fix(ai-anthropic): keep the input usage when a stream fails after message_start - #1793
Conversation
…sage_start - Put the message_start usage on the RUN_ERROR that processAnthropicStream yields when the stream throws - Skip it when the closing message_delta already reported usage, so a call never reports it twice - Keep the output count that message_start reported - Say in the messageStartUsage comment that a failed stream reads it too - Cover a throw after message_start, before message_start and after the closing message_delta in usage-extraction.test.ts - Cover an Anthropic SSE error event through the real SDK in stream-failure-usage-wire.test.ts - Add a patch changeset for @tanstack/ai-anthropic Fixes TanStack#1735
…usage - Extend the usage on RUN_ERROR paragraph of the Anthropic adapter page to a stream that fails after it starts - Say that the input counts are complete and the output count can be lower than the real one - Refresh the page's updatedAt in docs/config.json
…ssage_start - Add an aimock fixture that drops the connection after message_start, the text block start and one text delta - Add the /api/anthropic-stream-failure-usage route, which returns the usage of the RUN_ERROR that chat() yields - Assert that the RUN_ERROR carries the message_start input and output counts - Regenerate routeTree.gen.ts with the dev server

🎯 Functional Correctness | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick win
Limit the RUN_ERROR usage claim to failures before the closing delta.
If the stream fails after a terminal message_delta, RUN_FINISHED already carries usage. The later RUN_ERROR has no usage. Line 183 says that any stream failure after the stream starts puts message_start usage on RUN_ERROR. Qualify the sentence so readers do not look for usage on the wrong chunk.

Anthropic reports a call's input side (
input_tokens,cache_creation_input_tokens,cache_read_input_tokens) in the stream's first event,message_start.processAnthropicStreamkept it inmessageStartUsageand read it only when the closingmessage_deltaarrived. When the stream threw between those two events, a connection reset or an SSEerrorevent such asoverloaded_error(which the SDK throws as anAPIError), the catch yieldedRUN_ERRORwith nousage. The input tokens Anthropic had already billed were lost. This PR spreadsbuildAnthropicUsage(messageStartUsage)onto thatRUN_ERROR, unless a terminal chunk already reported usage. Source diff intext.tsis +6/-1.🎯 Changes
processAnthropicStreambuildsusagefrommessageStartUsageand spreads it onto theRUN_ERROR. It skips that whenhasEmittedRunFinishedis set, so a throw between the closingmessage_deltaandmessage_stopdoes not report the usage a second time. Beforemessage_start,buildAnthropicUsage(undefined)returnsundefinedand nothing is added. ThemessageStartUsagecomment now says a failed stream reads it too.it.eachinpackages/ai-anthropic/tests/usage-extraction.test.tswith three rows, all throwingECONNRESET. The "after message_start" row (input 18, cache write 7, cache read 40) fails on main. The "before message_start" and "after the closing message_delta" rows pass on main by design. They pin the guard, and the third row fails if the guard is removed.packages/ai-anthropic/tests/stream-failure-usage-wire.test.ts. Real SDK with an injectedfetchwhose SSE body ismessage_start, a block start, one delta, thenevent: errorwithoverloaded_error. Proves the SDK'sAPIErrorpath reaches the same catch. Happy to send both separately. This follows #1609, which put
usageon themax_tokensRUN_ERRORand decided there thatonUsagedoes not fire forRUN_ERROR. That contract is unchanged. The issue is the sibling of #1597: that case has a closingmessage_deltato build from, this one has onlymessage_start.✅ Checklist

Root cause
Issue. An Anthropic stream that throws after
message_startand before the closingmessage_deltaends in aRUN_ERRORwith nousage. The input tokens, which Anthropic has already counted and bills, never reach the consumer. With a cached system prompt that is most of the call's price.Cause. In
packages/ai-anthropic/src/adapters/text.ts,messageStartUsagewas only read inside themessage_deltabranch, as a fallback for a closing delta that leaves input counts out. The catch ofprocessAnthropicStreambuilt theRUN_ERRORfrom the error alone.Fix. The catch calls
buildAnthropicUsage(messageStartUsage)and spreads the result onto theRUN_ERROR, guarded byhasEmittedRunFinished. That gives the full input side (promptTokenswith cache details) plus the output countmessage_startcarried. The guard keeps a call from reporting usage twice. Everything else in the catch is unchanged.Possible alternatives
completionTokenson thisRUN_ERROR.message_startreportsoutput_tokens, usually 1. This PR keeps it because it is what the provider sent, it matches the SDK's ownMessageStreamsnapshot for a stream cut beforemessage_delta, and it needs no new path inbuildAnthropicUsage. It is a lower bound and the docs say so. If you prefer 0, it is a one-line change and I am happy to make it.message_startusage as its own event (option 2 in the issue). It would also cover the process dying mid-stream, but it is a new event shape that the other adapters would want too. That is a core decision and larger than a patch.onUsageforRUN_ERROR. Rejected in fix(ai-anthropic): report token usage when a stream stops at max_tokens #1609 because it changes core behavior and needs a double counting check. Not reopened here.Testing

Fixes #1735
Risk / rollback
Low. The success path and the
max_tokenspath are unchanged. The one new behavior is on a mid-stream failure, which is the fix:RUN_ERROR.usagegoes fromundefinedto aTokenUsagefor a stream that throws aftermessage_start. Same kind of patch change as fix(ai-anthropic): report token usage when a stream stops at max_tokens #1609. Code that sumsusagefrom every terminal chunk now counts input it used to miss.completionTokenson that chunk is themessage_startoutput count, a lower bound. The docs and the changeset say so.onUsage, OTel and devtools read usage only fromRUN_FINISHED, so none of them change. When anonModelErrormiddleware retries the failed call, theRUN_ERRORis dropped from the stream as today, so the failed attempt's usage is visible to that hook only and cannot double count.latencythe socket closes before the headers reach the client, the SDK throws atmakeRequestand the stream catch never runs. If aimock changes its flush behavior the spec can go flaky.docs/adapters/anthropic.mdand theupdatedAtline indocs/config.jsonmay conflict trivially with another open PR.Rollback: revert the PR.
