fix(ai-sandbox-daytona): report writableStdin false so Claude Code and Codex stop hanging - #1954
On Daytona, Claude Code and Codex runs hang forever. The CLI waits for EOF on stdin, but Daytona cannot close a command's stdin. This PR sets writableStdin: false on Daytona, so the harnesses write the prompt to a file and redirect it into the CLI (claude -p ... < file).
🎯 Changes
packages/ai-sandbox-daytona: DAYTONA_CAPS.writableStdin is now false, with a comment that gives the reason.
Unit test: asserts writableStdin is false. The stdin-forwarding test stays.
Docs: Daytona moves to the false list in docs/sandbox/providers-advanced.md.
I have tested code changes locally with pnpm run test:pr, or these tests do not apply to this pull request.
I fully understand the code in this pull request, including any code generated with AI assistance.
Docs: I updated docs/ for this change, or this change is not user-facing.
Changeset: I added a changeset (pnpm changeset), or this PR does not change a published package.
🚀 Release Impact
This change affects published code, and I have generated a changeset.
This change is docs/CI/dev-only (no release).
Root cause
Issue. On Daytona, a Claude Code or Codex run never starts. The CLI waits with no output until the run is aborted.
Cause.DAYTONA_CAPS.writableStdin was true, so the adapters fed the prompt over stdin. spawnNdjson and startJournaledAgent call stdin.write() and then stdin.end(). Daytona's stdin.end() is a no-op, because the session API (sendSessionCommandInput) can send bytes but cannot close stdin. claude -p and codex exec read stdin to EOF, so they wait forever.
Fix. With writableStdin: false, the Claude Code and Codex adapters take their existing file path: they write the prompt to /tmp and run <cli> < file. The shell closes stdin at the end of the file.
Possible alternatives
Implement a real end(). This needs an SDK call that closes a session command's stdin. @daytona/sdk 0.192.0 has no such call.
Run spawned commands in a PTY and send Ctrl-D. This changes the output model (stdout and stderr merge, terminal echo), and it touches every spawn. That is too large for this bug.
Side effects of false (both use paths that other providers already use):
The workspace bootstrap shell uses the exec-backed shell, not a live sh over stdin.
ACP transport: 'stdio' is rejected on Daytona. 'auto' picks the websocket transport.
Testing
Commands run
pnpm vitest run in packages/ai-sandbox-daytona: 69 passed, 3 skipped.
A live repro against a real Daytona sandbox (script below). It mirrors the adapters' choice: stdin write+end when writableStdin is true, file redirect when false.
Not run locally: pnpm test:pr. CI runs it.
== MAIN (handle.ts from 3ce3085d6)
writableStdin = true
HUNG: still waiting after 30s "hello"
== BRANCH
writableStdin = false
exit 0 "got:hello"
The repro spawns node -e "...process.stdin.on('end', () => console.log('got:' + s))". On main, got: never prints.
Manual test
On main, run a Claude Code chat on daytonaSandbox(...). The run hangs with no output.
On this branch, run the same chat. The prompt reaches the CLI and the run streams output.
How this PR makes testing easy
The unit test in packages/ai-sandbox-daytona/tests/handle.test.ts fails if the flag goes back to true. There is no E2E test: the E2E suite does not run against a live Daytona sandbox.

Walkthrough
Daytona now reports writableStdin: false because its session API cannot close command stdin. Tests verify that stdin writes are still forwarded. The provider documentation and changeset describe this behavior and the prompt-file path.
Daytona now reports writableStdin: false. Tests verify that writes still reach the command. The documentation and changeset describe the missing EOF behavior and prompt-file path.
Daytona avoids the reported stdin hang through the file-prompt fallback, but environment propagation in the new bootstrap path is unverified and no regression test covers EOF-dependent completion.

Explanation
[#1926] Requirement 1, correct the advertised stdin capability: met. DAYTONA_CAPS.writableStdin is now false in packages/ai-sandbox-daytona/src/handle.ts, with a comment that explains that stdin.end() cannot send EOF. The issue allows this option.
[#1926] Requirement 2, add a regression test that verifies an EOF-dependent process exits: not met. The diff in packages/ai-sandbox-daytona/tests/handle.test.ts adds only a capability assertion (writableStdin is false). The retained stdin test checks that write() reaches sendSessionCommandInput. Neither test verifies that a process reading to EOF completes. The PR description reports a manual live repro and no E2E test. The repro is not an automated regression test.
[#1926] Requirement 3, address the Claude Code and Codex hangs: addressed by the flag change, per the issue text and PR description. The adapter branch that selects the prompt-file path was not confirmed in source within the inspection budget. This is an unverified point, not a contradiction.
[#1926] Requirement 4, preserve scope for Grok Build and OpenCode: the diff does not change those providers.
Resolution
Add an automated regression test that verifies the Daytona file-redirect path completes for an EOF-dependent harness. Options: (a) a test in packages/ai-sandbox-daytona/tests/ that spawns a command in the form <cmd> < /tmp/<file> through DaytonaHandle with a fake session, and asserts that the command receives the prompt and that the process wait resolves; or (b) a Claude Code or Codex adapter test with writableStdin: false on Daytona that asserts the spawned command redirects from a prompt file and the prompt is written to that file before the run starts. The test must fail when writableStdin is set back to true.

Set an explicit timeout on Daytona exec calls.
With writableStdin: false, the bootstrap shell runs each setup step through handle.process.exec. That method calls executeCommand without a timeout. The previous persistent shell allowed each command up to 30 minutes. The Daytona process docs state a 10-second default when timeout is omitted. If that default applies to the pinned @daytona/sdk^0.192.0 and the deployed server, setup steps longer than 10 seconds, such as npm install, can be killed and fail bootstrap.
Source: Daytona process code execution docs. The @daytona/sdk range and the deployed server determine whether the documented default applies.

Preserve exports across Daytona setup steps.
Daytona’s default executeCommand shell is zsh. Its export -p output can use zsh-specific typeset declarations, which parseExports ignores. The exec-backed bootstrap then does not pass FOO to the next command, so serial setup such as export FOO=bar followed by test "$FOO" = bar can fail. Preserve exported values across exec calls, or keep a persistent shell for setup.

Add regression coverage for prompt-file delivery and completion.
The Daytona assertion checks only writableStdin. Existing unit tests cover false-capability branch selection, but they do not verify that an adapter writes the prompt file and that the command completes.
The standard E2E matrix has no Daytona provider. Use the repository’s appropriate sandbox conformance or gated integration test surface instead of adding Daytona to the aimock provider matrix.
