🎯 Changes

  • ChatStreamSummarizeAdapter skips the default temperature: 0.3 when the wrapped text adapter sets supportsSamplingTemperature: false.
  • Anthropic sets that flag from ANTHROPIC_MODELS_WITHOUT_SAMPLING (incl. Sonnet/Opus 5.5, Haiku 5.5, Fable, Opus 4.7/4.8, Sonnet 5).
  • Anthropic wire layer strips temperature / top_p / top_k for those models even if cast in.
  • Corrects claude-opus-5-5 provider options to AnthropicMaxTokensOptions (no sampling).
  • Docs + changeset. Fixes summarize() sends temperature 0.3 to models that reject sampling parameters (e.g. claude-sonnet-5-5) #1703.

✅ Checklist

  • I have followed the steps in the Contributing guide.
  • I have tested code changes locally with pnpm run test:pr, or these tests do not apply to this pull request.
  • I fully unders the code in this pull request, including any code generated with AI assistance.
  • Docs: I updated docs/ for this change, or this change is not user-facing.
  • Changeset: I added a changeset (pnpm changeset), or this PR does not change a published package.

🚀 Release Impact

  • This change affects published code, and I have generated a changeset.
  • This change is docs/CI/dev-only (no release).

Test plan

  • pnpm test:pr green locally
  • Unit: summarize skips temp when flag is false; Anthropic strip + type-drift tests

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Bug Fixes
    • Anthropic requests for models that don’t support sampling no longer include sampling parameters, avoiding rejected requests. A warning is issued when unsupported sampling parameters are supplied.
    • Summarization omits its default temperature for models that don’t support sampling, while continuing to pass the requested maximum length. Models that support sampling retain the existing default behavior.
  • Documentation
    • Clarified sampling parameter support for Anthropic models, including Opus 5.5, which rejects non-default sampling parameters.

summarize() was injecting temperature: 0.3 for every non-Ollama adapter,
which 400s on Anthropic models that reject non-default sampling (e.g.
claude-sonnet-5-5). Opt out via supportsSamplingTemperature, strip
sampling keys on the Anthropic wire, and align opus-5-5 meta.

📝 Walkthrough

Anthropic model metadata and request mapping identify models that do not support sampling parameters. The Anthropic adapter reports its sampling-temperature capability and omits unsupported parameters from requests. Summarization uses that capability to skip its default temperature when needed.

Changes: Anthropic sampling support

Layer / File(s) Summary
Model sampling support
packages/ai-anthropic/src/model-meta.ts, packages/ai-anthropic/src/index.ts, packages/ai-anthropic/tests/model-meta.test.ts, packages/ai-anthropic/tests/chat-per-model-type-safety.test.ts, docs/adapters/anthropic.md
The model metadata lists models without sampling support and exposes a predicate for checking model support. Opus 5.5 provider options exclude sampling fields. Tests and documentation cover the model rules and types.
Anthropic request mapping
packages/ai-anthropic/src/adapters/text.ts, packages/ai-anthropic/tests/anthropic-adapter.test.ts
The adapter reports whether the model supports sampling temperature. It omits unsupported sampling keys from provider options and warns when those keys are supplied.

Summarization skips its default temperature when the adapter reports no sampling-temperature support. Tests check the request temperature and retained max_tokens option.

The description follows the required template, explains the changes, records the checklist, documents release impact, and includes a test plan. The checklist contains a minor typo in “I fully unders the code,” but the description is otherwise complete.

Full details: Linked Issues check

Explanation

Issue #1703 requires summarize() to omit its default temperature: 0.3 for models that reject sampling parameters, or provide a typed opt-out. ChatStreamSummarizeAdapter now checks supportsSamplingTemperature. Anthropic marks the no-sampling models, strips temperature, top_p, and top_k, and corrects claude-opus-5-5 provider options. Tests cover summarize behavior, Anthropic wire filtering, model metadata, and type safety.

Full details: Out of Scope Changes check

Explanation

The changes remain within issue #1703. The capability flag, Anthropic model metadata, wire-layer filtering, claude-opus-5-5 type correction, documentation, changeset, and tests directly support the sampling-parameter fix. No unrelated change is demonstrated.

Classify claude-opus-5 as a no-sampling model.

claude-opus-5 is registered but absent from this list. Anthropic states that it rejects non-default sampling values. As a result, anthropicSummarize('claude-opus-5') still adds temperature: 0.3, and the request can return a 400. Add its ID to this list and remove sampling fields from its provider-options types so the runtime and type contracts agree. (platform.claude.com)

Findings

  • [nit] docs/adapters/anthropic.md:354 The summarize temperature skip is documented only on the Sonnet/Opus 5.5 bullet, with “other no-sampling ids above.” Haiku 5.5 is a no-sampling model listed after this bullet, so readers can miss that summarize omits temperature there too.
  • [nit] packages/ai-anthropic/tests/model-meta.test.ts:198 Indexing AnthropicChatModelProviderOptionsByName with the WithoutSampling union, then asserting not.toHaveProperty('temperature'), does not fail if a sampling model is wrongly added to ANTHROPIC_MODELS_WITHOUT_SAMPLING. keyof of a union is the intersection of keys, so temperature disappears as soon as any member lacks it.

Check sampling keys for each model type.

Options is a union. A negative toHaveProperty assertion can pass when a sampling key exists on only one union member, because that key is not common to the union. The current declarations are correct; this is a test coverage gap. Check each AnthropicChatModelProviderOptionsByName[K] before combining the results.

Suggested type assertion

- expectTypeOf<Options>().toHaveProperty('max_tokens')

Use a registered sampling model in this test.

createAdapter accepts only 'claude-sonnet-4-5', so the 'claude-opus-4-1' argument fails TypeScript checking. Use 'claude-sonnet-4-5' here. This keeps the capability assertion and allows the affected package’s test:types target to pass.
