📖 Tutorial: 20 mpg is NOT 20 × anything — the reciprocal fuel trap | 教程:油耗单位为什么不能线性换算 #6

Description

@TYEclipse

The trap

"Convert 20 mpg to L/100km" — an agent that multiplies by a factor will answer something like 4700 L/100km. The real answer is 11.76 L/100km, because fuel economy is reciprocal: mpg measures distance per volume, L/100km measures volume per distance.

L/100km = 235.214583 ÷ mpg (US) — a higher mpg means a lower L/100km.

When agents actually hit this

  • Reading a rental-car or review page that quotes mpg while the report needs L/100km
  • Comparing US vs UK mpg — they differ! (imperial gallon = 4.54609 L vs US = 3.785411784 L)
  • Converting km/L (common in Asia/Europe) to mpg for an English-language audience

The 3-step agent runbook

  1. Check the unit pair is same-category — convert_unit rejects cross-category pairs with a clear error, so let it fail loudly instead of guessing.
  2. Name the gallon — mpg = US, mpg(uk) = imperial. The 282.48 vs 235.21 divisor difference is ~20%.
  3. Trust the formula string — dsh-units returns the applied formula (e.g. 235.214583 ÷ x → x) so you can quote why the answer is 11.76, not just what it is.

Quick sanity anchors to remember: 20 US mpg ≈ 11.8 L/100km, 8.5 km/L ≈ 20 US mpg, 1 mpg ≈ 0.425 km/L.

中文摘要:油耗换算是倒数关系(mpg 越大 L/100km 越小),线性乘因子必错;美制与英制加仑系数不同(235.21 vs 282.48);记住三个锚点值即可快速自检。
