The provider packages export 24 model ids that the providers have retired. TypeScript accepts them, and the call fails at runtime. This PR removes them, plus the code paths, docs, skills, examples, and tests that only served them.

🎯 Changes

Removed ids (each fails on the provider's model API or is listed as shut down, and is absent from modelschemas and OpenRouter):

  • Groq (7): llama-3.3-70b-versatile, llama-3.1-8b-instant, meta-llama/llama-4-maverick-17b-128e-instruct, meta-llama/llama-4-scout-17b-16e-instruct, meta-llama/llama-guard-4-12b, moonshotai/kimi-k2-instruct-0905, qwen/qwen3-32b. All shut down Mar to Aug 2026 per Groq's deprecations page.
  • Mistral (3): pixtral-large-latest, pixtral-12b-2409, open-mistral-nemo. Retired per Mistral's models page.
  • OpenAI (9): chatgpt-4o-latest, codex-mini-latest, gpt-4o-audio, gpt-4o-mini-audio, gpt-4o-audio-preview, gpt-5.6 (bare id; the live ones are -sol, -luna, -terra), dall-e-2, dall-e-3, computer-use-preview.
  • Anthropic (2): claude-opus-4-1, claude-opus-5-fast.
  • Gemini (3): imagen-4.0-generate-001, imagen-4.0-ultra-generate-001, imagen-4.0-fast-generate-001.

Replacements that keep a capability:

  • Groq: adds qwen/qwen3.8-27b, Groq's named successor. Without it Groq has no vision model.
  • OpenAI: gpt-4o-mini-tts joins OPENAI_TTS_MODELS. It is the live TTS model that takes instructions.

Code that only served removed models is deleted:

  • @tanstack/ai-gemini: the Imagen path (generateImages, Imagen size and count validation).
  • @tanstack/ai-openai: dall-e option types and validation.
  • @tanstack/openai-base: the computer-use-preview tool branch.
  • Anthropic: the forced-tool structured-output e2e route. No registered Claude model takes that path now.

Kept on purpose, because nothing proves they are dead:

  • Vertex-only partner ids (mistral-medium-3, mistral-small-2503, codestral-2, grok-4.1-fast-*).
  • OpenAI ids that 404 on our key but OpenRouter still lists (the -pro variants, gpt-5.4-image-2, gpt-chat-latest).

Docs, skills, examples, and the playground template use live ids now. docs/config.json dates are unchanged, because these are factual fixes.

✅ Checklist

  • I have followed the steps in the Contributing guide.
  • I have tested code changes locally with pnpm run test:pr, or these tests do not apply to this pull request.
  • I fully understand the code in this pull request, including any code generated with AI assistance.
  • Docs: I updated docs/ for this change, or this change is not user-facing.
  • Changeset: I added a changeset (pnpm changeset), or this PR does not change a published package.

🚀 Release Impact

  • This change affects published code, and I have generated a changeset.
  • This change is docs/CI/dev-only (no release).

Root cause

Issue. A user can pick a model id from our exported unions, for example groqText('llama-3.3-70b-versatile') or openaiImage('dall-e-3'). It type-checks, then the provider rejects the call.
Cause. The hand-written model-meta.ts lists in each provider package are never checked against the providers, so retired ids stay in the unions.
Fix. Remove every id that the provider no longer serves, plus the code paths only those ids reached.

Possible alternatives

Testing

Commands run (on 21f2b9ec3, merged with main 3e84606af).

  1. pnpm nx affected -t test:types --base=3e84606af: 105 projects passed.
  2. pnpm nx affected -t test:oxlint --base=origin/main: 74 projects passed.
  3. vitest run in each changed package: ai-openai 429, openai-base 399, ai-anthropic 313, ai-gemini 400, ai-groq 49, ai-mistral 112, all passed.
  4. pnpm test:docs, pnpm test:knip, and kiira check on the changed docs (141 snippets): passed.
  5. Not run: the Playwright e2e suite. CI runs it. Changed specs: openai-computer-use-wire, structured-output-length-wire, copilot-wire, chat-completions-incomplete-stream, gemini-image-ga-models, the Groq chat and summarize specs. Deleted: anthropic-structured-usage.

Repro. An agent-written check that asks each provider whether every exported model id exists. OpenAI, Anthropic, and Gemini use GET /models/{id}. Groq and Mistral use the modelschemas catalog.

