it cannot import the class.
Drop error logs in core when the run's signal is aborted. That covers every adapter at once. But it changes the logger for all activities, and it can hide a real failure that occurs after an abort.
Also guard structuredOutputStream. Its fatal log runs after it yields RUN_ERROR. chat() stops at that chunk, so the log does not run there. A direct caller that keeps reading after RUN_ERROR can reach it. I have no repro for that path, so this PR leaves it alone.
Other adapters have the same unconditional fatal log in their stream catch blocks, from reading the code: Anthropic, Gemini, Ollama, Bedrock and OpenRouter. I did not run them. The Anthropic client throws the same unnamed APIUserAbortError, but its text adapter checks signal.aborted instead. They are out of scope, because the contributing guide asks for one topic per PR.

Manual test
On main, add this PR's tests/abort-before-response.test.ts. Run pnpm --filter @tanstack/openai-base exec vitest run tests/abort-before-response.test.ts. All 12 cases fail with stopReason: 'error' or a fatal log line.
On this branch, run the same command. All 12 cases pass.
Build @tanstack/openai-base. Then run pnpm --filter @tanstack/ai-e2e exec playwright test tests/chat.spec.ts --grep "caller abort". The mid-stream cases return { "errors": [], "aborts": 1 }. The before-response cases return { "errors": [], "code": "aborted" }.
How this PR makes testing easy. Each unit test file is one table: both APIs, and for the new file both client kinds. Each case uses the real OpenAI client over a fake fetch, with only the errors log channel on, as when debug is left out. The E2E route returns the log lines and the abort result as JSON, so a failure shows the exact log line. Gap: only chat-completions-text.test.ts asserts that a non-abort stream error still logs fatal. Responses has no such control test.
CodeRabbit. Both review threads asked for parts of #2096, and both were withdrawn as out of scope for the first push. This update fixes both: the direct chatStream abort with APIUserAbortError, and the structuredOutput log. The structuredOutputStream part of the first thread stays out (see Possible alternatives).
Related: #2090. It is the same client, with a different check: the adapters detect the SDK's stream by instanceof Stream, and the client's output does not match.
Risk / rollback
Low. The RUN_ERROR chunk still arrives, and a real failure still logs fatal. Two outputs change for an abort: the errors log line is gone, and RUN_ERROR.message is 'Request aborted' with code: 'aborted'. An ERR_CANCELED error already counted as an abort in isAbortError, so its RUN_ERROR.code is now also 'aborted'. To undo, revert the PR.
Summary by CodeRabbit
Bug Fixes
Caller-initiated cancellations during streamed chats no longer produce fatal entries in error logs. Other stream failures continue to be logged, and cancellation events are still reported.
Aborting a chat request before a response arrives now returns an aborted error. Cancelled structured-output requests also report cancellation without adding an error log entry.
Tests
Added coverage for caller cancellations across supported chat providers, streaming formats, and before-response scenarios.
The stream catch blocks skip the errors-channel log when isAbortError(error) is true. RUN_ERROR with code "aborted" is still yielded.
ClosesTanStack#2092
Both OpenAI text adapters now recognize caller aborts, skip fatal error logging for them, and return an aborted code for streaming errors. Unit and end-to-end tests cover mid-stream and pre-response aborts.

Explanation
Directly linked issue #2092 requires that a caller abort during OpenAI chat streaming runs onAbort, yields RUN_ERROR with code "aborted", and writes nothing to the errors channel. The head meets this for the mid-stream path that the issue reproduces. In responses-text.ts, processStreamChunks (around line 2720) skips the 'processStreamChunks fatal' log when isAbortError(error) is true. In chat-completions-text.ts, the stream catch (around line 275) has the same guard. The responses-text.ts chatStream catch (around line 641) is also guarded, as the issue's proposed fix requires. The RUN_ERROR yield and the 'aborted' payload are unchanged. The mid-stream case already matched isAbortError on the base revision, so the new APIUserAbortError recognition is not needed for #2092. Test evidence: tests/caller-abort-logging.test.ts and two E2E cases were reported to fail on main and pass on this branch. I did not re-run them. Residual scope: the issue's other adapters and structuredOutput paths are not required by #2092.

