A stream reconnect can now ride out a server restart. Reconnect waits grow after each failed try, a time budget can replace the try limit, and a reconnect that gets 408, 429, 502, 503, or 504 tries again instead of failing at once.

🎯 Changes

  • New ReconnectOptions: initialDelayMs (default 250), maxDelayMs (default 5000), and budgetMs. The wait doubles after each reconnect that delivers nothing. Jitter picks a wait between half and the full value.
  • With a budget and no maxAttempts, there is no try limit, only the budget.
  • A reconnect that gets 408, 429, 502, 503, or 504 tries again on fetch, XHR, and fetchJson polls. Retry-After sets the wait, capped at maxDelayMs.
  • delayMs still works as the old name of initialDelayMs, and is marked @deprecated.
  • Behavior change with the defaults: still a 250 ms first wait and 5 tries. A run that keeps failing now gives up after about 7.75 s, not 1.25 s, because the later waits grow.
  • With initialDelayMs: 0, the wait stays 0 on every try. Before, try 1025 computed 0 * 2 ** 1024, which is NaN, and a NaN wait never reached budgetMs.
  • Docs: docs/resumable-streams/advanced.md, docs/resumable-streams/websockets.md. Changeset: client-reconnect-backoff.

This came from an app that builds on TanStack AI (item A19 on its findings list). Out of scope here: reconnect on online or visibilitychange, and a 'reconnecting' status.

✅ Checklist

  • I have followed the steps in the Contributing guide.
  • I have tested code changes locally with pnpm run test:pr, or these tests do not apply to this pull request.
  • I fully understand the code in this pull request, including any code generated with AI assistance.
  • Docs: I updated docs/ for this change, or this change is not user-facing.
  • Changeset: I added a changeset (pnpm changeset), or this PR does not change a published package.

🚀 Release Impact

  • This change affects published code, and I have generated a changeset.
  • This change is docs/CI/dev-only (no release).

Testing

Commands run. The new tests/connection-adapters-reconnect-backoff.test.ts (fake timers) and the changed resumable, transports, XHR, and fetch-json tests pass (81 tests), plus 30 chat-client resume tests. One old test expected a 503 to fail at once. It now uses a 401. The error path now reads Retry-After, so three HTTP error tests in connection-adapters.test.ts give their mock an empty Headers. The full @tanstack/ai-client suite passes (68 files, 1013 tests), and the new 0-delay budget test fails on the old code. test:types and test:oxlint pass for @tanstack/ai-client. Not run locally: pnpm test:pr and E2E. CI runs them.

Manual test.

  1. Run pnpm --dir packages/ai-client exec vitest run tests/connection-adapters-reconnect-backoff.test.ts.
  2. In an app, use fetchServerSentEvents('/api/chat', { reconnect: { budgetMs: 120_000 } }) and restart the server during a stream. The stream continues after the server is back.

How this PR makes testing easy. The new backoff test file.

Risk / rollback

Medium-low. With the defaults, a run that keeps failing takes longer to give up (about 7.75 s, not 1.25 s), and temporary statuses now try again. To undo, revert the PR.

Public API change

Before

fetchServerSentEvents('/api/chat', { reconnect: { maxAttempts: 5, delayMs: 250 } })

After

fetchServerSentEvents('/api/chat', {
  reconnect: { initialDelayMs: 250, maxDelayMs: 5_000, budgetMs: 120_000 },
})

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features
    • Reconnecting streams now use exponential backoff with jitter and configurable minimum and maximum delays.
    • Temporary server errors (408, 429, 502, 503, and 504) can be retried; Retry-After responses are respected.
    • Optional time budgets let reconnect attempts continue until the budget expires, with progress resetting the timer.
  • Documentation
    • Updated resumable-stream and WebSocket guidance with the new reconnection options and server-restart example.

ReconnectOptions gets initialDelayMs, maxDelayMs, and budgetMs. The reconnect wait doubles with jitter, and a reconnect answered 408, 429, 502, 503, or 504 is retried, with Retry-After as the wait. The first wait stays 250 ms and the limit stays 5 attempts unless a budget is set.

📝 Walkthrough

The client now supports exponential reconnect backoff with jitter, optional time budgets, and retries for selected temporary HTTP responses. The documentation and tests cover the reconnect options, retry behavior, and failure cases.

Changes: Reconnect Policy and HTTP Retry Flow

Layer / File(s) Summary
Reconnect policy and limits
packages/ai-client/src/connection-adapters.ts, packages/ai-client/tests/connection-adapters-reconnect-backoff.test.ts, docs/resumable-streams/advanced.md, docs/resumable-streams/websockets.md, .changeset/client-reconnect-backoff.md
Reconnect options support initial and maximum delays, jitter, and an optional time budget. The tracker accepts Retry-After, validates configured values, and enforces attempt or time limits. Tests and documentation describe these settings and behaviors.
Temporary HTTP retry integration
packages/ai-client/src/connection-adapters.ts, packages/ai-client/tests/connection-adapters-reconnect-backoff.test.ts, packages/ai-client/tests/connection-adapters-resumable-transports.test.ts, packages/ai-client/tests/connection-adapters-resumable.test.ts, packages/ai-client/tests/connection-adapters-xhr.test.ts, packages/ai-client/tests/fetch-json.test.ts
Fetch and XHR errors include response status and parsed Retry-After. Durable streams and JSON follow-up GETs retry HTTP 408, 429, 502, 503, and 504. Tests cover resumed requests, polling retries, and immediate failure for HTTP 401.

Setting a zero initial reconnect delay together with a reconnect time budget can let retries continue past the budget in a narrow edge case. Handle the zero delay before exponentiation. Default and typical configurations are not affected.

- With initialDelayMs 0, try 1025 computed 0 * 2 ** 1024, which is NaN.
A NaN delay never reached budgetMs, so the retries did not stop.
A 0 start delay now stays 0. A new test runs 1100 tries, then checks
that the budget stops the next one.
- Three HTTP error tests mocked a response with no headers. The error
path now reads Retry-After, so the mocks get an empty Headers.
