You can now set Workers AI request headers in binding mode. createCloudflareText(model, { binding: env.AI, defaultHeaders: { 'x-session-affinity': 'ses_...' } }) sends them as the extraHeaders run option, so prompt caching works from a Worker. Before this PR, the binding path dropped every header, and REST was the only way to send one.

🎯 Changes

  • CloudflareBindingConfig gets an optional defaultHeaders: Record<string, string>. It has the same name as the REST text config field, so one config shape works in both modes.
  • createBindingFetch (text and summarize) and runModel (embedding, image, TTS, transcription) pass it to binding.run as extraHeaders, next to gateway. The field is on the shared binding config, so every binding adapter uses it. No adapter ignores it.
  • The OpenAI SDK's own headers (authorization, user-agent, x-stainless-*) are still not forwarded. Only the configured headers reach the binding.
  • Docs: a short "Reuse the prompt cache" section in docs/adapters/cloudflare.md, and a new updatedAt in docs/config.json.
  • Changeset: @tanstack/ai-cloudflare minor (new opt-in option).

Out of scope: per-request chat({ request: { headers } }) in binding mode. Those headers arrive mixed with the SDK headers on init.headers, and to forward them the adapter would need a filter for the SDK headers. Worker code usually builds the adapter per request, so defaultHeaders covers the session-affinity case.

✅ Checklist

  • I have followed the steps in the Contributing guide.
  • I have tested code changes locally with pnpm run test:pr, or these tests do not apply to this pull request.
  • I fully understand the code in this pull request, including any code generated with AI assistance.
  • Docs: I updated docs/ for this change, or this change is not user-facing.
  • Changeset: I added a changeset (pnpm changeset), or this PR does not change a published package.

🚀 Release Impact

  • This change affects published code, and I have generated a changeset.
  • This change is docs/CI/dev-only (no release).

Testing

Commands run

  • pnpm test:pr: passed (sherif, knip, docs, kiira, oxlint, lib, types, build, including @tanstack/ai-e2e:test:types).
  • pnpm exec playwright test tests/cloudflare-binding-headers-wire.spec.ts in testing/e2e: passed. With the src change reverted it fails (x-session-affinity is undefined).
  • The two new unit tests fail without the src change and pass with it.
  • Not run: the full E2E matrix. The new spec only uses Playwright's request fixture.

Manual test

  1. In a Worker with an ai binding, build createCloudflareText('@cf/zai-org/glm-5.3-flash', { binding: env.AI, defaultHeaders: { 'x-session-affinity': 'ses_test' } }).
  2. Send two chat turns of one conversation.
  3. On the second turn, usage.prompt_tokens_details.cached_tokens in the raw response is more than 0.

How this PR makes testing easy

  • Unit tests in packages/ai-cloudflare/tests/cloudflare-adapter.test.ts: a mock binding shows that the text path sends { returnRawResponse, gateway, extraHeaders } with no other keys, and that the embedding path sends extraHeaders.
  • E2E wire spec testing/e2e/tests/cloudflare-binding-headers-wire.spec.ts: a stand-in env.AI posts to aimock with extraHeaders, the way the real binding does. The spec reads the aimock journal. It checks that x-session-affinity arrives and that there is no authorization or x-stainless-* header. aimock cannot run the real Workers AI binding, so the stand-in replaces only run.

Risk / rollback

Low. The option is opt-in, and when it is not set, binding.run gets the same options as before. To undo, revert this PR.

Public API change

Before

// No way to send x-session-affinity through the binding.
createCloudflareText('@cf/zai-org/glm-5.3-flash', { binding: env.AI })

After

createCloudflareText('@cf/zai-org/glm-5.3-flash', {
  binding: env.AI,
  defaultHeaders: { 'x-session-affinity': `ses_${conversationId}` },
})

🤖 Generated with Claude Code

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features
    • Cloudflare AI bindings can now send custom default headers with each request, including session-affinity headers that can help reuse prompt caches across turns.
  • Documentation
    • Added guidance on configuring session affinity for prompt-cache reuse with Cloudflare bindings and REST configurations.

Binding mode dropped every request header, so there was no way to set
x-session-affinity for Workers AI prompt caching. The binding config now
takes defaultHeaders and forwards them as the extraHeaders run option,
next to gateway. The OpenAI SDK's own headers are still not forwarded.

📝 Walkthrough

The Cloudflare binding configuration now accepts defaultHeaders and forwards them as Workers AI extraHeaders. Documentation, adapter tests, and an end-to-end test describe and verify the behavior.

Changes: Cloudflare binding headers

The binding config accepts defaultHeaders. The adapter passes the full config to createBindingFetch, which forwards the headers as extraHeaders. runModel forwards configured gateway and header options. Tests cover text and embedding binding calls. Documentation and a changeset describe the option.
Verify binding headers end to end
testing/e2e/src/routes/api.cloudflare-binding-headers-wire.ts, testing/e2e/src/routeTree.gen.ts, testing/e2e/fixtures/chat/cloudflare-binding-headers-wire.json, testing/e2e/tests/cloudflare-binding-headers-wire.spec.ts
The test route sends a binding request to LLMOCK with session affinity. The end-to-end test checks the captured affinity header and verifies that authorization and x-stainless-* headers are absent.

Merge Risk: ⚪ Minimal · up to 87ced

Configured headers reach the covered binding runs. No actionable merge-blocking risk remains after normal checks.

Security architecture risk: 🔵 Low · up to 2bee5

The option expands the headers application code can send while preserving separation from automatically generated client headers. No concrete vulnerability was established. Production configuration sources and the provider’s treatment of sensitive headers remain unverified.

Retained concerns
No architecture-level concerns identified.

Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • inferred — The authority expansion is bounded to callers configuring an existing Workers AI binding and to calls using the shared forwarding utilities. The examined code does not establish additional binding credentials, destinations, tenant access, or environment-wide privileges.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • observed — Per-request and automatically generated client headers do not enter the examined binding-fetch call. Binding authentication remains attached to the supplied binding, while configured headers deliberately cross the downstream request boundary.
  • observed — The wire-test assertions check session-affinity forwarding and the absence of authorization and x-stainless-* headers. Because the endpoint substitutes a mock binding, this coverage does not verify the live provider’s handling of sensitive header names or cache isolation.

Hardening Proposals

  • proposed — Document that defaultHeaders grants downstream header-setting authority. Integrations should select application-approved values rather than copying inbound request headers wholesale; an application-specific allowlist can preserve that boundary where configuration derives from user input.

🎯 Functional Correctness | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick win

Remove the unsupported REST configuration claim.

CloudflareRestConfig does not define defaultHeaders, and native REST adapters do not consume it. A typed REST configuration can produce a TypeScript excess-property error. If the type check is bypassed, the field is ignored. Remove the second sentence.

Suggested fix
- The binding sends `defaultHeaders` as the `extraHeaders` run option, next to `gateway`. The REST config takes the same `defaultHeaders` field.