On clean main (3e84606af):

ai-openai DEAD: computer-use-preview, gpt-4o-mini-audio, gpt-4o-audio, chatgpt-4o-latest, codex-mini-latest, dall-e-2, dall-e-3, gpt-5.6, gpt-4o-audio-preview
ai-anthropic DEAD: claude-opus-4-1, claude-opus-5-fast
ai-gemini DEAD: imagen-4.0-generate-001, imagen-4.0-ultra-generate-001, imagen-4.0-fast-generate-001
ai-groq DEAD: llama-3.3-70b-versatile, meta-llama/llama-4-maverick-17b-128e-instruct, meta-llama/llama-4-scout-17b-16e-instruct, meta-llama/llama-guard-4-12b, llama-3.1-8b-instant, moonshotai/kimi-k2-instruct-0905, qwen/qwen3-32b
ai-mistral DEAD: pixtral-large-latest, pixtral-12b-2409, open-mistral-nemo
FAIL: 24 exported model ids do not exist
exit 1

On this branch (21f2b9ec3):

ai-openai ok
ai-anthropic ok
ai-gemini ok
ai-groq ok
ai-mistral ok
PASS: every exported model id exists
exit 0

Manual test.

  1. On main, write groqText('llama-3.3-70b-versatile'). It type-checks.
  2. On this branch, the same line is a type error.
  3. Call groqText('openai/gpt-oss-120b') with a key. The call succeeds.

How this PR makes testing easy. The type checks in each package now fail on any removed id. The e2e specs listed above cover the changed wire paths.

Beyond the minimum fix. Two items go past the smallest change, the bugfix-pr keep gate: the two replacement models and the dead-code removal listed above. They are here on purpose, so the packages do not keep code that no model can reach.

Public API change

Before

import { geminiImage, type GeminiImageProviderOptions } from '@tanstack/ai-gemini'
const adapter = geminiImage('imagen-4.0-generate-001')

After

import { geminiImage, type GeminiNativeImageProviderOptions } from '@tanstack/ai-gemini'
const adapter = geminiImage('gemini-nano-banana-2.1')

Also removed: GeminiAnyImageProviderOptions, GeminiAspectRatio, PersonGeneration, SafetyFilterLevel, ImagePromptLanguage, GEMINI_NATIVE_IMAGE_MODELS, isGeminiNativeImageModel, OpenAIComputerToolName, the dall-e option types, and the model argument of resolveComputerUseTool. The changeset is a patch, because each removed id or type only worked with a model that already fails.

Risk / rollback

  • A user on a removed id gets a type error on upgrade, where before they got a runtime error.
  • To roll back, revert this PR.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features

    • Added Groq support for Qwen 3.8 27B, including reasoning and vision capabilities.
    • Updated chat examples and selectors to feature newer OpenAI and Groq models.
    • Gemini image generation now uses the Interactions API for supported Gemini image models.
  • Updates

    • Refreshed provider model catalogs and guidance to reflect current model availability.
    • OpenAI speech examples and selectors now use GPT-4o mini TTS.
    • Computer-use examples now use the standard computer tool format.
  • Compatibility

    • Retired models and legacy image-generation options, including DALL·E and Imagen, are no longer listed as supported.

Each removed id 404s on the provider's model API (or is listed as shut
down on its deprecations page) and is absent from modelschemas and
OpenRouter. Code paths, types, docs, skills, examples, and tests that
only served those models go with them.

✅ Coverage held across 70 compared package(s).

Each package is measured twice in this job — on this PR and on its merge-base with main — and compared. A metric fails only when it is at or above 60% on the merge-base and under 60% on this PR. Other drops are listed but do not fail. Packages your PR doesn't affect are not measured and not listed.

Use major changesets for the breaking provider APIs.

The checked-in Changesets guidance classifies breaking published API changes as major, not minor. Update the affected provider packages. Keep @tanstack/ai as patch; its inspected changes do not establish a breaking published export.

Remove model ids that providers have retired. Each one now fails on the provider's API, so the types no longer accept it.

Name the Chat Completions adapter for gpt-audio.

The revised row puts gpt-audio under openaiText, which calls the Responses API. The catalog lists gpt-audio for Chat Completions only. A reader who selects the documented adapter cannot use this audio model. Name openaiChatCompletions for the audio case instead. OpenAI also identifies gpt-audio as a Chat Completions audio model. Remove the ineffective sampling option from this example.

The model change to gpt-6.1-sol leaves temperature: 0.7 in the example. openaiText drops temperature for GPT-6 models unless reasoning effort is none, so this call does not apply the illustrated setting. Use a model that accepts temperature, or show an option that gpt-6.1-sol receives.

Restore legacy computer-call metadata during replay.

Conversations saved by the former Responses adapter can contain openaiUserTool: 'computer_use_preview'. The current replay path passes that metadata to userToolRequestItem, which recognizes only 'computer'. The request therefore falls through to a generic function_call, and the corresponding result falls through to generic function_call_output instead of computer_call and computer_call_output.

Normalize the legacy metadata only on the replay path before calling the user-tool helpers. Do not add computer_use_preview back to the new-call configuration or public tool-name type.