Explanation
The title "fix(openai-base): treat a caller abort as an abort, not a fatal error" matches the main change. The PR stops the openai-base Responses and Chat Completions adapters from logging a fatal error for a caller-initiated abort, and it classifies the OpenAI SDK's APIUserAbortError as an abort with code 'aborted'. The title is specific and uses a conventional commit prefix. It is 69 characters, within a reasonable length for a single-sentence title.

The description follows the repository template. It includes the Changes section with a detailed explanation of the fix, root cause, and alternatives. The checklist is filled in. The Release Impact section marks the changeset item as published code. It also covers testing, the linked issues (#2092, #2096), and risk and rollback. The template's Changes section asks what changed and why, and the description covers both. Some minor items are extra, such as the long repro code, but nothing required is missing.
Full details: Out of Scope Changes check
Explanation
The whole-PR diff (merge base e8546f9 to head 02ae7d2) adds changes that the linked issue does not require and that the PR description excludes. (1) Both adapters now import APIUserAbortError and check error instanceof APIUserAbortError inside isAbortError. The PR description says the guard covers pre-response aborts only after #2096 is fixed. The issue assigns the APIUserAbortError gap to #2096, which is related but not a linked target of this PR. (2) runErrorPayload in both adapters now returns { message: 'Request aborted', code: 'aborted' } for any abort. This changes error payloads on structuredOutput and direct adapter paths, which are outside #2092. (3) structuredOutput catches in both adapters now skip the fatal log. The PR objectives state that structured-output paths are excluded. (4) New tests and E2E cases cover pre-response aborts and an at=before-response route mode for #2096 behavior. The changeset also documents direct chatStream pre-response aborts. These changes share the abort-logging topic and helper, but they are not needed for the mid-stream fix in #2092. The PR description also says the chatStream guard is left out, while the head contains it. The chatStream guard is part of #2092's proposed fix, so it is in scope.
Resolution
Remove the #2096 and structured-output changes from this PR, or move them to a separate PR linked to #2096. Specifically: revert the APIUserAbortError import and instanceof check in isAbortError in both adapters; revert the runErrorPayload abort mapping in both adapters; revert the structuredOutput log guards in both adapters; remove abort-before-response tests (abort-before-response.test.ts and the before-response E2E cases and route mode); and remove the changeset text about direct chatStream pre-response aborts. Keep the processStreamChunks, chat-completions stream catch, and responses chatStream guards with their mid-stream tests. Update the PR description so it matches the code: it should list the chatStream guard as included and remove the statement that the chatStream block is left alone. Also correct the commit message claim that this PR closes #2096.

Update the abort detection around APIUserAbortError so before-response aborts
from another OpenAI module instance are recognized without relying on instanceof
alone. Use a reliable cross-instance-stable abort discriminator, and preserve
the adapter’s existing user-abort handling so these errors are not logged as
fatal or emitted with stopReason: 'error'.

Log non-abort failures before yielding RUN_ERROR.
If a consumer stops at RUN_ERROR, the generator closes before this log runs. Request failures such as HTTP 429 can therefore go unlogged. Move the guarded log before the yield.

Skip fatal logs for structured-output stream aborts.
When a direct caller drains structuredOutputStream and an aborted SSE read throws, both adapters log a fatal error after yielding RUN_ERROR. Guard both logs with !isAbort.

When the caller aborts an OpenAI chat, the adapter logs
openai.… fatalon theerrorschannel. That channel stays on whendebugis left out, so each user Stop printsconsole.error, or goes to the app's logger and its error monitoring. A directchatStream()call that is aborted before the response also yieldsRUN_ERRORwithstopReason: 'error'and nocode. The Responses and Chat Completions adapters now skip the log for a caller abort, and they classify the openai client's abort error as an abort (code: 'aborted').🎯 Changes
isAbortErrorin both adapters also matchesinstanceof APIUserAbortError. The openai client throws that class, and it leavesnameas'Error', so the oldnamecheck never matched it.runErrorPayloadreturns{ message: 'Request aborted', code: 'aborted' }for an abort, the same shape that core'stoRunErrorPayloadgives a named abort.fatallog in achatStream, processStreamChunksorstructuredOutputcatch is skipped whenisAbortError(error)is true. The same blocks already useisAbortErrorto setstopReason: 'aborted'.tests/caller-abort-logging.test.tsaborts mid-stream throughchat().tests/abort-before-response.test.tsaborts before the response, on directchatStream()andstructuredOutput()calls, for both APIs and for bothcreateOpenAIClient()andnew OpenAI().chat.spec.tscases,openai(Responses) andopenai-compatible(Chat Completions), mid-stream and before the response. The routeapi.chat-caller-abort.tsreturns theerrorslog lines, plus theonAbortcount or theRUN_ERRORcode.docs/advanced/debug-logging.mddescribes theerrorschannel as the log of failures. The middleware guide sends an abort toonAbort, not toonError. A caller abort is not a failure, so the docs already describe the fixed behavior.@tanstack/openai-base.✅ Checklist

Root cause
Issue. Two cases, both in the Responses and Chat Completions adapters:
fatalentry to theerrorslog channel (openai-base: a caller abort mid-stream logs 'processStreamChunks fatal' on the errors channel #2092). This occurs when the abort lands while the adapter waits for the next SSE event.chatStream()orstructuredOutput()call that is aborted before the response arrives logschatStream fatalorstructuredOutput fatal.chatStream()also yieldsRUN_ERRORwithstopReason: 'error'and nocode(openai-base: a caller abort from the openai client is not classified as an abort (APIUserAbortError has no name) #2096). Throughchat()this does not show, because core stops first.Cause.
logger.errors('… fatal')with no condition. Core treats a caller abort asonAbort, notonError.new APIUserAbortError()fromopenai/core/error. In openai 7.30.0 that error hasname: 'Error'.isAbortErrorand core'stoRunErrorPayloadmatch aborts bynameonly, so they miss it. The name check came in feat: streaming structured output across openai/openrouter/grok/groq + summarize fix #527, on openai 6.9.1, whose error also hasname: 'Error'. The existing tests pass because they build a mock error withname: 'APIUserAbortError'set by hand.Fix.
isAbortErroralso checksinstanceof APIUserAbortError, andrunErrorPayloadmaps an abort tocode: 'aborted'. Eachfatallog in these catch blocks runs only whenisAbortError(error)is false. A real failure still logsfataland keeps its own code.Possible alternatives
nameon the error inclient.ts. This also fixes core'snamechecks. But it misses a user-suppliednew OpenAI()client, and the repro shows that case fails the same way.instanceofin core. Core does not depend onopenai, so it cannot import the class.structuredOutputStream. Itsfatallog runs after it yieldsRUN_ERROR.chat()stops at that chunk, so the log does not run there. A direct caller that keeps reading afterRUN_ERRORcan reach it. I have no repro for that path, so this PR leaves it alone.Other adapters have the same unconditional
fatallog in their stream catch blocks, from reading the code: Anthropic, Gemini, Ollama, Bedrock and OpenRouter. I did not run them. The Anthropic client throws the same unnamedAPIUserAbortError, but its text adapter checkssignal.abortedinstead. They are out of scope, because the contributing guide asks for one topic per PR.Testing

Each unit test file is one table: both APIs, and for the new file both client kinds. Each case uses the real OpenAI client over a fake
fetch, with only theerrorslog channel on, as whendebugis left out. The E2E route returns the log lines and the abort result as JSON, so a failure shows the exact log line. Low. The

AnERR_CANCELEDerror already counted as an abort inisAbortError, so itsRUN_ERROR.codeis now also'aborted'. To undo, revert the PR.Summary by CodeRabbit
